  • oh my.

  • A great theme song for this movie would be "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Metallica.

  • THE QUASIMODO IN THIS FILM LOOKS LIKE MUAMAR!

  • Lon Chaney was the ispirator of Bela Lugosi... nice movie... first movie of Universal Monster saga.

  • Lon Chaney is the best. End of story.

  • I actually saw a show that had Lon Chaney guest starring, & he was actually pretty average looking (compared 2 today's actors).

  • What did the note say?

  • Why does the mother leave the child in the apartment alone? Maybe that's why the gypsys took her away.

  • 4 people are douchbags

  • just bought a 50 dvd pack of classic horror movies and so far all the ones ive watched have been on youtube. drat...

  • @profssrfunk Well, now you'll have them for your children or.....something. :)

  • To bad the Oscars were not going back in 1923, because if they were Lon Chaney would have won for Best Actor easy that year, no one else could have beaten him that year.

Such a great performance right here, every new actor should be required to watch this in acting school in order to learn how to act without speaking and how to do an epic make up job.

  • this movie kicks ass for an old movie thats silent

  • One day, silent movies will make a comeback.

  • That's the best Esmeralda I've seen in any movie adaption. She's almost exactly like I pictured her in the book.

  • Thank goodness for public domain!!!

  • holy crap! And I thought Quasimoto in the Disney version looked creepy! I only saw him for 2 seconds and I'm scared to death!!!!!

  • I don't know who that is as Quasimodo, but his face rings a bell *doom doom ch* I'M HERE ALL WEEK!!

  • @docturlough It's Lon Chaney

  • @Masterbaterbear You didn't get the joke at all, did you?

  • @docturlough roflmao XD

  • THE PART FROM 1:16:35 TO 1:16:50 WAS SEEN IN CYNDI LAUPER'S VIDEO OF GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN! AMAZING

  • I find the similarity between The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera very interesting. Both stories took place in Paris, France and both Erik and Quasimodo were deformed men, shut away from the world, who fell madly in love with a woman. Haha, and both characters were played by Lon Chaney. :)

  • @heheCRAZYhehe They also both made lovely music.

  • @docturlough that too (:

  • lon chaney is amazing :)

  • Classic, that's all I have to say!!!!

  • I have included so many of your uploaded films into my favourite list. I watch them time and time again. thank you.

  • this is pretty cool lol is it like where the original idea came from or what? just wonderin...

  • OK... quick question: are you getting these off of Turner Classic Movies? Because I see a lot of familiar titles...

  • OMG! This is so cool! How did you get a movie from 1923 and put on youtube? However you did it, thank you :D

  • LON FRICKEN CHANEY

    now he was a legend!

  • my favorite film from the 20s thanks dude love this film :)

  • @Luckystrike502 - Thanks. I love what you've done with the classic films.

  • nice too see a movie from the silent era, where the music is fitting well with picture :) thanks for this upload

  • this movie was really good back then, not that its bad now but serioucly people? If you watched this a long time ago when there were no color films or extremely good actors don't you think you would have liked it? If you don't like it then don't watch it.

  • Is this movie considered a horror film?

  • @eggs2112 I would say Drama

  • Your a star for uploading this entire movie ^^

  • Classic.....Not bad either.

  • Lon Chaney .....Fan Good Movie

  • Funny music :P

  • Aren't Esmeralda and the Quasimodo supposed to die in the end? Also she is supposed to lie in a graveyard and Quasimodo lies next to her, embracing her corpse. Or something.

  • @RenamonSakuya

His bones turn to dust as they try to separate the skeletons.

There's not a single movie version of Hunchback that's completely true to the book, but I don't mind these adaptions.

  • @KayaOfAyalia That appears to be possible. Well, it appears to be it is left for the readers and watchers to think for themselves anyways.

    Different people, different interpretations.

  • @RenamonSakuya

I love the book. It's my favourite novel right now. I thought the way it ended was soul-crushing, and horrible, but beautiful. This story puts 'Wuthering Heights' to shame.

  • @KayaOfAyalia Oh that sounds marvelous, I got the creeps reading what you've just written. Sadly all I know about the novel, I got from wikipedia, thus I am not quite aware of its affection. But I would love to read it aswell. I might go to the library this week~.

  • @RenamonSakuya

You don't need to. it's public domain so you can read it on the Net for free

  • @xxkewldudexx Oh! That is just marvelous, thank you!

  • I saw this at Princeton University with a great organist. And I was just at Notre Dame last spring with all the arbres de jeudi in bloom... nothing like the Seine and the ile de la Cite.

  • VERY pretty, indeed. ;)

LOL'D. This film is so awkwardly bad, due to it's age, that it's funny.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA

  • Lol it's kinda funny xD

  • the book is amazing. so is this film :)

  • i cant believe some people hate movies just because they are black and white. i guess they are stupid and dont understand the movie undless some colourfull people blow stuff up and talk simple.

  • i agree with you that some black and white movies are gems...however i dont like this one. and because like all people of the 21st century, i like movies to be, believable, with characters that feel almost tangible... for which actors with SKILL are employed....this is a bunch of shit with people bouncing in a square... the music DOES NOTHING for it, and the frames are sequenced idiotically...im sorry to say, but its garbage...

  • @kIwiZaLegEND Then try to make a better movie, with the equipment almost a houndred year old. And we talk again.

  • @RenamonSakuya MY EXACT POINT WAS THAT I DONT FIND IT ENTERTAINING TO WATCH. why in all hells would i attempt to recreate this garbage? '

the script (if you can call those tedious 20 second slides a script) is juvenile, the acting is obnoxious, and i have no use for it...

  • @kIwiZaLegEND Gawd, then don't search for old movies and rate them...

  • im sure it was fine when it came out.... but then again i remember millions of people queing up to see Schwarzenneger movies too...

  • @themaster0fclimax im now into these old silent films

  • @themaster0fclimax I AGREE WITH YOU! BACK IN THE VERY OLD GOOD DAYS, ACTORS HAD GREAT TEAM SPIRIT! NOT LIKE NOW!

  • @themaster0fclimax I have no reason why, but black and white movies always horrify me. I can watch a brand new ''scary'' film and not be scared, but when I watch an old black and white movie I always somehow get startled and panic.. it's a shame, I bet I could enjoy many of the old movies but it's like there's a force preventing me from doing that

  • @themaster0fclimax LIKE IN THIS MOVIE, QUASIMODO IS ACCUSED OF BEING A CROOK DUE TO HIS APPEARANCE! WE LEARN FROM THIS FILM THAT THE COWEL DOES NOT MAKE THE MONK! TODAY'S MOVIES ARE FAR WORSE THAN A MOVIE LIKE THIS!

  • lolz @ ending

  • inorite

  • I love this version.

  • Haha!! Now every time I see a silent film, Lon Chaney is in it!!!!

  • thank you for that one!

  • lol the monkeys xD

  • I remember seeing this as a child. Thank you for uploading it!

  • @t4t5 HOLY SHIT HOW OLD R U NAO!!

  • classic

  • This and the 1939 movie are the best versions.

  • i want to be phoebus

  • Ohhh, THANKS 4 downloading this movie.

  • I'm having trouble downloading this from the archive. can you please have the download link on here? that would be great. thank you.

  • *screams "Erik!" a bajillion times*

  • The bests film horror are of the Universal Pictures

  • lol seriously?

  • Omg! How did you manage to upload the whole movie with YT's copywright and 10 min limit?! O.o Cool! Vox Lumiere did a fantastic new rendition of this! Even got to see it live in the front row and meet them XD

  • thank you so much. i love this film so far.

  • You're welcome.

  • VERY COOL! A film by Carl Laemlle..founder of Universal Pictures!

  • :-)

  • @LuckyStrike502 how long did it take to upload?

  • @thenudo holy shit for real??? :O thats amazing! haha

  • @tomhulcelover yeah - it was him, William Fox (of 20th Century), and Harry Warner (1 of the 4 Warner Bros) that successfully broke Thomas Edison's patients in Supreme Court to make films the way they wanted. It freed film pioneers who had miagrated to Cali to escape the patients .. to make the kind of films they wanted..which led to this gem.

  • @thenudo thats cool haha thanx for answering

  • @thenudo He was the founder of Universal Pictures? When did he die, I wonder?

  • @beccaiscolness4life He died of a massive heart attack on the morning of September 24th, 1939

  • thank you for this upload yet another great classic silent movie

to watch a movie that was way before my time is amazing

  • You're welcome!
