I never made it past Karnath's Lair, so this would be impossible for me to try. While Karnath's Lair doesnt look really hard, most of my lives are gone thanks to the ice cavern level.

you can skip eather 4th and 6th (almost. you will have to go through the first scene anyway) using the warp zones.

i dont get whats challenging about this level, is the player doing something to control the vehicle? to me it looks automated?

It's just a matter of good reflex. This coloured ball behind you goes much faster than you, so if you turn too early or too late, you'll probably lose a life... There is no checkpoint in the whole course, so you'll always start at the beginning of the stage.

Wow, n00b, it's not automated... you have to press the direction in which to go, which means, in every corner you have to press either right, left, up or down. If you don't (or if you do it slowly), the other wheel catches up to you and kills you.
