You mean increase guess work. You have to dig the hole to the size of the pond and then backfill. With liner you dig the hole to what shape you want and no backfill process.
I l've built my own ponds, and now I have one preformed pond. The preformed was actually harder to install because you have to dig to the pond's shape, and if it has various depths and contours it's a pain. The advantage is burrowing animals won't destroy it, and topside predators won't rip a hole or knock a side over.
My main issue with pre-formed ponds is that they are rarely deep enough for fish to get deeper han where herons can wade. When I first tried all my fish were gone in less than a week. Had to go 4 feet deep to keep the fish safe.
the only thing on this is that you cant install a skimmer filter on these, so make sure you install it where there is not much leaves falling in to it or other types of debris
preformed pondliners are great when you dont want your pond deep enough, or large enough to house fish year round.

Those preformed ponds by Laguna are well made. Here the "soil" is cement lol its florida rocks and sand a nightmare to dig.
we have a 60 pond pond for pair of jack demseys but going with much bigger one
