unameitid- you are truly ignorant. This was louisiana, almost 100 degree heat, and even a 100 mile hike would not have been far enough. Being too poor to own a car should not have been a death sentence for thousands.

Doesn't the law of our land, the Constitution say that we are responsible for the general welfare of our country? I do not know about others, but I am for that. We will always have those who work the system. They do it to their own shame. But to have one bad apple spoil it for all those in need, that is wrong.

gee wiz, if my life was at risk and I didnt have a car I would hike out even if it was 30 miles. This guy looked healthy enough to walk out carring a baby.
I sure as hell would not wait around or have any faith our idiot filled government would save me.
The dictionary should define a fool as anybody who would bet their life the goverment will something critical well.

I hope one day you are not in such a situation and your words come back to haunt you. This same argument was used for the Jews in the holocaust, blame the poor who couldn't get out, it's just not nice.
