Despite the fact that the singing sucks, this song get's my nomination for best rock song of all time. Knopflers singing, which was bad to start with, only got worse over the years. But oh my, those guitar licks are so, so sweet. There may be a few other lead guitarists that have more technical talent (not by much), but none of them can find those magical melodious licks like Knopfler.

Wouldn't want to get into a pissing contest about who the best guitarist is. And there are a lot of good ones out there. But I know that I like listening to Knopfler licks the best. They are both hot and simultaniously beautiful.

Mark Knopfler, brilliant guitarist and master song writer. I wonder how far he'd get today with Simon Cowell the self appointed gatekeeper of the music industry? not past the first audition i'm guessing, Cowell and Co. couldn't spot talent if it were right under their noses the art of the song smith is completely ignored in his manufactured format. . I wonder how many Knopflers there are out there today that will never get a break.

The sound of this version is just perfect. I cannot discribe how I think the Pensa sounds like the best guitar for this song. It's cries, it screams. Knopfler touches it so minimalistic but also unbelievably detailed... Chris Whitten is a master on the drums; tom-drops, crashes all over. This is Sultans of Swing on it's very best!

Yeah, and it's wonderful how he can change songs, most of the times into the better.

This one and the Alchemy version are my favourites of this song.
