Thank you Bobby Orr - for bringing your innovation in skating and play to hockey. Prior to you, the film might be color but the play was black & white.
@thecuckookid Both Hall and Plante were better than Sawchuk. Sawchuk was terrific, the best for 5 years between 50 and 55, but after that Hall and Plante were better statisticslly, more consistent, more award-winning than Sawchuk who was over-rated because of his untimely death. And it wasn't even close.
This was the year that Montreal took away Detroit's crown as greatest team of the 50s as they would win for 5 years in a row. That was the original Stanley Cup (Today they use a replica), you'll notice that the "bands" are much rounder and that the top was detachable from the base!
(in 1970-71, Montreal would be the first team to win the "new" cup.
I really enjoyed watching that, especially in colour. Back then the T.V coverage would have been in black & White. It was a magical time hockey and if you were a Habs fan this was the first of five consecutive cups a record that may be very hard to break. Thanks for showing the film footage, would love to see more.
The quicker the Red Wings get relocated to the Eastern Confernce, the better the NHL will be. Detroit and Montreal have always had a great deal of respect towards each others teams and also between fans. Chicago with their "Detroit Sucks" chants can be the only Original Six left in the West. Those Blackhawk don't show any "Orignal Six" class whatsoever
I agree, and don't forget about Toronto, even though the Leafs have stunk these last few years, Toronto and Detroit have had some great games over the years.
Yes they did! I was a big Toronto fan in the 70's pulling hard for the "pyramid power' Leafs when they went up against the Flyers in the 1976 playoffs and the again the following year. The Wings and Leafs had some great battles in the 80's and early 90's.
They were good years, but the years during the 1940's, 50's & 60's (Toronto's Bob Baun broken leg goal to win the cup vs the Red Wings in 64) But the N.H.L. would be wise to shift the Red Wings back to the Eastern Conference.
I guess those were great years, but I didn't start watching HNIC and the local Wings games until the 1967-68 season. From then until Yzerman arrived the Wings only made the playoffs twice, so I would pull for the Leafs and then the Islanders in the early 80's.
Amazing, truly Amazing rinkside film. Detroit goalie is rookie Glenn Hall, Jacques Plante for Montreal. Many views of big number 9 Gordie Howe and number 2 for Montreal Doug Harvey. This is a treasure. Toe Blake's first cup as coach. The Stanley Cup was not yet one piece and can be seen being separated by Plante. I love this.!!!!
Awesome video though

why is there color though
turtoise87 10 months ago
@turtoise87
Why not? Kodachrome was commercially viable in 1935 and Eastmancolor was economical in 1950.
