When anyone says "Merlin," I don't think of the real thing, and I don't think of any live-action movie incarnation of him either. For all eternity, any and all mentions of Merlin send my mind STRAIGHT to THIS Merlin, THIS song, and the fact that he used it to pack an entire house in one carry-on bag.
I love this film <3 I read also the book but it was a bit confusing in my opinion, so I like this film more than the book <3 Just imagine this scene with Colin Morgan as Emrys/old Merlin/ Dragoon the Great (however you prefer to call him ;-)). It would be absolutly hilarious xD
this film confused me enormously when i watched it yesterday...... why does he turn into a fish and then a squiral? i dont get it. plus the whole flatulence thing. odd disney film. much preffered lion king. thats a movie!
Man, this was such a fun part in an already fun movie. The Sword In The Stone is among my childhood favorite Disney movies, as well as one of my favorite Arthurian adaptions, along with Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Excalibur from 1981.
I wish I had a spell like that. That would be very handy. And I don't know why, but I always loved the way this movie was shot, especially when it cuts from Merlin's dancing feet to the fireplace flying though the air!
I reckon they should re-release all these old disney movies again, in full HD, frame for frame, 5.1 (or 7.1) surround sound (mainly for the music scenes) and have all the dialogue the same, animations the same, but... for lack of a better word, 'better'. most new cartoons are no where near as good as the old cartoons, and yet they are using great technology.
Haha love this song, but what I always didn't understand when I was a kid was, that why didn't the fireplace at the end set fire onto all the books and stuff?
It's clear that Disney was hoping for another hit like "Bibbity-Bobbity-Boo."
Not quite.
And I hate what he did to the source novel. In it, Merlin was a philosopher as well as a magician. Here, he's a bumbling old codger with magic powers.
"See here, sugar bowl, you're getting rough. That poor old tea set is crached ENOUGH!!" And then the sugar bowl smacks the teapot...LOLOLOL SINCE CHILDHOOD!!
Though often overlooked, this Disney movie had quite a few important themes that make it stand out, such as the importance of education. Even the indirect nod to education with the line, "Books first," while Merlin is packing puts a smile on my face. Merlin also used nature to teach Arthur. I love this movie.
@maiii0608 LOL! isn't it sugerboul??? haha. it would make more sence. but sugerboy is much more fun i agree! tihi XD "sugerboy you're getting afuly rough, that pour old teset is cracked enough!" (sorry my spelling, i'm swedish :P) and I like the swedish voice for merlin much better, but the english one is great too! :D
Nowadays in Disney movies all the songs are about like not fitting in, or wanting to be something, or being misunderstood etc. There aren't a lot of songs in the movies for entertainment value and fun. It's like the new movies try to manipulate you into liking the characters by making them sad and misunderstood and making you feel sorry for them were as the old movies focused on good music, animation and memorable characters instead.
@skrattkantarellen That is an interesting observation. I agree with what you are saying though. The older movies are just simpler and because of this, more entertaining.
@skrattkantarellen Disney's lyrics used to be more grim. Aladdin glorifies having slaves and being rich in "Prince Ali". Disney used to be darker (for the adults who realized what was going on), but subtly hidden behind innuendoes. It was awesome. What message does Aladdin have? To be a thief and a liar with lots of slaves, gold, power and women is good! Hercules did the same thing in the song "Zero to Hero". 101 Dalmatians was equally dark, Lady and the Tramp? Those were the days. :(
@skrattkantarellen i also miss the traditional animation, now that disney is switching over to CGI and 3D, I understand, keeping up with they times and making millions at the box office but Disney....Disney has changed and i'm not exactly pleased with where it has gone(disney channel is at blame for this 50%) but thats just my opinon :)
@skrattkantarellen How about Under the Sea, Be our Guest, Friend Like Me, Prince Ali, Hakuna Matata, Topsy Turvy, I'll Make a Man Out of You, Trashin the Camp, etc?
@skrattkantarellen I am sorry to say, although I will agree and say I love these movies... more than anything I have seen since the Classics ended, but you have to admit, there motives have not quit. Disney, like any art form, is a static picture in time, reflecting the past. This stuff is just as manipulating as the new stuff is, and they are so good at it that we still cant shake it... This is extreme early century modernist "ideal" and is the reflection on what persuasion is.
People this year when the film opens Winnie the Pooh must go to the cinema to see the movie to get a good result with the public. And Walt Disney Animation Studios can continue to make traditional animation
"Now don't you go getting the idea that Magic will solve all your problems...Because it won't! -_-" I love Merlin he is so funny I would love him for my teacher and he be great to talk to about problems.
I love the bit in the movie where they're squirrels and that fat old lady squirrel is after Merlin XD I think that fact that he's blue just completes it :P
this was my favorite movie in my childhood:D The owl was my favourite character nice to see this after such a long time. i'm sixteen now. even now this is really funny. the nowadays shit from disney sucks very hard compared to this. i feel sorry for the kids of this day and age.
I used to have a desk like the one swarming around Merlin after Archimedes called him "bungling blockhead". It was an antique roll-top desk that we found at my great-grandparents' house. I loved that thing. Pity I couldn't move it with me when I moved out of my house, it fell to pieces.
@phickase Couldn't have said it better myself. It was because of this movie that I want to pursue medieval studies, and am now obsessed with the Arthurian legends!! My favorite Disney movie EVER!!

Then I hear this song, and I imagine them all wearing bad holiday wear, doing amazing things with luggage and busting out catchy songs.
