Question? Question, please? Why did they bother changing the music in this scene? Tangerine Dream MADE the scene enchanting and captivating, and creepy and sinful. WHY did they change it?! Now I feel NOTHING in this scene! :(
@KatiKosta from Wikipedia ;) : Due to the changes in the film from its European and American releases, Legend has two different soundtracks. The first, produced and composed by Jerry Goldsmith, was used for its initial European release and restored in the director's cut edition of the Region 1 DVD release. The second soundtrack features music by German electronic artists Tangerine Dream and was used for the initial theatrical and home video releases in the United States.
anyone know the demons name!!?? i need to know this! it's killing me. he's soo cool! *drools over him* O.O ... XD i need to know!! please message me if you can :D
With Tangerine Dream music this is one of my favorite scenes in the movie, without Tangerine Dream it's so bland and boring and downright laughable. I have never been able to watch the director's cut because the music just makes it a freakin' joke, sounds like a damn disney movie. One of the few times producer intereference helped.
i LOVED this movie and have seen it many times but i've never seen this version, with this music. i like the music in this one but i have to agree, the tangerine dream version is WAY better. i dont even know who this JG is anyway.
Man what a scene...speaks volumes...I can't tell you how much I love it and its message of the dangers brought about by materialism and vanity..falling in love with the world and its decadence bringing about bad things. Ridley Scott knows what's up...
This is my all time favorite part of the whole movie, but I'm so glad they did away with the song that's on here cuz it doesn't sell the scene for me. I can only love whats on video together in the final production.
I had watched the American version so many times before I knew of the original version...I had always loved Legend, but when I watched the restored version, music and all, I was overcome by the beauty of this scene, so much that I wept. To me, this is probably the most hauntingly beautiful scene in a fantasy film.
Been a fan of JG for a long time but TD version is just so much more magestic and fantastic! It added it's own character to a great story cast and vision! The JG is very good and can see why people like it but just lacks vision to me!
@sw1000xg Couldn't agree more. The TD feels like a completely different film. The scene where Jack kisses Oona/Lily without that music... it just lacks everything.
Very different from the American version, with different pacing and editing altogether. As much as I love love the Tangerine Dream score, Jerry Goldsmith's adds a very dark, haunting mood to the scene that makes it even more powerful as result..
My god i love this movie. I just recently found it on netflix and i had completely forgotten about this movie cause i watched it when i was really little, and let me just say, seeing this scene that freaked me out so much as a child made me smile that i had finally found it again :)
I like the TD score better due to I was a teen when this came out and that music has now forever imbedded in my memory. Memories of great still and this score isn't as moving for me. I get why others like the Goldsmith one and how it fits in with the Scott of now. But nothing can replace great Nostalgia... though I do wish this "cut" as in visuals made it in the original release. When I saw this version the first time I thought why didn't this make it in. Vote: music for TD - visual this cut.
I'm trying to give Goldsmith's version a shot but his score is too big and bombastic for this film. This is a small, quiet, intimate movie, not a sweeping epic. The other music flows much better, and is eery and spooky.
@MYTMIC Tell that to Ridley Scott. He wanted epic, he wanted the score to be grand and bombastic - operatic even. The DC is really a different film in every way from the producer's U.S. Theatrical release
@thereefshark Ridley is confused by his own creation, the Director's cut is no epic either, I mean what are there, 10 people in the entire film? This is no Lord of the Rings yet Goldsmith is writing like it is. Maybe Eurupeans, used to the DC, see this film as taking place in medieval Europe thus justifying the typical fantasy score, this version sounds more like Conan the Barbarian or something like that. But I see this netherworld, some other time, place, or realm, US version captures that.
@MYTMIC Are you at all familiar with the films and other fantasy works Ridley based LEGEND on? And I didn't use the term "epic": I said it was operatic, because when you look at Ridley's set up it is almost like an opera without singing (well...except for one scene...).
But if you want to throw the term around LEGEND technically does count as "Epic" as it is traditionally formatted confrontation between the forces of "Good and Evil". "Epic" doesn't always require a huge cast to fit the term
I love Goldsmith's score here. Haunting, creepy, seductive...It really is in the style of Cocteau's classics! It is just so very operatic, grand, and over the top- but that's exactly how it should be given Ridley's motivation behind LEGEND. This and Darkness' theme are Goldsmith's real stand out tracks for the film
the most powerful scene in the movie with the goldsmith score. Notice the break of joy of dancing changed to fear shock and terror from the princess point of view. Amazing. In the tangerine dream score version its like donkey kong appears, but here, it is the lord of darkness!
I can't help it the Tangerine Dream music for this exact was much better. As a whole I prefer the Directors cut but not this music for this scene. The Tangerine Dream music is haunting and Mystical like the movie. when I wacch both version the Tangerine Dream version gives a feeling of nnostalgia ad magical while the music from this one dulls that feeling. Now if I could have the Director's Cut with the Tangerine Dream music that would be awesome. Because I do like the added scenes.
This version is all wrong. I'm not sure I'd ever want to see this movie with this score. It's just not powerful enough. I can see why the test audience did not like it and why Scott decided to use Tangerine Dream.
@mrsparkle001 Scott prefers Jerry Goldsmith. It was the producers who made him use Tangerine Dream in the United States cut of the film because they wanted it to be more like the other 1980s fantasy films.
@thereefshark and the Director's Cut is not as well liked. Legend's soundtrack is a big part of it's appeal, much like Highlander's featuring Queen, or Star Wars featuring the incredible John Williams. A generic soundtrack just doesn't fit, and the test screening audience apparently agreed. Now it's a classic film with a beloved soundtrack that's still in demand.
@mrsparkle001 I have to disagree. Most of the time I see the fans of the U.S. cut and Ridley Scott's DC (and the International Cut that also featured Goldsmith) are evenly divided. The Tangerine Dream soundtrack is nice, but it clearly does not fit in with Scott's vision, which was meant to evoke John Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast.
For the DC JG's score is far more fitting. The US cut TD is the best fit. Both versions flow very differently and their different soundtracks reflect it
@mrsparkle001 Most people who grew up with the US cut love the TD score, but most people I meet who didn't grow up with that cut far prefer Goldsmith's score and feel the darker, more ambiguous cut of the film is a better cut.
I prefer Goldsmith because it is far more in keeping with a Ridley Scott film. The TD score is more of your typical 1980s fantasy film where they tried new-age ideas in the soundtracks. That soundtrack is great for Nostalgia, but it doesn't really fit Ridley Scott
I first saw this movie probably when I was seven and loved it ever since. This is the first time i found it again in about 8 years and this is still my favorite scene!
I love this one more! Even though i saw Tangerine Version first and then the Director's cut i immediately fell in love with Jerry Goldsmith's music its too beautiful its incredible, i feel like i'm Lily and i go around in circles when i listen to it.....I know Jerry is arranging the music the angels sing in heaven....he was truly a genius
that would really suck if the Prince of Darkness fell in love with you and held you captive and made you his bride. I mean, how do you get out of that? LOL..
@UzALyinDevil Lol yeah i know what ya mean...if i were in her shoes and the unicorn did get killed....i guess after a while i'd have to play along with the whole "queen of darkness" role ya know?
the music climaxed better when she transformed in the theatrical version. but... i love all the extra scenes xoxo Set decoration is Top notch! I LOVE THAT freakin FIREPLACE. WOW!!! decoration and detail galore!! This movie soooooooo granted ALL of a fantasy dreamer's Wishes! xoxo grimm farytale style
I think the real problem with this music is simply that it isn't dance music - there is no beat for you to move to, and so the dancing looks and feels less natural. The Tangerine Dream song is a waltz, and it works much better.
I don't know why people are making such a fuss over the music in this scene. I specifically looked up this scene because of the music played within it. I, for one, enjoy this music very much. And as for the Tangerine Dream version, its too is very well done.
Dude, it's got to be said, the scene at 3:50 where they're running along the table looks like I'm watching figure skating, I'm glad it's not in the us version, I love this scene don't get me wrong just that tiny bit from this scene bugs me so much
@M00TAH yeah, it sounds like the music from a million other movies. the Tangerine Dream song was very unique. that's half of what made this scene so great in my opinion.
The scene when Lily first sees the the Unicorns on the US cut is so moving with the music, as is the scene when Jack asks for forgiveness.
Not to mention the classic Bryan Ferry track on the credits.
However this scene in which Lily is seduced into the bridal gown has always been my favourite scene from the entire film and the JG score captures everything about it perfectly.
@FenixWritten You do realise that Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack was the original, and was replaced by Tangerine Dream's soundtrack for the US version, right?
