Moral ambiguity. Intentional or not, Avatar is a good metaphor for the failures of government and why anti-statism is the only philosophical answer. I liked the movie.
Calling "Avatar" a metaphor for native americans is like saying that the "Aliens" movies are a metaphor that we should shoot breeders because overpopulation will kill us.
So the "story" you spoke of is one written in body language, because the dialog was barely present. Because that move was in essence just a visual work of art, and it ceases to impress after that.
@dukee155 I'll translate that for you, we are buying their oil so they can survive there. If we weren't buying their oil their economy would be tanked.
But, if John Cameron were honest, and wanted to draw realistic parellels between the Navi and Native Americans, he would've also portrayed them as engaging in widespread human sacrifices, ritual torture, pedestry, slavery and bloody, devastating warfare between tribes.
What I got from the movie is that James Cameron wants us to worship more trees, and kill more Marines.
Industrial nation? More like what every nation was at the time: Imperialist. B/c we didn't have to sail across oceans to find land that wasn't already "settled" (used loosely), we came up with Manifest Destiny.
Do you remember what President was responsible for most of the Indian killing? That's right, the architect and shaper of the modern democratic party. He loved slavery and promoted Indian removal. Should I now think all on the left are awful; the way you think about the right?
"History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake" - James Joyce. Why do you feel it necessary to defend history? Imperialism was part and parcel of capitalism of the day. That imperialism lives on in the pursuit of oil.
Wow, you were able to find a quote that says history is awful. History is history and you cannot judge history by the standards of today, but rather try and steer the future by them.
Imperialism and capitalism can be mutually exclusive. China isn't taking over the US by selling more cars than it now.
@j0hnwi11iams Even then, are you aware Native Americans butchered women and children on the frontier? It wasn't merely colonial propaganda. Many native tribes had no qualms about killing women and children, it wasn't considered immoral like it was in many other cultures.
of course it was supposed to be about native americans. It's another pseudo-progressive white guilt movie.
White guy is part of group devestating natives. decides to join natives and become race traitor. Only he instantly becomes their leader, and so gets to play an egalitarian without ever losing his white privilege.
I was amazed when I first heard that conservatives had actually ready-made theories of history that portray Native Americans as uncivilized, illiterate wild men, only saved from extinction and only got a life worth living by the white man's technologies and skills. This is one of the most ridiculous pieces of the puzzles of an objectivist and conservative libertarian worldview.
Though, and here is the self-congratulatory part, you'll notice that the natives win because of a Christ-like figure who is imported from our species. As amazing as they are, they can't beat us without someone from our side helping them.
But you're right about the film, it IS glorious. People who say it's a waste of money aren't seeing where it's gone, it is all on the screen.
I wish he'd done a bit more with bio-connectedness of the planet, the computer metaphor Grace used fascinated me.
BTW - Wonderful to see Sigourney Weaver chewing some scenery in a role worthy of her. I wish more Hollywood scribes had pens that could test this fierce actress' talents.
I think you fail to see the point of why they need someone of our species. He knew how the humans worked. He knew how they fought. What better way to fight against a nearly unkown army than have someone from that army on your side?
Not directly. His style now, if you're not uber popular, is to kind of make a reply to a strawman representation of your video and accuse an ambiguous collective of oppressing him.

They were very much like Native Americans?
Did they also cannibalize each other & have massive slavery & mass sacrifices?

@agent4844 Are we really buying it or are we stealing it. Also why did we invade Iraq if we could have bought the oil.

China is getting funded by unethical investors who know China can always have the cheapest labor.
j0hnwi11iams 2 years ago
China is funded by $940 billion bought from guess where. Their economy is No.1 and the US no. 190 (roughly -$700 Billion) on the CIA Factbook.

I thought the religious part of the movie could make feel uncomfortable to those who critize religion....

@roberto8ag grammar fail, but tbf there's actually proof of the spiritual bond or 'religion' in the film, unlike real religion.

"grammar fail"
English is my second language. If you don't tell me its going to be difficult to find it.
"...there's actually proof of the spiritual bond or 'religion' in the film, unlike real religion."
Religion comes from the latin religare = to bind.
So what you call "real" religion could actually by fake religion?
What about native americans' religion.... what they practiced was spiritual bond (religion) or real religion?

@J0hnWi11iams, don't quit your day job to become a movie reviewer.
I haven't seen Avatar yet, but thanks for broadcasting the ending at 1:01 and 2:28.
Which movie are you planning to see next? Please hold off seing that movie until I see it first and let you know how it ends.

I suppose I should have said Spoiler Alert.

@J0hnWi11iams, "I suppose" you should let us know which movie you plan to see say late next month. Fair is fair.
Do you think the ending was a good one?
Sounds like a feel good, Disney type, a la "Return of the Jedi" Ewok bear celebration type finale. Yuck.
Better to have had the Nav'i lose?
Bet Cameron hinted that the humans would return in force in the future. For the sequel.
