still i have to admit that challenging morgoth was the most brave and unwise act of his life ( both opossite to his normal characteristics) that eventually cost him his death leaving Noldor without their wise king....
Feanor and Fingolfin were the mightiest of the Elves of Arda. Feanor's spirit was so strong, his very life consumed his own mother soon after he was born. Fingolfin his half-brother had that same fiery spirit though unlike his brother he was perhaps purer of heart and wasn't a leader of corruption, though he did follow towards it, and was a willing, if unwitting, purveyor of the Curse of Mandos that Feanor caused upon the world. It was this, more than anything, that enraged him to Angband.
I'm a fan of Tolkien's history. For me, it is the best movie about elves which I've ever seen. Sometimes in my dreams I try to imagine how it was... It is beautiful. Thank you for this story.
Fantastic video. I've been watching it every now and then for a year and a half already and it moves me every time. Fingolfin is my second favourite character only after Turin. Good job. Love the music too. What's the name of the piece?
Yeah, Turin was pretty badass. I love the theme of 'how the mighty have fallen due to their pride' in Tolkien's works. But Fingolfin somehow just stands out.

Of all the stories in the Silmarillian the tragedy of Feanor is the story that would make the best film, IMHO. I would say that the weakness in the story is that there is no strong female character, although Galadriel is a potentially strong character whose motivations are not clearly defined, only suggested, by the story.
Agreed on the book making an excellent film, although it would have to be in several parts because of the time it spans. Melian could make a strong female character.
Yes, Tolkien did describe Hurin as the greatest warrior of the Edain and all other men. However, I always took the context of that to mean "all men at his time" since Turin's prime came later and wouldn't have been considered in that comparison. I personally see Turin as greater due to his misfortunes and slaying of Glaurung but one could certainly make a case for Hurin too :)
@LimesNorrlandicus no he wasnt tolkien him self said that by the hand of turin morgoth would die on the last battle some thing which no one else could do hurin was still a class fighter
ensnared in the terrible Curse of Mandos by the horrible Oath of Faenor,Fingolfin was amid the most enormous defeats of elves middle earth has ever endured."Then Fingolfin beheld(as it seemed to him) the utter ruin of the Noldor, and the defeat behond redress of all thier houses;and filled with wrath and despair he mounted upon Rochallor his great horse and rode forth alone, and none might restrain him.He passed over Dor-nu-Fuin like a wind amind the dust,..."
"and laid it upon his sons to hold thier oath, and avenge their father. Then he died;but he had niether burial nor tomb, for so fiery was his spirit that as it sped his body fell to ash,and was borne away like smoke;and his likeness was never agin apeared in arda, niether has his spirit left the halls of Mandos. Thus ended the mightiest of the Noldor,of whos deeds came their most greatest renoun and thier most grievous of woe."THAT was the mightiest of the Noldor F-1349And then there was Fingolfin...
"Tere upon the confines of Dor Deadeloth, the land of morgoth,Feanor was surrounded, with few friends about him.Long he fought on,and undismayed, though he was wrapped in fireand wounded with many wounds; But at the last he was smitten to the ground by Gothmog,Lord of balrogs. ...""there he would have been slain,if not his sons in that moment come up with force to his aid,and the balrogs left him,and departed to angband.""But he cursed the name of Morgoth thrice,..."
"For Feanor,in his wrath against the enemy, would not halt, but pressed on behind the reamnant of the orcs, thinking so to come at Morgoth himself; And he laughed aloud as he wielded his sword, rejoicing that he had dared the wrath of the valor and the evils of the road, that he might see the hour of his vengance."..."Thus it was that he drew far upon the van of his host;and seeing this, the servants of Morgoth turned to bay,and there issued from angband Balrogs to aid them. ..."
The fact is that Fingolfin(as did every other being in middle-earth and heaven(save Manwe himself)feared feanor and dared not to contest him in any way.And his will was so strong that the hearts of the dwellers of heaven swore a oath so terrible and so bound of it thereof, that it would spell ruin of all their house, and even then they betrayed their immortal lives of bliss for doom and tragity. Thus Fingolfin followed Feanor into the doom of mandos with small choice and was slain thereby.lamentON
The fact is that you are giving too much credit to Feanor. Melkor was the only Vala to ever know fear. And Fingolfin followed Feanor because of the oath he swore as he stood before Manwe: "Half-brother in blood, full brother in heart will I be. Thou shalt lead and I will follow. May no new grief divide us." This was how the two had made up, because Fingolfin DID contest Feanor by speaking against him to Finwe and Finarfin. Fingolfin followed so as not to break his oath. The only "terrible oath"
sworn was by Feanor and his seven sons, who swore their oath out of love and devotion to their father, not fear. And those who did leave Valinor for the Hither Lands did so not out of fear, but because the words Feanor spoke before setting out had moved them, and it was what they then wanted. And most of them paid no mind to Feanor's claim of kingship over the Noldor, they followed Fingolfin as king instead. Fingolfin did not fear Feanor; if he feared anything, it was -for- his brother, and
You are entirely right. As much of a Feanorian as I am at heart, Usmcspartan does give him too much credit. I wonder if he has anything to do with spreading that rumor about the Valar fearing the Numenorians...
Fingolfin was not behond all of the noldor, for the spirit of fire was the greatest of all the noldor... and all elves of that time,of when he lived-Feanor of the house of Finwe, son of Miriel!Allthough Fingolfin was most noble and steadfast he was not greater than Curufinwe."For Feanor was made mightiest in all parts of body and mind:in valour,in endurance,in beauty,in understanding,in skill,in strength and subtlety alike:of all the children of Illuvitar ,and a bright flame was in him"
I think that what Tolkien implied was that Feanor was the greatest of mind and creativity, the body etc. but he chose to concentrate mainly in the creative arts and too such an extent that he was weakened in other areas (Much as is exampled in Melkor/ Sauron). After all his skill even surpassed the Maier which is no mean achievement. Without doubt he was mighty but in physical combat Fingolfin was the greater it is one of the few absolute definites that Tolkien stated.
I love this thanks so much for taking the time to put it together. Fingolfin was always my favorite char from the Silmarillion and I give honor to his name in my own way. Like naming my main char in rpg's after him. Anyway this was awesome TY
Fingolfin's march on Angband and his fight against Morgoth is one of my favorite scenes in the Silmarillion. It gets me choked up sometimes when I read it. Talk about having balls!
If you remember Morgoth was bound to one shape. That one shape can be harmed by man or elf. Sauron was also bound to one shape. He was wounder by a man. Sauron is just the same as Melkor only with less power. One is an Ainur the other a Maia which means a lesser god.
