This is why Craig is the best of all the late night hosts. And 463 people disliked this video because they only want funny 100% of the time...sorry but life doesn't work like that. - Good on you Craig for giving this story to your audience, I'm sure there are people who needed to hear this and I'm sure it did good.
@adelinewinkleman46 I have never understood why they needed to make movies out of a bad cartoon show. Michael Bay is a complete sellout. I lost all respect for him after he butchered actual history when he made Pearl Harbor. One of the worst war movies ever made.
Craig Ferguson is described on wikipedia as being a "recovering alcoholic who has been sober since 1992."
How long do you have to be sober before you're no longer "recovering?" Shouldn't it say, "Craig Ferguson was once an alcoholic?"
And no, you shouldn't mock Britney Spears' alcoholism. You should just ignore her when she does all those controversial things for attention and publicity. You should instead mock her terrible music and whatever else she puts out there for public consumption.
@instereovideos I think what it means is it's a condition that requires daily maintenance. ie. if you are an alcoholic, there is no "cure' in the sense that you can one day drink again. So if you don't drink for 15 years, to drink again will not only take you right back to where you left off, but chances are the drinking will progress and become even worse. So like Craig said, it's about vigilance. The term alcoholic, simply put, is one who cannot safely drink.
When I have some issues in my private life, when I fall back into bad habits, and feel that I cannot get myself right, I will watch this. While I am not an alcoholic or a drug addict, there are other behaviors that cause me pain & grief. Knowing that he went through such trouble, but was able to come out OK is inspiring.
Craig i love you man. (no homo, hahaha). you pown Jay, Dave, Colin, Jimmy(even though i love jimmy's thank you notes lol), and everyone else i didnt name. your awesome.
BTW. In case you didn't understand his implication of who exactly you should be calling if you have a drinking problem that have their numbers "near the front of the phone book," he's referring to Alcoholics Anonymous. Otherwise know as "A.A." Hence their relative position to the beginning of the phone book.
I just want to say good job Mr. Ferguson for 15 years of sobriety! I hope the rest of your life is more of the same. I love listening to you, your what I want in a entertainer and person....and thank you for sharing your life's experiences with us.
One of the greatest monologues from a late night network comedian ever... Seriously... The poise, empathy, and dignity shown in tackling a difficult and personal subject is extremely rare, and commendable. Much respect...

I always like Craig Ferguson and thought he was hilarious and a great comedian. Now I have also say that I really respect Craig Ferguson. Comedy with a purpose.
I had my last drink on the 23rd January 2004, and haven't touched alcohol (or caffeine) since then - and every single thing he says here makes perfect sense. I cannot tell you how amazing this video is, and how powerful! Very, very well done sir!
hmmm, wtg, :), even though this video was about drinkin, it kinda helped me think more about what to do about my mental health issue.......wow lol....inspiring Craig thank you.
To this day I'm still pretty ashamed that I laughed at Britney Spears. When you look back, it wasn't really that funny. It's why I wish everyone would stop talking about Charlie Sheen. We're encouraging someone's manic episodes. It's also why I can't stand watching American Idol auditions, where they make fun of people who are obviously mentally ill. What really upsets me is that even though I suffer from mental illness I laughed at those people as well.
that takes balls to say that on the air it shows how he doesnt care what other people think about him as long as he stays true to himself i respect craig so much more now
I think this is inspirational. For me its not a problem with alchol - only ever had a few sips of the stuff but I have a problem with Pepsi & with food. With the Pepsi - I can go cold turkey but with food - its a different story. You can't go cold turkey unless you want to starve to death.
To tell you the truth, I didn't like Craig Furgeson before.. I usually turn the tv off when I see he's on. But honestly, me being in recovery as well, it is very very very inspirational to see somebody make amends live on camera in front of an American audience. There are some amends that I still have to make that seem like chicken shit compared to getting on camera and telling a live audience. Thank you so much!!
Craig Ferguson is one of those rare types of people who know what it means to be a great person that can handle fame, make good jokes, and take 13 minutes out of his life to try to teach other people how to live well from his experiences. He came to this country with nothing but his history and a name, and he made himself one of the greatest comdeians and speakers I've ever had the privilage to hear. Craig Ferguson has changed the way I think about life and I am so glad he's here today.
@GeminisElement That was way cool. I like his jokes too, and the fact that yes, he said this is pretty smart. I drink socially (not as much anymore) but I hope this helps someone else, no mater if it's alcoholism or something else...we all need help sometimes!
Very insightful, good for him. I'm also in recovery and know that it's a chronic and fatal disease. Each day I wake up and tell myself I will stay sober and thank my creator for allowing me to stay sober. ***love***
He makes me proud to be Scottish. I love how he represents Scotland so well in the states, he reminds me so much of the everyday guy in the streets of Dundee or Edinburgh. And he gives props to our pals across the pond, the good ol' US of A.
Having read Craigs autobiography in the past few days I understand his speech even better. It's a miracle he's still alive. Thank God he found a way to fight his addictions.
Being a student in English (myself being french) , I find it very interesting how his scottish accent resurfaces as he is trying to express his feelings instead of running a show.
I love how he can talk about such a serious subject, be taken seriously, and still manage to keep it light enough that he doesn't make his audience uncomfortable. I just love him.

@RecoveryComedy. Dude, that is funny fuckin' shit, man. "You didn't quit, you just ran out." Fuck, man, fuckin' memories. You couldn't have said it better!
@dimransee. Sometimes loved ones are the problem. Nobody's perfect. I sure as hell ain't. It's called enabling. I think we all enable in some way or another. DSM IV diagnosis' are relevant, but addiction is far more complicated than that. In many ways, Brittney and Lindsay just need some fucking space. In other ways, they need a social context, a language, and a voice for their alcoholism, and very often this voice is a voice society doesn't want to hear about because it's the voice of Man.
My favorite smells: manure, vacuum dust, and the gasoline fumes at the gas pump. These have been my favorite smells my entire life. If addiction isn't a disease, I don't know what the fuck is. I mean, I'm sure it's other things as well, but it seems pretty fucking organic to me.
@TBone31270 Manure is not a smell that I like, however, vacuum dust, gasoline fumes, and cigarette smoke are one of my "favourite" smells too. I'm not sure why.
@TCshocker94. Read some books by Irvin Yalom. Heavy stuff, take it one step at a time. My father died when I was 18. I have no regrets, but alot of remorse. You have a chance to really change things for you guys. Do it. Like I said, put the problem of alcoholism into a social context. It will really put things into perspective. Alright, enough of this shit, or else I'm gonna need a fuckin' kleenex and someone to lean on. Good luck to you guys!
@TCshocker94. I was very angry and anti-social as a teenager. It's a bad way of livin' man. Develop a sense of humor. There is a book by John Bradshaw called "Healing The Shame That Binds You." It might give you a language for what you are going through. Think outside the box, especially if you want to help change your family's dynamics. Educate yourself. It's constant work, but well worth it. Tell your father you love him, even if you don't.
@TCshocker94. Go to some meetings with him. People have mixed feelings about this. Go anyways. For you, try finding some artists AA meetings locally. I attend AA and NA meetings for musicians, but you can also read poetry, etc. They might be something you can connect with, even if you don't think you're an alcoholic. I still refuse to accept I am an alcoholic. Don't let your ego fool you, partner. You're young. Change. Change the way you think about society in particular. It will help, alot!
im only 16 so i dont have a drinking problem. but my dad did. life was hell when he was drinking. but i so so proud to say that he is on his way to six years sober. august 25 will be six years for him. and WOW life is so much beteer with him sober.... CONGRATS DAD!!!!!!!!
Amazing video! Craig has such skill at taking such personal life experiences and taking the audience for a wild ride that is both touching and hilarious. The audience doesn't know what to expect next. Thank you Craig : )
Brit brit's issue was bipolar disorder though, right? her camp hasn't come out to say anything (i mean, I guess it's smart of them cos thedumbass media would crucify her as an unfit mother and reinforce neg ideas of people with chronic mental health disorders :/) but it's pretty much a widely recognised fact about her? she has some chronic mental health condition and those paps she was involved with were actually using her meds to drug her and keep her under their control and away from lovedones
Awesome accomplishments, folks. I have nothing but respect and love for people who do the hard work to make it out of the abyss of addiction and come out better people for it. My mother is one of those folks, and she's been clean and sober for almost 35 years after about 15 years of complete, "hopeless" alcoholism.
Guess what? She wasn't a hopeless case after all. No one is. Congratulations to all of you in recovery. I KNOW it isn't easy, but it's sooooo worth it. I got my mom back!
@jaywon06 Oh baby..I wish you PERFECT HEALTH. I don't know you..but I"m proud of you..Don't give up...don't..ever give up. You're in my prayers my dear.
@jaywon06 Oh baby..I wish you PERFECT HEALTH. I don't know you..but I"m proud of you..Don't give up...don't..ever give up. You're in my prayers my dear.
He tells it in a funny way but it´s actually ´damm serious. I just came to know
that a friend of mine is alcoholic and this is really serious! She smells alcohol in her dreams! He tells the absolut truth and we should all be aware that alcohol is a serious drug. A glas of wine with a nice dinner is so normal but for some people a real threat.
I have been sober one year and 2 months and as a recovering alcoholic Craig ferguson is truly an inspiration he truly knows what it is to be an alcoholic and what alcohlism is I have tons and tons of respect for him
Cut the audience some slack, guys. Being there, you'd feel as though you were expected to laugh until the tone of the monologue had fully settled in. I think everyone was sufficiently respectful by the end.
@MrSantaClaws1001 it's like if a comedian all of a sudden went on a rant about something deep and personal... you think it's all a joke until you realize it's not
it's not about being sheep it's about the setting, no need to jump on people for every little thing
@musiclineproduction I don't think he is. to be honest, but he's got a LOT of TV under his belt, even before his own show he'd worked in the biz for a decade or so
@MetallicBill well sure, he might.. but the way he is to his guest.. its just bad.. his monologue isnt that funny, especially when that bald guy in the background keeps repeating wat he says, and his top 10 list??? wat the hell is that.. ferguson is all natural
@musiclineproduction That Bald Guy, just happens to be legend. Ever see Spinal Tap?? SNL?? Wow, I just grew up on Letterman, all this since just jumps on a proven formula, Seeing Dave in recent weeks, I think his age is showing and he'll retire in a few years, I think he may have said as much, but you can see when he runs into some difficulty
Craig is one of my very favorites....... he can make terrible things sound reasonable, and is a very good icon of recovery and class. Good job, Craig!
@SCARLEMSCARS - it works if you work it...or so they say. God Bless and good luck dude. As a kid that has had a lot of alcoholics in his life, THEY do give a eff.
alcoholism is terrible...and I should know...I suffer from it. I've abused pretty much everything you can too, but it's the bottle that is the most harrowing...and it's legal. Isn't that a fucking trip?
@BarstoolBlues33 not to belittle what you have experienced, i dont mean to at all, but let me tell you, serious opiate addiction is far far worse than alchohol addiction. and by worse, i just mean more physically and mentally painful, im not tryig to say what alchoholics go through is easier or anything.
I wonder if Kevin Costner ever responded to this.

TBone31270 8 months ago
@TCshocker94. Go to some meetings with him. People have mixed feelings about this. Go anyways. For you, try finding some artists AA meetings locally. I attend AA and NA meetings for musicians, but you can also read poetry, etc. They might be something you can connect with, even if you don't think you're an alcoholic. I still refuse to accept I am an alcoholic. Don't let your ego fool you, partner. You're young. Change. Change the way you think about society in particular. It will help, alot!

Amazing video! Craig has such skill at taking such personal life experiences and taking the audience for a wild ride that is both touching and hilarious. The audience doesn't know what to expect next. Thank you Craig : )

Brit brit's issue was bipolar disorder though, right? her camp hasn't come out to say anything (i mean, I guess it's smart of them cos thedumbass media would crucify her as an unfit mother and reinforce neg ideas of people with chronic mental health disorders :/) but it's pretty much a widely recognised fact about her? she has some chronic mental health condition and those paps she was involved with were actually using her meds to drug her and keep her under their control and away from lovedones
dimransee 9 months ago
@dimransee it's really really sad tbh, he's a good guy for not saying anything about her
dimransee 9 months ago
Awesome accomplishments, folks. I have nothing but respect and love for people who do the hard work to make it out of the abyss of addiction and come out better people for it. My mother is one of those folks, and she's been clean and sober for almost 35 years after about 15 years of complete, "hopeless" alcoholism.
Guess what? She wasn't a hopeless case after all. No one is. Congratulations to all of you in recovery. I KNOW it isn't easy, but it's sooooo worth it. I got my mom back!

@thi711 He has about 350 people in his audience. Not all microphones are turned on in the audience.

Wow, I haven't seen a Craig video this old in a while. His accent was much thicker at this point.

I have been sober one year and 2 months and as a recovering alcoholic Craig ferguson is truly an inspiration he truly knows what it is to be an alcoholic and what alcohlism is I have tons and tons of respect for him
Ksuenoble 9 months ago 6
Cut the audience some slack, guys. Being there, you'd feel as though you were expected to laugh until the tone of the monologue had fully settled in. I think everyone was sufficiently respectful by the end.
Magnenator 9 months ago 89
@Magnenator
Yes, they were expected to laugh. So the sheep laugh. Wait, why shouldn't we criticize them again?
MrSantaClaws1001 8 months ago
@MrSantaClaws1001 it's like if a comedian all of a sudden went on a rant about something deep and personal... you think it's all a joke until you realize it's not
it's not about being sheep it's about the setting, no need to jump on people for every little thing

@Magnenator agreed. and the audience is being told to laugh...

MetallicBill 9 months ago
@MetallicBill as legendary as letterman?? letterman, for all we now, is a fucken dick
musiclineproduction 9 months ago
@musiclineproduction I don't think he is. to be honest, but he's got a LOT of TV under his belt, even before his own show he'd worked in the biz for a decade or so
MetallicBill 9 months ago
@MetallicBill well sure, he might.. but the way he is to his guest.. its just bad.. his monologue isnt that funny, especially when that bald guy in the background keeps repeating wat he says, and his top 10 list??? wat the hell is that.. ferguson is all natural
musiclineproduction 9 months ago
@musiclineproduction That Bald Guy, just happens to be legend. Ever see Spinal Tap?? SNL?? Wow, I just grew up on Letterman, all this since just jumps on a proven formula, Seeing Dave in recent weeks, I think his age is showing and he'll retire in a few years, I think he may have said as much, but you can see when he runs into some difficulty
MetallicBill 9 months ago
Reinforces why I stay clean and sober. Craig also had a cocaine problem and so did I. In August I'll have 4 yrs!

alcoholism is terrible...and I should know...I suffer from it. I've abused pretty much everything you can too, but it's the bottle that is the most harrowing...and it's legal. Isn't that a fucking trip?
BarstoolBlues33 9 months ago
@BarstoolBlues33 not to belittle what you have experienced, i dont mean to at all, but let me tell you, serious opiate addiction is far far worse than alchohol addiction. and by worse, i just mean more physically and mentally painful, im not tryig to say what alchoholics go through is easier or anything.

Ferguson is just pure class. I got all the respect in the world for the man for being able to take the high road.
