@KaiApollo Springsteen is is 1 of the best and most prolific songwriters america has ever known. My god the man is a national treasure and I don't have a bad thing to say about the man, nor should you. All musicians and/or songwriters who are on columbia records are "employees" whether they're artists and gifted or not, which often times is debatable. Stevie Nicks had a great voice and I personally don't listen to either of these artists, however the first Fleewood Mac, whooo boy!!! The best!
This tune took me out to the stars and then back again to gaze over vast seas at sunset. Huge rolling waves and the gleam of the star known as Sun reflected on the waters and reminded me of who I was and what was my home. The Pinnacle of what mind expansion is.
Funny how Santana used to play with amazing players like John Mclaughlin, Paco de Lucia and Eric Clapton but now he plays with pieces of shit like Chad Kroeger (nickelback), Jennifer Lopez, and Justin Timberlake.
Mclaughlin is the king of the guitar. However, Santana is and always will be a god.
I love McLaughlin's work with MVO; his style really fits with them. However, here his tone seems really clashy, and has a great number of muted notes which disrupt the flow of the piece. Moreover, his overall playing seems a little bit choppy.
Otherwise, this is an excellent tribute to John Coltrane, and frankly I feel it even beats the original.
A little fact that's not that known. John Coltrane performed the song My Favorite Things at almost every gig from 61-67, so it's safe to say he easily performed the song 2,000 times over his career. You know how many times he performed any part of the official suite A Love Supreme? Twice. One time he only played Acknowledgment at a French festival. The second time he performed the whole four part suite at a small church celebration shortly before he died. I think that says more than enough
Everybody I knew was listening to the Grateful Dead, Santana, Allman Bros, etc around 1979. This album had already been out for awhile but I got it in '79 and turned my friends on to it. Many of them are musicians. We couldn't believe we had not heard it before. We soon discovered Return to Forever, Dimeola, Holdsworth, etc. This is early jazz-fusion at it's finest.... the music is VERY spiritual. the Whole transcends the sum of the parts.....Very Gestalt.
is it me or they're using major chords as the motif for acknowledgement. im not sure about the latin drums. in fact im not sure i like this at all...but that's just me...
Brings back memories! Havent heard this since I was in H.S. Friend of mine at the time was really into Santana--I was too--the band that is not JUST Carlos. I remember thinking how pretentious they (He and John) looked on the album cover. Thought they were carrying the whole religious aspect a bit too farI mean really Devadip ?SP. Come on!! Just a phase they were going through I guess. But the music itself was good.
I don't think they can really be compared. Coltrane's was jazz, had comping all over the place, amazing. This is amazing as well but is rock and has extended tribute like guitar solos over the same bass riff just without the comping. I like them both equally
This was about the time when Santana started calling himself "Devadip"...great to hear these 2 legends playing off one another in a blistering, cosmic jam of epic proportions. The only thing missing is Coltrane's fiery sax.
Love, Devotion, Surrender in general is a really good album. Very underrated. I think this is my favorite song on it, though, because it's a cover of my favorite song/album of all time (because "A Love Supreme" is just one long song, right?). Not as good as Trane's version, of course, but who can better it? They also do a fine take on "Naima," though (once again) nobody beats Coltrane at his own game.
Was labert der Labamitor ?? Santana ist immer noch einer der besten Guitareros die hier lebendig übern Globus touren.Man sollte sich mal tokyo hotel ansehen und deren Ansehen......

Carlos Santana is not a good guitar player. Youtube caused him to be knocked off my top 1000 list. He is better than me at guitar but thats not saying much since I am probably in the top trillion list. Who cares about that eh?
I love Santana's playing, and I think he's a good player. And that's it, he's good, nothing really special. He knows how to make a distinguishing lick and put it over congas and sell it extremely well.
ltchwiss john coltrane has been an alien. i think this song is one of the best thing in the life of our simple humans, listen from 4:00 to 5:02, i think it's an orgasm, don't you? we need this, john is difficult, is strange, is art. this is the man, is the pop.good but pop.

What utter garbage. This ugly fretboard masturbation has none of the beauty, color or subtlety of Coltrane's masterpiece. More the really shitty sound track to a really shitty movie. Coltrane's spinning in his grave if he listens to this noise.
I'm so glad you here aren't into the Who's a Better Guitarist (at least on the page I saw). What matters is what we can each bring to the party, and I'd have given anything to have been at this one. I've seen John a couple times and spent many hours listening to both. They take me places...
They do the master (Coltrane) proud on this one. I get all God-Damn emotional listening to this. I don't know if I'd call it Spiritual - 'cause I'm not (not in the "traditional" sense, anyway), but this makes me feel I am. They push each other to Amazing heights. Used to listen to this song over, and over - Amazing. Thanks for sharing MM25 - Great upload!
@syr1811 You feel that way because we as human beings are meant to become spiritual. When you listen to a spiritual song such as this, it cleanses a little of the material dirt off of your soul, giving you that enlightened feeling. But for some reason no one wants to inquire about this, and truly find out why they feel this way. Until you try and understand God and the spirit inside of you, you will always continue to fall back into your mundane material existence. Please try
@Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd Jeez!?! We as human beings aren't "meant" for anything.
I approve of my material existence - this music is part of it.
You should try to appreciate it too, brother - it is the only one we have. No matter what you "believe" any nonexistent sky-daddies have to say on the subject.
Please try to throw off the shackles of ignorance, K?
@syr1811 If you think that we are not meant for anything, then you my friend are the most ignorant of all. Material existence is, in fact, a part of life, but it is not the whole, nor the point of it. I appreciate music very much, in fact I play music, it is what got me closer to God. Please just try to understand God. That is all he asks
@syr1811 "[d]uring the year 1957, I experienced, by the grace of God, a spiritual awakening which was to lead me to a richer, fuller, more productive life. At that time, in gratitude, I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music." In his 1965 album Meditations, Coltrane wrote about uplifting people, "...To inspire them to realize more and more of their capacities for living meaningful lives. Because there certainly is meaning to life."
@Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd Dude - You are certainly not gunna convert me to ignorance. To believe there's a sky-daddy watching out for you is INSANE. It means you are ignorant.
Curious how off the deep end you are. How old do you believe the Earth is?
Did God write the Bible? Was there a world-wide flood? Is Creationism a science?
Just because you had some sort of emotional break-down years ago doesn't mean anything - open your mind & get over it.
@syr1811 You're calling the person who wrote this song insane, I hope you realize that. I'm only trying to help you man. If you would actually think, and stop living like an animal, you'd begin to understand. This world was obviously created by something much greater than we.
@Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd That you think this world was created continues to show how little you understand the real world around us.
That you believe it's obvious, shows your awesome ignorance. Ignorance & rationalization get you through the day.
I truly feel sorry for you, Jimmy. If you want to help someone - help yourself, and try to open your eyes. Try reading a book other than the Xtian story-book. That would be a start.
It was you I was calling insane - read more carefully next time.
@syr1811 A love supreme is a spiritual song about God, written by John Coltrane. You said "To believe there's a sky-daddy watching out for you is INSANE." Therefore, you are calling John Coltrane insane, not to mention ignorant. The quotes I sent you yesterday we're John Coltrane's words, just for reference.
@Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd To believe in a supreme being is ignorant. I'll let one of the great geniuses of the 20th century slide. You? Not so much.
Much of what you say is obvious ignorance to me. You don't agree. Whatever. One of us is correct. Too bad your side of the argument doesn't have a shred of proof or evidence anywhere. From any time. Ever.
We are all animals. Descended from ancient apes. If you could free your mind of religious propaganda, maybe you could see. Or not.
My college radio station, WSBF 88.1 FM, Clemson University, had this track mixed into one of their 12-hour ATC (automatic tape control) 12-inch reels in the 70s for airplay when they station wasn't "live" and I used to love hearing this go by during a late night study session!
And now, as a returning student to Clemson, I have secured my old radio show at WSBF-FM, Monday nights 11 pm - 1 am Eastern Time U.S., and will get to put this track BACK on the air!
I was introduced to this album in my teens and it made a deep and lasting impression on me. There is a feeling above words woven through this music - power, enlightenment, worship - leading one's mind upward to a vanishing point beyond the mortal experience... into a realm of pure light and peace. It is hard to listen to this and not float away in spiritual surrender...
no, I meant the 'work' he is doing now.

I don't think they can really be compared. Coltrane's was jazz, had comping all over the place, amazing. This is amazing as well but is rock and has extended tribute like guitar solos over the same bass riff just without the comping. I like them both equally

This album blew me away when I listened to it as a kid..I didn't understand it, but I knew it was great music. and still is...

He knows how to make a distinguishing lick and put it over congas and sell it extremely well.

its all special if it makes the spirit soar:)....Carlos does that!

ltchwiss john coltrane has been an alien. i think this song is one of the best thing in the life of our simple humans, listen from 4:00 to 5:02, i think it's an orgasm, don't you? we need this, john is difficult, is strange, is art. this is the man, is the pop.good but pop.

What utter garbage. This ugly fretboard masturbation has none of the beauty, color or subtlety of Coltrane's masterpiece. More the really shitty sound track to a really shitty movie. Coltrane's spinning in his grave if he listens to this noise.

I think John would have been flattered, not insulted. He might not have been turned on by the Sri Chimnoy aspect, but he would like the solos.
And he would say, "Miles thing is here. Where's McCoy? God bless you, and thanks, man. Next time, bring me in."

actually one of the best combinations ever!!!!

You're Welcome!!
musicminor25 2 years ago 2
@syr1811 You feel that way because we as human beings are meant to become spiritual. When you listen to a spiritual song such as this, it cleanses a little of the material dirt off of your soul, giving you that enlightened feeling. But for some reason no one wants to inquire about this, and truly find out why they feel this way. Until you try and understand God and the spirit inside of you, you will always continue to fall back into your mundane material existence. Please try
Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd 1 year ago
@Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd Jeez!?! We as human beings aren't "meant" for anything.
I approve of my material existence - this music is part of it.
You should try to appreciate it too, brother - it is the only one we have. No matter what you "believe" any nonexistent sky-daddies have to say on the subject.
Please try to throw off the shackles of ignorance, K?
syr1811 1 year ago
@syr1811 If you think that we are not meant for anything, then you my friend are the most ignorant of all. Material existence is, in fact, a part of life, but it is not the whole, nor the point of it. I appreciate music very much, in fact I play music, it is what got me closer to God. Please just try to understand God. That is all he asks
Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd 1 year ago
@Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd Hmmmmmmmmm - Not sure you really know the meaning of the word ignorant.
Glad you've got it all figured out, just one minor problem - there is no such thing as god. . . . just so ya know.
syr1811 1 year ago
@syr1811 From the one you call the "master"
Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd 1 year ago
@syr1811 "[d]uring the year 1957, I experienced, by the grace of God, a spiritual awakening which was to lead me to a richer, fuller, more productive life. At that time, in gratitude, I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music." In his 1965 album Meditations, Coltrane wrote about uplifting people, "...To inspire them to realize more and more of their capacities for living meaningful lives. Because there certainly is meaning to life."
Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd 1 year ago
@Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd Dude - You are certainly not gunna convert me to ignorance. To believe there's a sky-daddy watching out for you is INSANE. It means you are ignorant.
Curious how off the deep end you are. How old do you believe the Earth is?
Did God write the Bible? Was there a world-wide flood? Is Creationism a science?
Just because you had some sort of emotional break-down years ago doesn't mean anything - open your mind & get over it.
Cheers!
syr1811 1 year ago
@syr1811 You're calling the person who wrote this song insane, I hope you realize that. I'm only trying to help you man. If you would actually think, and stop living like an animal, you'd begin to understand. This world was obviously created by something much greater than we.
Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd 1 year ago
@Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd That you think this world was created continues to show how little you understand the real world around us.
That you believe it's obvious, shows your awesome ignorance. Ignorance & rationalization get you through the day.
I truly feel sorry for you, Jimmy. If you want to help someone - help yourself, and try to open your eyes. Try reading a book other than the Xtian story-book. That would be a start.
It was you I was calling insane - read more carefully next time.
syr1811 1 year ago
@syr1811 A love supreme is a spiritual song about God, written by John Coltrane. You said "To believe there's a sky-daddy watching out for you is INSANE." Therefore, you are calling John Coltrane insane, not to mention ignorant. The quotes I sent you yesterday we're John Coltrane's words, just for reference.
Jimmyyyyyyyyyyd 1 year ago

Sublette217 3 years ago
And now, as a returning student to Clemson, I have secured my old radio show at WSBF-FM, Monday nights 11 pm - 1 am Eastern Time U.S., and will get to put this track BACK on the air!

I was introduced to this album in my teens and it made a deep and lasting impression on me. There is a feeling above words woven through this music - power, enlightenment, worship - leading one's mind upward to a vanishing point beyond the mortal experience... into a realm of pure light and peace. It is hard to listen to this and not float away in spiritual surrender...
