  • Dinah could do no wrong to any song she sang!

  • Stunning song, stunning lyrics, stunning voice, stunning performance. Just...stunning really.

  • What a voice! Sharp powerful and unique.

  • For anybody interested, I have been assured that the opening and closing passages on trombone are by Billy Byers.

  • Great song and performance. The backing orchestra was directed by Walter Rodell, but does anyone know who the trombonist is at the beginning and end? All discographies state "unknown" but the style sounds familiar.

  • Agreed, The best version.

  • Wonderful version - the best by a mile!

  • i think she was much better than billy holliday.

  • Beautiful, just beautiful.

Well done and thank you for posting this.

  • Best version in my opinion! :)

  • sure, but i thought this is shirley bassey..

  • I'm Mad About the Boy...all of them. All sizes and shapes, young and old, all of them who tormented me when I didn't even understand these lyrics; movie stars, cowboys and dangerous types I dared not look at too long but I knew I would find him and Lord knows I'm not a fool but I have loved each and every longing moment this beautiful voice gave birth to these feelings...thank you and allowing me such misery and joy...

  • love this one <3

  • Excellent !!!!

  • JUST GREAT!!

  • Good proper music! These days are gone!

  • real music !

  • wow, where did those home movies of her come from?

  • Extraordinary lyrics! They don't write them like this anymore. But then Noel Coward was one of a kind

  • love her, and love this song

  • interesting-I thought it was a white woman who sung this! not that it makes any difference.

  • i am mad about the boy....uuuuuuu

  • Comment removed

  • iam mad about the boy! h

  • She died too young.

  • great song!

  • This was my moms favorite singer. and she played her records all the time. now I understand. this lady could realy sing. I love video.

  • I dedicate this song to ADAM LAMBERT. I'm soooo made about that boy!

    Sudsy

  • what a voice

im also mad about a boy and he doesnt even care bout me

    :(

dinah helps me getting over it

  • I totally understand that.

  • This lovely song was composed by Noel Coward.

  • Dinah i love you

  • Wonderful!

  • i'm mad about a boy who build a huge thick wall around his life in order to prevent me out...pathetic, so pathetic of me

  • i do not care who was the boy in this song. i am singing the same words to my boy, and he is a boy!!!!!!!

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • Dinah Washington had such a poignant voice that could bring tears to my eyes.

Didn't Billie Holiday sing this song also?

    Thanks for sharing it.

    Iris AKA Feisty Mom

  • Billie never sang that song. Too bad ,I wish she did

  • Thanks for your expertise. It would have been a great song for her. I used to love and listen to Dinah Washington and Brook Benton.

    Iris "AKA" Feisty Mom

  • uh that is not dinah in the green dress, thats one of Joe Louis' ex-wives..

  • Of course thats Dinah. Her weight flucuated over a period of time. Thats what did Her in, diet pills and alcohol, .

  • I know Dinah when I see her...that's def not her

  • Nope i'm with you - that isn't her.

  • You're right that isnt Dinah in the green dress.

  • please someone...post 'baby, did you hear?' it's fantastic and her voice is great in this song.....it's such a pity that this song does not exist in youtube.....???......

  • Noel Coward probably did write this song about a boy(man). Somepeople think it was Cary Grant but probably the Duke of Kent one of the King of Englands brothers.

  • this is gossip, no?

  • Dinah, you are a QUEEN! And is sorely missed. I will always love you, my Sistah !

  • FANTASTICA!

  • absolutely magnificent!Thank you for posting :)

  • For anyone interested in listening to a superb rendering of Dinah Washington's "Drinkin Again," go to iTunes and download Tasha Thomas' version. It's one of the most innovative takes of this song I've ever heard. Great session players, too.

  • no its not.

  • I think you don't even know who D.W is don't you?....this is DINA VOICE

    UNMISTAKABLE VOICE

  • no, Nancy is similar and has phrasing like Dinah, but this is original Dinah Washington...I love Nancy too...

  • Dinah is terrific! But if you can find a guy singing it.......well it works well too ,wonder why? Cole porter was the man to write about such shocking things all those decades ago!!

DeLovely is one hell of a movie. Brilliant? Yes.

  • Noel Coward wrote this song.

  • I L-O-V-E it. Thank you Dinah.

  • Dinah Washington ! My God Just listen to that vocal instrument she possesses. It's a precious tool that she wields with the authority of a Queen. She could read the telephone book and make it sound like a stone groove. Even Bird (Charlie Parker) thou she was a gas and partied with her (to excess) on numerouis occasions. In fact the night before Bird was thrown out of Birdland and swallowed a vial of iodine, he had spent the evening imbibing with Dinah, leaving them unable to work, drunk.

  • her pacing and interpetation are the equal of only the greatest...ray charles, frank sinatra...what an original

  • She is sooo great.. You can't compare to singers nowadays. Amy Winehouse can sing like this, when she sober. She sings comparable to Dinah at the winter warmer. But still she isn't as good as Dinah Washington in this vid! She's amazing!

  • One of the most unique voice ever...always imitated never duplicated...

  • and Dinah Washington made her name as a rhythm and blues singer at first...what "r&b" singer of today can even TRY to sing jazz like Dinah could?...maybe Jill Scott?...maybe Ledisi? (who doesn't get her due)...they don't make singers like Dihan anymore

  • When it comes to song interpretation, their are few that match the incomparable Dinah Washington. It's almost as if she was singing and talking to you, and only you, all at once. Just pure magic.

  • Pardon the tactlessness, but this is the first time I wished I was something besides Asian. x) This woman's amazing.

  • Ms. Washington never disappoints!! 5*****Great interpretation from 1962

  • so sensual...........

  • She has the voice of an angel.

  • one of the great "voice" ever!

This odd diversity of misery and joy

I'm feeling quite insane and young again

And all because I'm mad about the boy.....:)

  • This woman is a legend! I love her music. It gives me chills. She sings with her heart & soul... How music should be sung.

  • I agree Chanel..singer nowdays are only "packaging"...they sung just to make money

  • I was a toddler when Dinah died, but according to my Dad she was the greatest singer of all time. I know every song, thanks to my Dad, he 80 years old and thanks to you and other Dinah fans on youtube, I was able to sit my laptop on his bed and play videos like this for him. You gave and old man great pleasure and

    his daughter too. thanks

  • This is one of the few videos left of Dinah so a lot of people who watch must be very grateful as am i

    I

  • Dear People who made this video possible I truly appreciate you posting. I loved Dinah and the wit of Noel Coward.

  • She is a breathtaking talent! Just amazing. BTW, there is a video of Amy Winehouse talking about how much she adores Dinah Washington.

  • fantastic song. Thanks for sharing the video.

  • I admire this woman.

Wish I was born 80 years earlier.

  • I perfectly know what you mean...I do totally agree with you

  • UAU!

  • excellence in jazz music!!

  • she sings the Double Tree commercial song "Relax Max".such an amazing talent!

  • I'd tap that.

  • First class ... pure excellence.

More splendid jazz at my blog (link in profile). Feel free to check it out.

    Thx and All best,

    Bruno

  • hard to decide betweem ella fitzgerald and dinah washington bot great great singers

  • what's to decide?

You can legally listen to both of them anytime you wish.. LOL

  • Like comparing oranges and apples...but most of know that they both taste mighty fine! 8^)

  • YEAH - That's a song and a half, so cool, she could really belt out those notes. I love it.....

  • xcellent singer and song.

TYVM for the up, 5 stars.

  • The best ever, it still gives me goose bumps when ever I hear her sing, but especially Mad about the boy !!!!!

  • just wow

  • OK this and Esther Ofarim are the best singing this song, check Esther out you will love it she sings it in London and I feel its a bit better than even this and I love Dinah

  • my heart is from sugar now. OH MAN OH MAN

  • Screw you c**ts, got my vid removed for using this song. dont u tossers realise, with 250,000 views it was getting the song OUT THERE!!?? why don'y you get the f**k off youtube if you don't like how it works???

  • Stupenda! Adoro Dinah e questo brano in particolare...

  • She was fantastic!

  • maravillosa...

  • really amazing she´s incredible, a perfect strong voice

  • Seven marriages and who knows how many affairs... mad about the boy indeed.

  • Yes indeed mad about the boy, she knew first hand and could sing it with heart soul with more passion than most people comprehend.....

  • impresionante figura impresionante musica

todo deja de ser algo desagradable cuando dina canta

todo fluye a su alrededor...es fantaastica

  • tienes razon, todo parece una locura, lo importante es tu y la cancion, dinah y su voz. gracias dinah...

  • Nothing around today sings like this!

  • Never heard this but instantly recognized Dinah... I really like this one definitely got into it

  • I love refering back to her. Not a big hit, but i like it, chick.

  • One of your favorite artists I see. Sent me many of your favorites.... Ooo! That reminds me of another artist you like that I must send!

  • That voice of hers is like chocolate, smooth, dark, rich, velvety and delightful. Thanks for the memories Dinah. Thanks to the universalmusicgroup for posting.

  • Great woman!

  • and im mad about DINAH SOULFUL MEANINGFUL SIMPLY WONDERFUL.!!!!!!!!!! SING GIRL SING.

  • Best ever voice and best ever singer..nasty!

  • They don't make them like this anymore!

  • You are so right. I've never heard this one by her. But, they REALLY don't make em like this anymore. What a shame.

  • This is such a great song, and (at 0.51) she's got the most beautiful eyes!

  • sorry I like her singing better than billie holiday but both were great performers

  • I always liked her voice. I also love Aretha Franklin's tribute to Dinah Washington. If you do not have - please purchase it.

  • This song is atimeless classic

  • its to bad the past is behind us ....no matter what any people say about how the world was many years ago ...it is really to bad that the children of todays world .. will never .. ever get to see how it was ..

They are missing out ... big time.

  • I'm mad about the girl too, but she's not mad about me

  • I'm mad about the boy too, but he's not mad about me :(

  • it's ok...he's doesnt know wat he's missin!! :)

  • Thanks, nice vids you have a really good voice and your sweet cheers xx

  • A magic song, written for a man by.. a man (Noel Coward)..Her best of on Mercury (from vol. 3 to vol.7) are WORTH BUYING......Lots of terrific songs, unbelievable melodies..

She was, is & still be the QUEEN...

  • Beautiful collage. So nice to see footage as well as still images. And one of my favorite Dinah Washington (and Noel Coward) songs. Bravo!

  • diction and pitch is incomparable

  • Una canción legendaria, preciosa.

  • Happy belated 84th birthday Dinah Washington!

  • WHAT A SOUND!!! They do not make them like this any more!! Thanks for the good quality upload.

  • This song only really made sense to me when I found it was written by a man.

  • I think she's got the best voice ever. I can't quite get into Ella's scat or Billie's voice metre. (No offense) & Nancy Wislon confuses me when I catch her, BY MISTAKE, on my Sirius. hmmmm

  • Amy Winehouse got inspiration of many great divas. Anyway (Amyway), Amy has an unique voice and she is already a legend. Maybe the best singer in her genre.

  • I've always heard Dinah Washington in Amy's voice, probably more than any previous singer. They are not the same at all, but I bet Amy would admit to copping some of Dinah's inflections!

  • do you mean amy whitehouse or winehouse?

  • who cares about who copys who ??.. If you do the song better than the person you heard do it ... so what ....and you will prob. say Dinah stole "Sept. in The Rain".. or "Unforgetable" ...do you think Nat King Cole sang it better .. Hell No he didnt ..and this crap about ELVIS stealing songs from Blacks....was he supposed to take money to the writters .. how the hell did he know who got paid ...Dinah was the very best ...and yes .. she died with a needle in her arm.

  • I don't care about black and white issues -just blimey get a long as human beings!

    Yeah! i said it

  • She did NOT die with a needle in her arm! It was diet pills mixed with some alcohol. An accident took away this great talent.

  • What a fantastic voice and what a range! She has such character in her voice and sings with a beautiful quality that's all her own. What a tragedy that she died so young.

  • Sencillamente fantástica, lo mejor de lo mejor.

  • there is no one that even stands close to this voice of the great Ms Washington.

  • Someone should make a movie about this beautiful woman!!!

  • WHY THE BIGGEST DIE TRAGICALLY?!!!

  • This is sophisticated black music,Amy is only 10% of dinah, also there are many black/mulatto

woman singers from1920s up to present day, that are better than Amy,white people always say there version is better, like elvis who stole songs off blacks,it is obvious amy whitehouse is nowhere near Dinahs standard in class as well as voice, this was an era when black america was great before crack and gun violence harlem was the place to be even for white people. Great era.

  • agree with u there lol but id call it the dynamic 6 and put in nina simone and bessie smith too! I always have a different fav depending what mood im in lol! yeah i cant really think of any artists 2day that i can really see on the same level. its sad really

  • You Cant Beat The Dinamic Four Billy, Sarah, Dinah, Ella... I dont Care who or What R&B Singer Come Out of the Wood Works You Could never Compare or Beat These Lady's In a Million Years.. Not Only Great But a Class Act.. In its Own.. Hal Mooney Did Great Arrangements

  • Similar to a James Bond song

  • i don't know why everyone is comparing her to amy but i think dinah is wicked and amy is fantastic aswell.. she's in a bad state now but amy was up there. If Amy was the original then everyone would say she was better but Dinah is 40 yrs before her time & is the original ..

  • Amy herself said she likes Dinah, therefore she has copied her some.

  • i dont mind Amy Winehouse, she has an good voice and a great style but i hate it when people make out that she is better than she is. I have actually heard people say she is the best female singer of all time. Im sorry but winehouse is not billie, bessie and certainly not dinah, she is not even comparable!

  • excelent simply

  • What an expressive face she had, her smile speakes .....volumes.

God bless her soul where she is now, He blessed her with such a great voice!

  • It is absolutely sacrilege to invoke Winehouse and Washington in the same breath. Whatever Winehouse's talents may be, she has miles and decades to go before she attains the stature of a Dinah Washington.

  • I AGREE!!! Stop using this great woman's topic board to promote Crackhouse, who gives a shit about her.

  • how about...everyone?

  • indeed, amy winehouse will not be forgotten. i haven't been impressed w/ any female artist to the degree that i am w/ amy in 20 years. one can hear why washington is her fave...

  • WHO would be talking about AMY in here...she will NEVER be of Dinah's status

  • She is sooooooo good.I,m in love with her. What a voice.

  • hot damn !!!!

  • Noel Coward wrote the song when he was madly infatuated with Laurence Olivier. Dinah was a remarkably versatile artist--she could sing ANY and EVERY type of song magnificently. She was justly proud of that ability.

  • Each time I hear this it goes straight to my heart- what a voice!!:)

  • A little history- This song was written by Noel Coward for his lover. He was gay. He wrote both music and lyric.

  • This is one of my all-time favorite songs, I love Dinah. She was one of the greatest singers to grace a stage.

  • nicely edited montage

  • Nobody does it better than Dinah! Nobody!

  • Love Dinah, love the song.... but are you sure the clips that are in color are actually Dinah? Those clips doesn't look like her at all.

  • class!!!

  • Sounds so like Eartha Kitt

  • Eartha sounds like Dinah. LOL. Her she was well established as a great singer prior to Eartha. I like them both.

Hey universalmusicgroup could you please upload Dinah's version of "Cold Cold Heart" if you have it?

  • amazin'...just amazin'...i'm no surprised that Amy Winehouse really likes Dinah Washington

  • insuperable!!!!!

  • Go to Amy Winehouse's videos.

She sounds so much like Dinah that it will blow you away!!

    Amy is INCREDIBLE!!

  • Amy borrows from everybody black. She sounds like Lauren Hill, Dinah, Etta and Ronnie Spector and even Bassey at times. She has a good ear. She's talented but she ain't special or original.

  • You may not think Amy is anyone special, that is your opinion, however, the woman writes all her own music and at the age of 24, she writes profound songs that are original.

To make a racist comment that she borrows from everyone black is ignorant.

She comes from a family of jazz musician's and was exposed to the music of some GREAT jazz singers who happen to be black.

She's the 1st female British artist to win 5 Grammy awards so that ain't to shabby for a white girl!

  • are you american?

to say she borrows from black singers itsn't a racial comment you tart

  • That's your opinion. I have the whole Fitzgerald, Washington and Vaughan collection plus some Billy Holiday, all considered the greatest of Jazz and call me nuts but I believe Amy Winehouse belongs to this elite group. Her performances of Teach me Tonight, No Greater Love and Someone to Watch Over Me (just to name 3) are of a level that few can reach.
