Fantastic movie. The black and white really sets the tone of the film. One question though. what is Debbie saying right before Ian says "who do you think?" Sounds like she's saying "who's the writer there?" or something like that...
the past few days i've been thinking of corbjin's imagery of joy division as an inspiration for some photography for school. Only just checking him out now but he already seems a fucken genius.
he is the closest to god, VIVA all kind of rock, punk, metal etc 4EVER, I'm from Mexico you couldn't imagine all the shit music that there are here I hate mexican music, english and american rock music are the best.
"..He waved it in front of the camera like this.." I loved that part. Otherwise, I really liked this movie. I've heard of Joy Division before, but then after watching this, I kicked myself in the ass for never bothering to check them out. You don't even have to know the band to actually like the movie, hell, you'll probably go listen to "Love will tear us apart" once the movie is done.
Ugh. What a boring, self-absorbed waste of time. I grew up in the 70's and 80's. I was a fan of New Order. I listened to their music DURING THE ERA IT WAS RELEASED! I see no point in this movie. When are movie bio's ever in the least bit interesting? Never! Rather than making a movie that might have celebrated Ian's art and life, we wind up this drivel instead. You think he would have been happy knowing this piece of shit is how his art will be memorialized?
@rofyle i actually agree. Sam Riley is a decent actor but why would you bother watching a cast of actors basically LYING and ACTING as opposed to listening to and watching the real deal, Joy Division, and the only Ian Curtis.
@slangshotstudios Well, you can listen to a limited amount of Joy Division songs, and what...they have like 5 videos of them playing, that's it. This movie is very informative for those wishing to know Curtis' life a little before Joy Division and during. It's funny as you act like a tribute movie is a bad thing. Your's and rofyle's comments are nonsense.
@imaginenovel I absolutely agree with you, my point was simply that it's funny how the story changes depending on who tells it. Even Annik is supposedly portrayed differently, according to the book she was a tenacious demanding cow who actually wasn't terribly nice to Ian. But as I said I absolutely agree with what you said, we will never know what went on his mind but personally I think if he had lived he would have been diagnosed with some kind of 'Disorder'! lol
A great movie, and a wonderful Ian look-alike. His singing was not completely the same but was good, and I completely teared up when "Love Will Tear Us Apart" started playing. I'm still confused though about why he committed suicide (although I suspect it has to do with him being stuck between his career and his girlfriends) but the movie did not make it clear at all...he looked exactly like Ian in the LWTUA music video shoot. I'd say the actor was a lot better than the film.
@fufufuyen It was 100% clear why he did what he did. If you didn't see that in the film, then you didn't watch the film at all. He was lost and actually didn't fit in with the band; he was also lost in his personal life and didn't fit in there either - where else was there for him to go?
@fufufuyen It was 100% clear why he did what he did. If you didn't see that in the film, then you didn't watch the film at all. He was lost and actually didn't fit in with the band; he was also lost in his personal life and didn't fit in there either - where else was there for him to go?
@scottalias, the big thing left out was the fact that Ian Curtis in reality was a narcissistic, abusive, hypocritical control freak. Dont get me wrong I love Joy Division and Control but read Debbie Curtis' book and your view of Ian Curtis will be changed dramatically!
@soon2bmrsk the book was merely inspiration for the film. everything collected about Ian Curtis is biased, and we will never know what really went on in his fantastic but neurotic mind of his. it's always important to remember that Ian was an actual person with real human emotions and behaviors, and that shouldn't necessarily be looked down upon because it only emphasis how imperfect he was and in truth shows glimpse on who he was as an individual without the band Joy Division added to his name
@scottalias I agree. I think it was the reasoning behind his suicide; the movie was rather vague, and filled in with paste if I could say it any worst. It was a good two hours but I believe it could have been better.
Fuck, "Never say Never" Justin Bieber cant match ever Ian Curtis, Justin is just some stupid pop Icon artist... Ian is a legend.
Who wants to see a movie about a 16 year old spoiled canadian kid?!.
I'd rather see a movie about a tormented and depressed genius who took his life bacuase of the cruelty in the world... Whitch you can hear in his beatifull art known as music...
I've loved JD since my pre teens - I took a trip to Macclesfield in early 2007, and that along with the release of Control later in the year, inspired me to write 'Monochrome', which I've now posted my demo of on my page - the lyrics are about Ian and I feel the style is indebted to JD.
joy divison, my religion.....Very good movie. But in negative thing is that a smoked amye 12 cigs while i was looking at it :D..Ian. what a smoker ? :D...
the best music bio film i have seen so far! I enjoyed Ian helping the boy with down syndrome find employment! "I like to eat & watch telly" <----Who doesn't? LOL.
Although I wish they had played more depressive songs from Closer such as "Decades" & "Eternal" It would have given the film a realistic depth with the music. Not saying the film wasn't emotionally deep but I'm sure it would have worked!
@killforfiend i see what your saying and i had an idea at the end when they played atmosphere i thought if they screw this up it will just ruin the movie but its fitted well. But i see what your saying :)
@skaterpanny It's based primarily on Debbie Curtis' biography of Ian "Touching From A Distance" - it does miss stuff out, and it is a little two dimensional at times, but still a good movie in my opinion.
para todos los fanaticos de esta gran banda no permitire que este album se termine con 2 canciones... el 2 de enero colgare mi primer single no me fallen acabemos con la basura comercial trivial por M M pasen la voz

It was difficult for me to feel empathy for his character in this movie. I just wanted to shake him and say: "Stop fucking up your life dude!" Shows what I know about mental illness.
@Pickwickmusic Well, no one ever actually said he was mentally ill. I could feel empathy for him if I tried hard enough, but I didn't feel any sympathy at all- he treated his wife so badly and seemed completely indifferent to his own child, to me he seemed like a selfish, whiny sniveling brat too weak and passive to tackle problems that all had reasonable solutions.
Great biopic!! Sam Riley as Ian Curtis is a very good choice! He did a great job. ademas de enterarme de su tragica historia, como me acuerdo la primera vez que en que escuche LOVE WILL TEAR US APART, JOY DIVISION fue el inicio de todo!!!
Great movie. The book is very good too, apart from the fact that Debbie tries to make herself out as a saint and a victim... manipulative bitch.. no wonder Ian hung himself.
I've just seen the film and i think its fair to say that it totally blew my mind.. its amazingly directed and photographed and has a lot to say. it could have easily been ruined by bad acting performance, but the actors did a great job - so did the director. loved it! and will always love joy divison
@loser2356 My brother was a Joy Division fan, he hanged himself in 1994. He was just like Ian Curtis 23 years old. When I saw this movie the first time, when his wife is crying for help it made me cry too. And I'm not talking about tears in my eyes, it was more like an explosion.
Samanther Nortan was good in this, and a lot prettyer than the real Debbie, the real Debbie was a right dog, I'm not suprised Ian Curtis was shaggin that German bird on the quiet.
simply incredible movie...realy puts a story behind ian's songs and suffering. the actor that played him nails it. when i first saw the performances i thought they used real footage of JD
this movie became quickly one of my all time faves... its wonderful. the actors are incredibly good, oh my. its almost real. after seeing it i got a little depressing though, lol
Fantastic movie. The black and white really sets the tone of the film. One question though. what is Debbie saying right before Ian says "who do you think?" Sounds like she's saying "who's the writer there?" or something like that...

@loser2356 My brother was a Joy Division fan, he hanged himself in 1994. He was just like Ian Curtis 23 years old. When I saw this movie the first time, when his wife is crying for help it made me cry too. And I'm not talking about tears in my eyes, it was more like an explosion.

I love how they use my favourite song of all time in the trailer.
