I had this when I was a kid. I was way too young to have this as I couldn't figure out how to do anything with it other then sit on it and ride around on it. I remember one time in the middle of the night the robot turned on and started talking and making really loud beeping sounds and my mom burst into my room and we were frantically trying to turn the damn thing off. I must have set the alarm by accident.
i always wanted robie senior!! i got robie jr. for christmas one year, but he was destroyed in a car accident back in 2004. i still had the box and instructions and everything!
@UnknownFlyingPancake Actually, I did some reasearch and it is. Just type in robie sr. in google. It was similar to omnibot in the fact that it uses recordable casssettes. Look it up, its really cool!!
Looks like the other Chatbot is no longer for sale :( I should have just taken a chance on it. But I may be interested in selling mine. Send me an e-mail and and I will send some pics to see if you might be interested. edub101@msn.com
I'm sure I have found the right guy to answer my question. I recently bought a Chatbot without a remote. Is there any upgrade that be done to make it work again? There is another one for sale with the remote but the robot is broken. I'm willing to buy that one as well just to get the remote. However I'm not sure will it control mine?
Since these robots used very simple control tones, it's just a matter of buying one of those adapters used to play an iPod or cd player through a cassette deck, placing it into the robots tape deck (minding the wire when closing) and plugging the other end to a computer's sound card (use a headphon extention cord!) and running a program that sounds the appropriate tones. Instant computer interface.
This would be great to use with an old Palm Pilot and a sensor harness connected to the PDA
@romancandlefight -- I own this robot bought originaly from radioshack from 1986. It's actually not an internet voice over; this was the demo introduction tape that came with the original robot on what it can do and how to program it. You know...back in the day when radio shack made/sold some cool stuff and not just cell phones and batteries like they do today lol.
I have a question. Computer hardware and processing power and software has progressed so much since the 80's. Why have personal robots not also progressed? Where are they? What happened?
@BigFatLoserDude -- I wondered the same thing. Robots were a fab in the 80s even have TV shows like "Small Wonder". Than pfff they're gone. Today you dont see them as much.
@BigFatLoserDude hardware and software have advanced a lot since then, but there is still more to be done before personal robots can become practical.
If you want to know what the cutting-edge is today, look up the PR2 robot from WillowGarage, and also the Icub.
Cool vid! I remember seeing one of these in a magazine (one of the ones to the back and left of the one speaking) and very much wanted one. Parents couldn't afford it, though. Oh well...
I have one of these does anyone know if they are worth anything its the same one in the video I am doing a flea market on the weekend and not sure what to ask for it
The fifth tone is the actual control tone for the various movements, lights etc. Fun thing to do: Put a music tape in while the bot is switched to prog mode and watch it jerk about randomly. Just keep it away from any drops or breakables. :)
It would be a matter of writing a BASIC program that sounds the tones in the correct duration and pitch. You would record the audio from that program to a cassette.
You have a lot of old robots. Please do a "Omnibot serves a beer"-video. Haven't seen it for years cause I lost the remote. But I still have my 2000 waiting to get back to life.
I still have one of these for the moment

I don't think it's one of those. This is just a demo video. It's a radio controlled robot that you can program to do things.
