The Emory character represents so much what I dislike in certain gay men- the mincing, effeminate, unreliable, selfish, attention-hungry, self-hating, untrustworthy, criminal, nut job. That stereotype needs to pass away! Whenever I run into a character like that at a party I go the other way.
@thrashdouche21 Oh Sweetie, Gays had it so hard in the 1970's. They lost their jobs, homes, custody of their Children. Jane Alexander & Geena Rowlands did a Movie about a Lesbian Mother who lost custody of her kids. The late Fashion Designer Halston had a SOB Boyfriend named "Victor Hugo", and he tried to dump him and when he tried, Victor threatened to "Out" him. Also, look at Calvin Klein, he finally came out, had a Twenty Year Old Boy Toy but kept his sexuality a secret for a long time.
@laminage wow, thanks for the info , i imagined the 70s as freewheling and fun and people doing what they wanted(i guess not for gays)and assumed the aids epidemic was the cause of most of homophobia, but we have come along way
@thrashdouche21 People knew how to have fun but when AIDS came along, so many amazing people died. I remember how shocked I was when I found out that the late Robert Reed (Mike Brady) The Brady Bunch was gay. Oh here's a fun fact, when you see Donald talking about his Analyst, Chester Weinberg The Mentor Of Calvin Klein went for therapy to "cure" himself but he realized that it was okay to be gay. Sadly enough, he died in 1985, shortly after Rock Hudson did.
@modelsillustrated Did you know that whenever he was in public with his Wife, people would admonish him for "Lying." He and his wife took in Robert La Torneaux (Cowboy), when he was diagnosed with AIDS.
@modelsillustrated Yeah, look at Gale Harold (Ex-Brian Kinney Queer As Folk), or Heath Ledger or Jake Gyllenhall in Brokeback Mountain. Another great convincing characters are Jessica Leccia, Crystal Chappel, and Nadia Bjorlin from The Webseries Venice.
It's amazing....This was released in 1970 yet the stage play was written in the late to mid 1960's so what we are seeing regarding the language Pre-Stonewall
La Dolce Vita, Has a Gay Scene, With straights, That everyone is playing similar game like in this film, That was in 59, I think what set this Film/play to be released was a Film Called "The Detectives" with Frank Sinatra. So, This IMHO, Maybe be the aftermath of that film, But, With a more positive tone to the Situation, of that time of being gay. It's a Dark Comedy. but, Like I said , this is only my Humble Opinion. I'm not an expert, I thought it was a great film when it came out. btw, imstrgt

I watched my cousin live this miserable lifestyle and go from a young lonely man to an old lonely man. Yeah I know your all in long term mutually nurturing loving relationships . What's that in your fucked up world 3 months ? His acquaintances are all a bunch of lonely old bitchy queens that spend there days engaged in Remember when conversations.
What was the first American film to use the word fuck? Nothing against it, I just find it really cool they're saying it in a film from 1969. I lawyas assumed it wasn't until well into the 70's they were allowing the language we all normally use.
@ksb78 You should watch the IFC documentary Indie Sex. It's available streaming on Netflix. There's a good segment on Censorship that goes through the whole time line of acceptability.
@ksb78 if this movie wasn't the first, it must have definitely been ONE OF the first. Consider that that the film version of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" from 1966 (less than four years before "Boys in the Band"), while the screenplay was a nearly verbatim recreation of Albee's original play, nearly all of the dozen or so profane words used in the play had to be substituted in the film to satisfy the censors. They came a long way in four years, in terms of language!
@Soapking1965 Yes, I thought I was the only one who noticed that. Now that you mention it "AMC" has always been a Gay Friendly Town and in 2003 it had the first Same Sex Kiss between two women. Hard to believe that it's cancelled.
And these type of emotional train wrecks want to adopt our Children ! The Children they cannot create with there completely normal and natural lifestyle.
I've always wanted to know what became of the actors in this film...and then I didn't want to know, for the sake of the film. Does any of the above make sense?
ive always said they should have used this film in psychology class to studt group dynamics.does anyone else agree.i havent found many people who want to chat about this film.
I always thought Keith Prentice was the cutest of the actors, and Larry was my third favourite character (after Michael and Emory): the gay lothario with a heart of gold. He reminded me of an old boyfriend who I haven't seen in years, but who I still love. :-(
Keith Prentice was very, very, very, handsome in fact soooo handsome he was the model on the Sanka coffee label for many years! That profile as a young boy really turned me on! And he was GAY... WOW!
4:28 - 4:49 ironically made me take pause to actually entertain the idea that Cliff Gorman, who plays Emory, may have very well been straight in real life as has been documented because no one with a penis and a healthy pair of balls could possibly be that gay. LOL. That had to be acting.
Gorman was also apparently very kind. Many sources document the tough life the actor who played "Cowboy", had in the years after the film, leading to his eventual incarceration, drug habit and infection with HIV. Gorman and his wife reportedly took care of him during the final years of his llfe.
Oh if you want to see an Old School Clip type in Guiding Light/Secret Storm promos. Larry Luckinbill was on The Secret Storm. Also, William Christian (Ex-Derek Frye) from All My Children played Bernard in an Off Broadway Production.
As hysterical as the lines are, you also realize how smart and eclectic you have to be to truly appreciate this play: Ayn Rand, Tennessee Williams, Maria Montez, Vera Hruba Ralston. Wow!
The Emory character represents so much what I dislike in certain gay men- the mincing, effeminate, unreliable, selfish, attention-hungry, self-hating, untrustworthy, criminal, nut job. That stereotype needs to pass away! Whenever I run into a character like that at a party I go the other way.
