In the early 70s I sang part of this song with Mary. I was the only survivor of my unit in Nam, so in the middle of this song, I broke down in tears, so Mary just held me. Shortly afterwords, I left, and never saw her until twenty years later. She was with her oldest daughter. I was surprised when she not only recognized me but remembered my name. Oddly enough, we were both on our downward struggle of health issues.
A handmade music box that played this song was what my grandfather proposed to my grandmother with. When I was 10, she gave it to me. I keep it on my nightstand to this day.
I saw them live in Atlanta in 02. The house was half full because of the war mongering republicans in this state. It was a shame on Americans that they have not ever learned. Now the full circle thing: an unending conflict with so many young men being affected, this recent atomic incident. We need protests and sit ins like those cats did it then! They used their voice, and not on IPods either. They used them where it mattered.
I always end up in tears when listening to this song... It is clear that most of the humans do not want what ever the politicians are driving them to do, and that there is hope for love and peace... It is only a matter of awareness...
I left on a Jet Plane in 1969; thank God I made it Back.
Bring all of our children Home Right now and Defend our Sovereign United States Borders and at Sea, without a Congressional Declaration of WAR, since 1942.
@sawilliams0803 War means money, and People are greedy. We as a people and specie are doomed to this mistake, always have been since the first recorded war in 2700 BC to the present. We have not yet learned, nor will we learn until we all leave the face of this scarred planet
Lets hope that everyone understands and learns from these lyrics. Mary rest in peace you had the voice of an angel hopefuly they now know how lucky they are
The three part harmony of Peter, Paul and Mary, combined with their search for social justice in the songs resonated with the American public. They marched with Martin Luther King Jr and sang in Washington when he gave his "I have a Dream" speach. They were fierce opponents of the Vietnam War and the conflict in El Salvador and more. They won five Grammy Awards, for songs like, Puff the Magic Dragon, (no, not a song about pot!),. Oh, and so many, many more..We will miss her much.
I met all 3 personally. Had a Heineken with Mary, she said, "Shit it's hot our there" after the concert, just me, her and my younger sister. Paul told me to buy a nylon string guitar instead of steel string and I did.
I am 38, do you know how hard it is to watch everyone who changed our world die this year? If not, YOU WILL. Enjoy it them while you have them, those people who affect your life.
Everybody dies, good and bad people everywhere. It's our job to keep their memories real and true. Maybe, just maybe, that technology like YouTube will help keep the good alive everywhere. Where have all the flowers gone? They're still here, in our hearts, everywhere.
RIP Mary, you will be missed, but one day we will all be together again. Your music has inspired so many people to do so many great things for peace, thank you for being a shining star on our earth.
You will be missed, Mary! I'm afraid we won't ever hear this type of music ever again!! It was a simple time. Sure, it was a tough time with the Vietnam war and all but it was a beautiful time as well with the wonderful music!
I feel like I've lost a personal friend -PPM was one of the strongest and best influences in my musical and social conscience of my youth. It won't be the same, but it will carry on.
Peace for Mary, and have loved PP&M since a child. Now as an adult i have felt anger toward war and people and when i now hear this song again sung with true emotion to seek peace and understanding i feel peaceful somehow.
Shed a tear for Mary ... hope she's sitting someplace with Karen Carpenter and Cass Elliott and John Denver - the people who taught me how to harmonize.
I came here after hearing about the passing of Mary Travers (RIP)... and I remember singing this with a group of Japanese English teachers in the back yard of a professor's house in Minnesota... As I watch this video and recall the past... and think of the present... tears flow down. May the world come to know this music once again, and strive to do better because of it.
To all who can watch this deeply moving song and only think to leave nasty comments about politics...when will they ever learn? I honestly feel sorry for you.
Does anyone remember when the redid this to "Where have all the children gone" for the gun campaign commercials? let me know if you know where I can find it
