@XZydrateAnatomyX I`m talking that Van den Budenmayer and Presienr are BOTH nicknames :)
The real name of composer is... Zbigniew Antoni Kowalski, but "Kowalski" is a one of most popular names in Poland, it means more or less "Smith", so he choose some more original nickname(s).
@MaximusProteus true, and the reason why this nickname is dutch by origin (van den budenmayer) is simply because he (kowalski) and kieslowski - the director of the dekalog series in which this piece is played - loved the netherlands. In my opinion the biggest honor an artist can give you is write one of his pieces to your name. Being dutch myself, i find it quite an honor, as I think its a pure stroke of genius. Gives me the chills!
@b4ssfactory that's not true. The reason is different. and simple-Money.This is part from Double life of Veroniqe. If composer want to use some piece of Mozart for example is expensive..So Preisner created fiction composer van den Budenmaier. It was cheaper.Sorry for ma poor english
@MaximusProteus oh, i wasn't saying you didn't, I was just agreeing with you, because you're right. A lot of people think they're two different people. :)
this is really powerful.. so deep, building up straight to the heart.. Love, love, love it! And thank you mixailaggelos2004, for making this video work sO well with the music
A truly beautiful piece of music, subtle, yet profound and moving. I think anyone with a heart will enjoy it, Polish and foreign alike. Music speaks across boundaries.
This piece by Preisner was danced to by the Russian ice dancing pair at the Vancouver Olympics just a couple of days ago. I recognized the music immediately. The Russians won the bronze medal. It is fantastic.
@SANARIA7 : Their names are Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin. They performed at the "European Championship 2010 FD" as well as the Vancouver Olympics 2010. It was in the "Free Dance" competition. Mostly, they danced to Preisner's music but there is also a small segment in their routine that incorporated the music of Clint Mansell (Requiem For A Dream). Enjoy the performance and let me know what you thought about it.
living in Poland is not a struggle for life :/ I live here and it is a normal country. It was difficult to live in Poland during WWII and during the period of communism, but now, since 1989 it's really ok.
@dotulla April revealed that living in Poland is still a struggle , the one question I have to ask is will Poland ever be free? 21 years of independence in 216 years, and soon the 217th year is rapidly approaching. Will the true Polish die out, being replaced by neo-socialist subjects of their former partitioners? Oddly enough, life as somebody of Polish blood is difficult, and that's what makes it Goddamn beautiful.
I think maybe growing up in poland so close after the events of WWII could have something to do with him losing the faith in human goodness. Maybe not though as he was born in 1955 but it could be.
May be, because Poland has very tragic history from 1772 to 1989. Now built a new country, new life. Living in Poland is very difficult - it is a real struggle for life every day.
O voi che siete in piccioletta barca, desiderosi d'ascoltar, seguiti dietro al mio legno che cantando varca, O you who are within your little bark, eager to listen, following behind my ship that, singing, crosses to deep seas, tornate a riveder li vostri liti: non vi mettete in pelago, ché forse, perdendo me, rimarreste smarriti. turn back to see your shores again: do not attempt to sail the seas I sail; you may, by losing sight of me, be left astray.

LYRICS : ENGLISH TRANSLATION
(Dante : Towards the Sky)
O you out there, inside your tiny little barge,
eager to listen, following behind
my ship that, singing, crosses to deep seas,
Don't set out into the deep, for fear that, perhaps,
losing sight of me, you be left adrift.
The waters that I sail were never crossed before
Athena inspires me, Apollo is my helmsman.
And the nine Muses show me the Bear Star.

LYRICS:
(Dante : Il chant - Verso il cielo)
O voi che siete in piccioletta barga,
desiderosi d'ascoltar, seguiti
dietro al mio legno che cantando varca,
Non vi mettete in pelago, che' forse,
perdendo me, rimarreste smarriti.
L'acque ch'io prendo gia` mai non si corse;
Minerva spira e conducemi Appollo,
e nove Muse mi dimostram l'Orse.
