CBGB, Gone Astroland, Gone Yankee Stadium, Gone I wish I was born in the 70s back when people gave a shit about history and werent so stupid, it's embarrasing to admit that I belong to this worthless generation!
Long live NYHC!!!! Sunday Hardcore Matinee!!!!! Classic! Miss the ole skool!!!! My first matinee was in 85', snuck in, under age, got caught by Hilly but he let me stay!!!!! Bad Brains!!!!!!
I spent my formative years hanging out there - I'm so glad I did! The Dead Boys (Smoked a "j" with J. Zero~ heart throb....), Suicide, The Shirts, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Blondie. Got mugged going home one night. Passed out on the street one night - someone laced a joint with angel dust, fell in love for 5 minutes one night. Ah, sweet, wasted youth~
i think CBGB's final show did not represent what the place was all about.. to me CBGB's will always be about punk and hardcore... fuck patti smith and her bullshit music and fuck all those kids wearing CB's tees w/out even knowing what is
the spirit of CBGB's lives somewhere behind the barcodes of the Varvatos shop. Once a month the clothes are hidden and the stage emerges. Went to NYC for the first time recently searching for many things. Walked into Varvatos and found slivers of CBGB's. Got invited to return in the PM for the monthly show and free PBR. A NY band, the Dead Sparrows, were killing it. Then I took a cab to Brooklyn to see Ultramagnetic MC's at Southpaw. Dope shows. I got drunk.
I just bought a "Save CBGB" shirt on Grindstore's website, maybe everyone here could do the same. Probably won't get us anywhere, but it's worth a try.
they made a suit store out of it? id do one of two things buy it back and make it cbgb's again or burn it down and do some jimmy Hendrix shit with the flames. its blasphemy its like me taking the white house and turning it to a best of Hitler museum fools bloody fools.
ever since i was 15 i wanted to go their and now that dream is gone.i would have given my last red cent to back in time to when the ramones and all the cool bands were playing their even if just for one night
The guy who owned the building decided he wanted money. He jacked the rent and claimed he did it years ago. Now the place is just some stupid fashion store for rich a**'s.
Why the hell would they close this place?? It was always my dream to go see it. Now all I'll be able to see is the bathrooms. And I'll have to walk through some high-fucking-end designer menswear store to get there.
@PunkLobo Music was around since the beginning of wom/man kind. MTV didn't kill passion for music, MTV killed music on television. The M should be replaced with an "R" for reality.
In 2005, a dispute arose between CBGB and the Bowery Residents' Committee. The Committee billed Kristal $91,000 in back rent, while Kristal claimed he had not been informed of increases in his $19,000 monthly rent. After the lease expired, they reached an agreement for the club to remain for fourteen more months while Kristal dropped his legal battles and his attempts to get historic landmark status for the club. The rich can suck it! political scum that cater only to the rich took the last great place in manhattan for underground music out of nyc. i hate what this city has become. sad that we live in a world where money is the dominating factor. when greed takes control you lose the soul
i would first have to ask you how old you are.. then i would have to ask you if you are aware that patti smith was like the amy winehouse of the late 70's? you either loved her or you hated her.. but one thing for sure if that you couldnt ignore her and she influenced ALOT of music you are hearing today.
i have 33 years old, as you can see, i have some experience, if you think that patti was like amy winehouse of the 70, i have to say that is a totally bullshit, patti smith is not a singer, amy does, patti "sing" a kinda punk/early emo/rock, amy sing blues and jazz, so taking this pharameters, you Comparisons are out of place, so, my comment was just because i really think she's not a "great influence" like some people say, i believe there's better female singer in all ages.
Ask the UK punk bands where so-called "Punk" started. Ask ANYONE from the Pistols, Clash, Damned, Siouxie and the Banshees, etc where their inspiration came from. EVERY ONE OF THEM will tell you that it came from Iggy, The Velvets, the Dolls, etc. Case closed.
You're a clueless cunt. The UK punk scene started after Malcolm came to NYC and absorbed everything that was going on here, and then brought it back to London. London punk was a bore. It lacked the great originality of the US scene. Iggy, the Velvets, the Dolls, etc were American, NOT British.
carezzza...Any american with half a fucking brain would know where punk started at. I take it your not like the typical yank. You have less than half a fucking brain. Cheers Sunshine!!
I was a punk before there was a name for it. I was there. I worked with all of the original punk bands, long before there was a British punk scene. You read about it in a fucking magazine. The British punks all dressed and acted the same. There was nothing interesting about them. The people on the NY scene considered the UK scene a joke.
This conversation is now complete. Go sit in a gutter and pop your zits.
Too true... The Brits' punk i hve always believed to be too cloaked in uniformity! This ws because Maclaren ws a businessman who created the uniform of British punk to profit from his clothing store as well as ripping off bands! Even Johnny Lydon realised this, hence PIL was created to rid himself of the Sex Pistols/Maclaren and all their clones running around Britain at the time!
I myself loved The Ramones, Johnny Thunder, Modern Lovers, Television, Patti Smith, early Talking Heads and Blondie...that whole CBGB scene also added to the birth of punk! Of course, the Velvet's are the beginning of the 'sound', and as you've stated Iggy and the Stooges and N.Y Dolls were the forerunners as well!!! To borrow from an englishman, Mr Lydon...British punk ws 'NO FUN'...'NO FUN'!!
Thats how fucked up you Americans are. I wouldnt fuck the queen in her ass even with your dick.....too fucking ugly for me. NY DOLLS where a total failure....As far as mothers go your mum is here right now sucking my asshole
Get you facts straight!!... PUNK was born in New York, so as the word PUNK. Sex Pistols learn how to play with The Ramones first album, Malcom McLaren said that!!... I recommend Punk: Attitude by IFC, great documentary...
Its soo sad when u drive away in a cab at the end!! CBGBs will never be the same in Vegas! Too bad NY is too expensive to maintain the underground nature of the club.. God bless HILLY!
I was there.I played there back in the early 80's.I sat and had a beer with Debra Harry at that very same bar.I played pinball with Chris, the drummer from the talking heads. That's all I remember from that time. The rest is a blurr.
