This is incredible incompetence and shows a blatant disregard for safety for an supposed professional raft company. You don't go through rapids like this passively with your crew sitting on the floor of the boat doing nothing. You need the power of the whole crew sitting on the side tubes to steer and power through.
Some of the rafts appear to under-inflated which adds to the problem, etc.
I want to give the guides the benefit of the doubt, after all I wasn't there, but this video does seem to show them as performing very poorly. I can see having the guests crouch on the floor for some drops, but only if the guide is capable of getting the raft safely through the rapid. A good guide should be able to run these with little help from the customers; a lesser guide needs either a more experienced crew or a different river to practice on.
Check out the guide at 1:10 - he just sits there while his raft gets angled going into that hole, and then when he's getting ready to go over the drop, he's kind of "oh, yeah..."
At 1:30 there are a couple of guys hanging at the front of bottom pinned raft, not a good place to be but it happens. After they get washed out, one guy grabs the raft and tries to get in, but of course it's tough. The guide just watches the events unfold, not even gently suggesting "uh, guys, if old Steve-o there should slip under the raft he'll be pinned too, but without air and stuff, so maybe you should intensify your efforts some, eh?" The guide just looks on...

Rafting in New Zealand...bring your own guide or a blindfold and a cigarette. I've been a guide and I've seen some really really poor choices made on the river usually involving drugs, alcohol, subpar IQ's, rednecks or a combination there of. I suspect these guides are exhibiting some of said decision making handicaps. Good footage tho' and thanks for the heads up when traveling to Kiwi land.
