Good Song, great version. I'm old enough to remember the radio version of this, and for a minute I thought you were The Youngbloods. The best question to ask when rating music is "Would I BUY this version?" and the simple answer is YES. I think you guys are great. But then I'm old and like REAL music.
Like most covers, it sounds different because a different band is adding its own spin....I like it! actually better than some of the Youngblood's live versions.... A truly great song!
That was a good cover. Don't pay any attention to these musician wannabes. Your not a tribute band so your not going to duplicate the studio version. @stonationable he's a sax player, and was just filling in time on this song. Listen to our other songs to see what he can do. It cracks me up that so many people have such rabid reactions to our little throw-away nod to the past. We just threw this in for fun, and all the critics think we are auditioning for a part in the "we are the '60s" sound track. Come on, take it for what it is -- a few moments of retro fun, and move on.

Okay people...the whole "Forrest Gump" thing is simple. Watch the movie. During a section of the movie THIS song comes on. Kevin watches the movie. Kevin hears the song and remembers what a great song it was. Kevin adds it to the setlist. Kevin casually mentions "off the Forrest Gump soundtrack" more as a silly thing to say than anything else.
And yes, we totally knew we would get negative feedback. Not a surprise at all. What is a bit frustrating about it are the "drive by shooters" who possibly aren't musicians themselves, but feel free to be excessively negative for no good reason. But again, I suppose that goes with the territory. Everyone's a critic.
@BCRSIX: perhaps we got off on the wrong foot here. This is Kevin (and I'm a little more OC than the others...so I get where you're coming from!). I constantly wrestle with exactly how "close" to arrange a cover song. In the case of "Get Together", there is simply NO way I will ever even come close to the original lead vocalists haunting vocal performance...so I don't even try. Could the arrangement be closer to the original? Yes...but we don't have the time nor the inclination right now.
Why does everyone have a problem with this? YES! This song was on the Forrest Gump movie at a very poignant (for me anyway) part of the movie. So it stuck out to me and inspired me to want to perform it. Yes I heard it growing up in the late 60s early 70s, but for some reason, 35 years later it really had an impact. I absolutely adore this song.
@bajabluesband Yeah, it's fine. I mean... I have no problem. I like that movie and how you play this song too... non the less I never noticed it was part of Forest Gump soundtrack. Instead I first heard this tune on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and it is the back ground for a very poignant part of the movie as well. No doubt it is a very powerful song and it means a lot for many people. Saludos desde la Ciudad de Mexico.
OK - you have a valid point - I apologize. I just get a little excited sometimes. I get just as deriding at myself when I play something that is not up to standards. I do not charge to share music. You will NEVER hear me sing - I can clear out a room really fast. Band policy is to keep microphones away from me at all times.
We play this song as a fun flashback, not as a religious experience. To all of you who enjoyed our impromptu jam arrangement of it, thanks for your kind comments. To all the rest who were appointed by god to point out our faults, I cheerfully thumb my nose at you, and ask where I can hear YOU sing. And when I want guitar lessons I'll let you know... do you charge much?
Say, I'm not trying to argue with you, I was just trying to turn you on to something you might like. Most musicians enjoy learning something new every now and then. I can tell you just threw something together wthout ever hearing the tune - it sounds like it. I was just trying to help
@BCRSIX @BCRSIX Really? perhaps you need to work on your delivery a bit, as it sounded more like harsh criticism than a friendly sharing of info. Perhaps if you used fewer words like "disgrace" and "WAY wrong" I might have understood your friendly intent a bit better.
Scott, I would show you the guitar part simply out of the love of music. It is a wonderful part, and you should learn it. It can lead you to many other things. It's a bitch on the left wrist, but it's fun to play. Few people ever get that part right - it's very unique. I believe in personal interpretation of music, but it should be better than the original, not worse. No, I don't have a web site.
@BCRSIX - "better" "worse" who's to say? You? Apparently a lot of people like what we did, and I'm not concerned about those who don't. I did it to have fun, not to impress anybody. At the risk of seeming cavalier, I never gave much thought to this song, as it was not on my radar when I was a kid in the '60s, being more a fan of the british blues stuff. I usually work on my original stuff more than "covers." I have a dozen or so CDs in print, and I don't spend time trying to copy others.

This is probably the most real comment we received. You're darn right on my vocals being a little off key. Since this particular gig I know for a fact we've performed it better (and my vocals have gotten better). Nonetheless, this is the only real video we have for this batch of songs so we used it. Heck...I appreciate "It's ok, but not great". To me that means we're at least in the ballpark!!
You're welcome. Everybody should know they'll never sound exactly like the original. I sing karaoke and for open mic bands and people tell me I sound like whoever I'm singing at the time, but I know I don't really, although I try to just get it right. Rock on and God bless!!
As much as I would truly love to believe this, I am also a realist and there is NO way we sound even close to the magic that the Youngbloods captured with this song. As I've said before elsewhere on this video log, the lead singer of the Youngbloods had a certain haunting quality to his voice that NOBODY (in my opinion) can ever hope to match. We just try to perform the song as best we can (and we don't always succeed at that!). Kevin
@YukonRoxx might not know that all guitars don't sound alike. I build custom guitars and sell them as a business, and most audiences think the guitars are fun to look at. If you know anything about guitars, then you know that a Strat sounds nothing like a RIC, and if you need one for a certain sound, the other won't do it. I try not to have "every song sound the same" so I need a lot of different tones for the songs we do. But thanks for the laugh.
@MrScottWilburn I get that. It's a valid point. That's just the most guitars I have ever seen on stage before. I play in a band where we do everthing from Johnny Cash and Elvis to Zeppelin and Ozzy and all points in between. I usually just use either a Strat or a this weird Yahama with P-90's for the Les Paul sound. I find a lot of it has to do with the distortion sounds. But it does seem like you guys are playing more of the 60's music and that has a lot of variety. :)
@MrScottWilburn Also, wasn't getting down on you man. It's cool you're putting your stuff out there bro. The singer has a good voice he should not worry so much about the stick and just sing. A good song like that speaks for itself and especially with good players. Anyway, hope the day is going well. Cheers from the Yukon :)
@YukonRoxx Thanks. It should be noted that this gig was a spur of the moment thing that happened to get filmed by somebody, and Kevin put it on YouTube for a lark. We hadn't played together in weeks, and the fact that it came off at all is a bit of a miracle. I get a kick out of all the self-appointed critics telling us how we should do what we do. All I can say is "why should I care what you think?" Whenever we include this song in our set, a lot of people dig it, so that's all that matters.
@firstdream -- hey, can you go to our web site and review ALL our songs? You are obviously a rare person of impeccable taste, and I'm sure the world will be better with more of your opinions splattered all over it. I bet yer a great singer too... can I hear some of YOUR stuff?
Now this isn't nice at all sir (or maam?). Cut me some slack on my vocals man...I'm working on my craft every single day and I do NOT use an auto tuner like the pros do. The thing about watching or listening to a performance that has been recorded is that you're not "in the moment" any more and thus it's a LOT easier to be WAY more critical than you have to be. This is indeed a somewhat poorer rendition than we are capable of...but you don't need to be nasty about it. Kevin
@BCRSIX cracks me up. As though we even tried to "do it like the record." I've never even heard the record, and am not into parroting other players. When we do covers, we just do our own thing, and it's different every time we do it. If you don't like it, you don't have to listen. But we do it for fun, not to try and be a carbon copy of some long lost performance. But thanks for the offer to give me guitar lessons. So what's your web site? I'd love to see the work of such a confident critic.
As I mentioned elsewhere, I could indeed arrange it EXACTLY like the original. I have the hardware and the know how and the arranging skills to do it. But what we've found is that firstly, most folks at the venues we play at could really care less about the exactness of the arrangement. If it's close enough to recognize, then they're happy and they're singing along. Secondly, we usually try to "personalize" it a little bit so that we can flex our creativity. Hope that's okay! Kevin
IN fact, both guitar parts are WAY wrong. Use that open A where you leave the b string open - that will help for starters. There's a lot of bass lines on your low strings that must be played, and woork those triads up on the 8th fret. Please study this song before trying to play it.
your 1st guitar part is WAY wrong. Playing it right requires a large stretch, and it can be very painful to the left hand. there are NO open strings. Those notes are e-a-f#-a, then d-g-f#-g. They are played on the 1st 3 strings, and you have to hold those notes out to let them ring. This MUST be played right - it sounds very amatuerish when played like what is on this video. If you need help with the fingerings or picking pattern, I'll be glad to walk you through it.
You can be a little nicer than that I'm thinking! I have been singing since I was 15 and while I absolutely am aware that I am not "lead vocalist" quality (and never will be), at least I'm out there giving it a go. I'd love to hear some of your stuff...do you have it uploaded somewhere? And yes, this performance was pitchy I'll admit, but we've performed it other times and it's been quite a bit better. Sorry that this wasn't good enough for ya. We'll just try harder. Kevin
@bajabluesband I sing and play for a living, and have been for 35yrs. What you guys did here was fine. The guy criticizing..."is an asshole". Nobody, and I mean nobody, sounds great all the time. I've heard "pitchy performances" from killer vocalists; vocalists who could make you piss your pants. "Bette Midler"...is one of the pitchyest around, yet she sells records by the ton. For the guy who criticized? It's performance, not the perfection".
Wow! I never knew we would get such nice comments from you folks! Thank you VERY much. This was one of the staples in our band, especially when I heard it on the movie Forrest Gump. This song just reached out and grabbed me. I wanted to make sure we gave credit to the Youngbloods, but I couldn't remember the year, so I put 1960. I arranged the drums, bass and electric piano and then we played live instruments on top of that. Very enjoyable!!
Dude.... this is cool. I'm a hard person to please... but this did it... Excellent music, excellent performance of a magnificent song. Great vid. I thought it would probably suck... I was wrong
GREAT!! Love this song and you guys did a really nice job with your personal touch to it! I was in jr. high and boy it brings back memories!! (you'all forgot the *listen* part....the jr. high school girls just LOVED the guy who whispered that word). BRAVO Baja Blues!

It's performance, not the perfection".

i like the song, but not the guys singing it in this video. Sorry just my opinion.

Peace out!

I don't know where they got 1960....this was first recorded in 1967 (didn't hit) then re-released in 1969, but no matter. Great song, nice rendition.
