We buried my Mom this past year. I sang a very upbeat hymn she had requested, Lord of the Dance and everyone, Dad included said it was the most peaceful funeral he'd ever attended. However, my tears stayed unshed until tonight. Thank you for posting healing, haunting, beautiful version. I was thinking of another version to share with one of my boys and this one caught me off guard. We'll see you again Mom and we can sing together again.
We played this haunting but finally free song at my mommas wake. It brought solace, because she was in pain no longer, and she was FINALLY FREE of all of this constant struggle and dispair. I miss her company, her laughter, her beautiful smile; but I am glad that she nor my daddy(they passed within 4 months of each other) are no longer suffering from horribly cruel diseases. We WILL see them again. so no, the circle has NOT been broken. Love you Mom & Dad
@Master100Mind 'tis a game long awaited thats coming out soon and this song was used in one of the trailers, you can check youtube via "vga 2001:bioshock infinite exclusive trailer" cheers
@bigstitz It is on itunes under Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Will the Circle be Unbroken $1.29 best version is the May 1989(which is this version) Good Luck!
I'm curious, is that Dan Akroyd at about 4:01 in the video? It sure looks like him, and there's nothing wrong with adding some "blues" to the song. :-)
@helo821ab Hi Airborne ~ no, at 04:01 I see June Carter Cash (Mother Maybelle's little girl and Johnny's darling wife), with someone behind her who looks a little like Dan, but it's not him. You can stop-frame for a better look by pressing the "Captain's bars" at the lower-left of the window frame.
Thanks so much for posting this! I was raised in the South as Southern Baptist, and it was a Requirement, To Know this Song! not really, but we all sang it a lot~!Still means a Lot to me~! Great Video all those Special Souls singing! God Bless~!!♥Donny
I "lost" my mother in May of this year. When I first found out about her passing this was the first song that came to mind. I love this song It gave me some peace and a sense of calm knowing my mother was going to a better place.
Thanks for posting.
I know she is not really lost that she is in a better place..Miss you mom.
If you still have your Mama with you...call and visit her as much as possible and let her know you love her. I sure wish I could!!! I love you Mama!!!
A September Sunday of last year. I had just come off a terrible binge of cocaine. My girlfriend was with me through the whole year as I went through the hell of withdrawal. She asked me to go with her to Second Baptist that Sunday morning. I was scared that I'd be judged. We got out of her car, walked hand in hand up those steps as the congregation sang, "Will the Circle be unbroken." Rev. Phelps breached on the son whom the Father welcomed home. Praise Jesus, the sun came out that day.
it saddens that they felt it was necessary to put Roy Acuff's name on the screen. He's the godfather and nobody knows who he is. Or RIcky Skaggs or any of the others named here. But in a way I'm glad it was done. Let's the younger generations know who to thank for singing and making great music...very unlike what we have to listen to today.
Please update this video, I'm going home to my family reunion this weekend, my grandparents raised me and my grandmother will turn 90 years in a couple of days. I'm very selfish and not quite ready to let this great lady go yet. But when the Lord does decide to call her home. I would love to post this video and it would dishearten me greatly to not be able to find it. Thank You
This is my daddys favorite song, He printed out the lyricks and now always sings it going around the house :)) He wants it as his funeral song :'). Its such a beautiful song with some of the greatest country singers that lived.
For all my family and friends.............who hold up the circle despite despair and depression. Hold up those memories of those of us who have passed. God Bless you all.
@MrThejohnny08 Thank you...I saw Bob Dylan last night in person. My husband loved him and my daddy played some of his music in a bluegrass group. I went in honor of them. He sang Girl from the North Country, which I hadn't heard him sing since he sang it with Johnny Cash. I know they were both there with me.

i remember growing up my grandma had prayer meetings and would sing hymns would end with this one with just a keyboard and this was one of the songs they would sing to remember those who were gone... R.I.P. Grandma Mabel and my brother William...
I lost my Mama four years ago today 2-17-07. It still hurts as much today as it did then. Time has a way of healing the hurt making it easier to deal with but not the missing her part. I miss her more than ever. My greiving has been done alone as I had to be the strong one for everyone else. "If you still have your Mama with you...call her as much as possible and let her know you love her. I sure wish I could!!! I love you Mama!!!
@MsSlkelley i love this comment because it is so true!!!.. my mother is getting up in age and i make sure and call her at least twice a week just to visit... i always said you only have one mother in this world so appreciate her as much as you can because you will miss her when shes gone!!....
My mother died in May 2009--she was my best friend and for months I could still smell the food she used to cook and I could hear her voice. I expected to see her sitting playing her PS2 when I would come home for lunch. Even now I find myself tearing up. I love and miss her so much. All I have now are the memories. There are things I cannot do now--because we used to do them together. I miss her so much.
Thank you Father, Thank you Lord, Thank you Jesus! I WILL see them on the other side. Thumbs up my brother Bill ( & Momma & Daddy + many others that have crossed over) I'll see you on the other side!!! To quote another old hymn..."I've got a Mansion just over the Hilltop" OR Blessed Assurance Jesus is Mine!!!
This was one amazing album. If you don't have it, get it. So many great standout performances, like Levon Helm, Ricky Skaggs, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Hornsby, and of course the NGDB.
Now THIS is Bluegrass at its best !
