I was cooking turkey bacon this morning when I thought - "these things will turn into crispy critters"- then the jingle started playing in my head and here I am.
I've been looking for this commercial for AGES but couldn't remember anything about it, and I finally stumble onto it accidentally without even trying!!!
@wakebreakers You weren't missing much. I was in the same boat as a kid. I got to try it one time, but I dare not try it again. It was terrible. If I'd compare it to Puffed Wheat, I think Puffed Wheat would win out against that stuff. And that's saying something :P.
Haha...I always remembered a funny-looking yellow thing saying, "Indubitably," and I remembered there had been a book about him and his friends (I read it in a dentist's office as a kid). I didn't know he was just the spokespuppet for a short-lived cereal.
This cereal was re-issued by Post in 1987after being unsuccessfully tested during the 1960s. This second attempt to popularize this cereal was also unsuccessful and was discontinued shorty thereafter.
Post Crispy Critters was popular in the 60's too! I loved them as a kid! I think the song went.."The only type of cereal that comes in the shape of animals"!
Jimmy Durante's character...Hot, cha, cha, cha! Did you ever have the feeling that you wanted to go? Was Durante's song (I think).
Wow. You know, I'd only just recently succeeded in erasing most of this commercial's residue from my brain following my last exposure. Thanks a lot, Jhonen. Thanks a LOT.
this ceareal was disgusting, maybe because of the LOW sugar the commercials boasted but I was sold anyways, tried it and never had it again...I went to granola which hurt my mouth LESS LMAO!
I was born in 1987 and my mum named me Kristen but my nickname was crispy critter and so she would sing this song to me and it would annoy me so much when she got the with lot's of crunch part I would always yell back "I DON"T HAVE CRUNCH!"
I used to love this cereal. Funny how my memories of this cereal is linked to the show Zoobilee Zoo. I would watch that show in the mornings and chow down on my bowl of Crispy Critters. Good times. Indubitably!
I used to have the book where all the animals were in the forest and they made a friend named Acorn, I don't know what happened to it. I still have the book called "The Birthday Band." I don't remember the cereal, though...I think it came out before I was born.
I loved that cereal, I wish I could get ahold of some just to see if they still taste as good as I remember ( they probably don't LOL!) for some reason, no one I know remembers this existed except me. I remember being a little kid with my mom at the grocery store and she'd say, "pick a cereal." I would get that every time, until it suddenly disappeared. that was the moment when I started picking cereals for the prizes inside. haha!
lots of kids nowadays know Jimmy Durante from the first Frosty the Snoman cartoon. He was the narrator... been dead for decades, but he lives on because he did some silly voiceover job in a cartoon. If you want to be famous forever, do cartoon voiceover (as yourself, of course!)
Haha!! I guess that things says it because he's supposed to be like Jimmy Durante with the big nose and odd way of talking - and Jimmy Durante was known for saying "Ah cha cha cha."
My parents were hippies, and we weren't allowed to have any cereal brands you would recognize. I am assuming the crap we had to eat was much worse than this. Hippy-brand wheat flakes (no sugar added!), sugar-free oatmeal, and that's just the stuff I will admit to having eaten.
Can somebody help a nearly-50-year-old guy here? I remember how horrible this stuff tasted when it came out in the 80s, but wasn't it tastier in the 1960s, almost exactly like Alpha-Bits? I honestly don't remember....(no one would go for "low sugar" cereals on the 60s)
Crispy is clearly based on Durante. However, it also seems obvious he did not provide the actual voice, partly because he'd died a few years before this ad even came out.
I had this cereal ONCE, when I was a kid, visiting Michigan with family, as we couldn't buy it back home in Canada. To this day, I only have two words to describe it: Fucking disgusting! I can still taste it. *shudder*
I pity the poor fool who get this song stuck in his head.

They probably should've picked a different name, though, since a "crispy critter" sounds like some unfortunate deep fried animal.
