Well done video.Who loves McKeespuke? Drug dealers, gangstas, all their worthless crooked cops, the mentally unstable and those who have given themselves up for dead.
@MrOrlandoBeach I did enjoy the crazy coot at the Eat N Park that used to sing into his hair brush. That was classic stuff. You couldn't get near him. The last time he took a bath, Lincoln was in the White House.
I want to see if you can get a interview with the wonderful leaders! Can you get a video of some of the supposed Mckeesport specials (supposed leaders) on video?
@thelazycomic no different, the neighbor gets to lie, watch the new video evidence he got a police citation for. He claims it was a attemted auto hit, which he jumps out in front then walks to the middle. The liar has no end, and the leaders with police apparantly cater to him. Thats Mckeeport, PA. Liars and controversy only getting worse. Too many abandoned houses with raised taxes citywide liars are the prime problem.
It's sad I think, not so funny. I want the port to start bouncing upward... I have for the past decade. We need an interstate. It gets harder and harder to go back,
@johnny20904 This goes for everything... you can't go back. You can reflect... you can remember, but you can't go back. (That means everybody can't go back, not just you). You, in this case, is plural. Nobody can go back. If we could, I'd go back 150 years.
@bigbarno428 Dude... You crack me up. Even you said below the 5th Ave area is a cesspool. I'll make a deal with you. If you want to do a current video and show the nice areas... I'll gladly volunteer to film it for free and produce the video. You can narrate it, tell us what's nice, and why it's nice. (Remember, you told me that all I filmed was the shitty stuff... so now you can show us the nice stuff and be on camera too if you like). I'm willing to work with you on this.
@bigbarno428 Where do things improve? The Versailles Avenue area ?? ROFL I saw the campaign headquarters for Cherepko ? (I can't remember his name to save my life, but he's got great ad signs around town). But I wanted to donate some gasoline and matches to help his civic improvements along. Look, if you live in White Oak, Versailles... out-skirts of Puke-port... you're okay. Anything in town or on the hill, (Versailles Ave. area), it should be bull dozed.
nope, not just that, I'm sure that's where the real terrorist must have come from, I'm sure they won't rebuild until the radio activity from all of the CIA smuggled crack subsides. to better understand what I mean look up CIA plane cocaine in crashes in Mexico.
if you keep on fifth ave. headed towards the bridge on the hospital side of fifth, go under the onramps swing a right then a left on to Brownlee ave., go up the hill , the entire portion of the laft side of the layout is designated the circle, the area on the right is D-block look at it from google maps.
Wow, I looked it up on Google Earth, and you're right. It is totally leveled. How bad was it that they took out that entire area? What was there, cock-roach infested dumps, or what ??
oh man, don't get me started on the pedestrian perspective, it's like, you can't escape the place on foot with out getting a run away police cruiser up your ass, there are very few sidewalks on the outer parimutuel of the city, but much to my delight the " CIRCLE " in Crawford village is now a hole in the ground.
I haven't been to Crawford Village in a really long time. It was a crap-hole for as long back as I can remember... but the "circle" you mentioned. What exactly was that... or where was it? I never lived in CV, so it's an honest question.
what was Kennedy thinking, that's probably why he got shot, cause as a president it would be so embarrassing to be seen in such a place by the rest of the world. not really, but I'm from Crawford, believe me it could happen
I do understand where you're coming from on that comment. If Kennedy were to visit Puke-Port today, he wouldn't have to make the trip to Dallas... just to Crawford Village. Oh hell, for that matter, almost any place in Puke-Port. I've never seen a town piss away so much good money. New sidewalks on 5th Avenue? For what? There's nothing there. At least they've finally gotten rid of that dumb-ass stop sign on West Fifth Avenue. What a waste of time, gas and brakes that thing was.
Do another one of these videos, you did Chernobyl. The Chernobyl diner is accurate because they have the chemicals from the steel mills there. Needs a update because you know how everything there, you call it what? Yeah, facing Act 47 looming, it's much better now! We got JUMBO'S! (Laughs)
@thelazycomic - Hahaha!! Well truthfully, McKeesport always had a little more going than Braddock did... larger population, more industry, more highway access. So I don't think it will ever be as bad as Braddock. But if this economic "shituation" doesn't improve, I don't think McKeesport will progress any further than it's current state-of-being.
Economic Situation ?? Gee... you act like we're in a depression or something. (Can you feel the sarcasm in that remark) ?? The feds keep saying the country is in fine shape. (I wonder which country they're talking about? It must be China, India, or some other place). I'd laugh... if it weren't true. I think our elected idiots are TRYING to turn this country into a huge BRADDOCK.
Good point I guess. But 30 years ago, Braddock was about where McKeesport is now... so does that mean in 30 years from now, McKeesport will look like Braddock does now ??
Several things have killed this town. Section 8 welfare, steel mill closing, and drugs. It is a shame a few ruin it for most. I have seen nicer areas in Kosovo and Iraq when I was there. Also less dangerous.
With the exception of the steel mills closing, the same thing is happening here in Atlanta. We lost the GM plant in Doraville, the Ford plant in Hapeville, and tons of other manufacturing jobs. Now all we have is those things you mentioned and lots of crap-paying service jobs. Sadly, what happened to McKeesport is now happening to the rest of the country. I said to some guy last week that I want my country back. He asked if I could build a time machine.
I like that idea about sending tree huggers to China. Then all of their mills and factories will be shut down and the greedy American companies who buy from China will have to start making things over here again.
Ya know, the poor Chinese people would starve if we sent our tree huggers. The Chinese wouldn't be allowed to harvest the rice to eat because the tree huggers would be blocking the cutting of the rice. (Personally, I'd like to stick a bamboo stick up every tree huggers ass).
I actually only lived in the city for about 2 months. When I heard gunfire on the next street, I called my landlord and told him I was outta there. And that was back in the early 90's, and it has only gotten worse since then.
Blame the United Steelworkers union for demanding outrageous contracts. My dad had 13 weeks vacation twice back in the 60's. So U S Steel fucked the union over good and closed the mills. They were supposed to build a big mill up in Erie but the tree huggers killed that one. So now we get our steel from the chinks just like everything else we buy.
A paid vacation ?? What's that? I've never had one. I've got an idea. Let's send all the tree huggers to China. That can be our export to them. I like it.
@float300 mY EX HUSBAND WAS MURDERED ON JENNYLIND AND PORTER STREET 1/24/10, WE REUNITED after 30 or so years, we met in Paris in our 20/a mNT TrAVELS MISS HIM THEY WILL NEVER FIND THE PERSON, WAS NOT A ROBBERY LIKE STATED
That is really horrible and I'm sorry for your loss. They have got to clean that city up. I personally don't have much faith in the politicians that run that town, and haven't for a very long time. You are correct on they'll never find the person. The Police department is run very thin, so I don't blame them. There are only so many officers on the beat. More are needed, and until the folks who live there start raising hell with City Hall, it ain't gonna happen.
my dad told me he paid for his 4 year college in one summer at the steel mill there in 1980or 1981. and his dad worked there wen he grew up. last time we went down there i asked to see the where he grew up, and it was a empty lot. he lived there till bout 16 then he and his 7 younger siblings moved to irwin. after college he married and had my two oldest brothers in pa one in philly and one somwherelse. me and my older bro. were born in toledo,OH. since 1990 he work here in northwest oh
Your dad worked at the mill in the final years that the city still had a life. By 1985, it was all over. The mill is long gone, along with the city. Now all that goes on there is bad stuff. Three people were recently murdered in Crawford Village, a home invasion. I think it's just going to continue to get worse. Unfortunately, my predictions are usually pretty much right on the target. Thanks for sharing your story from the past.
Three more people murdered yesterday while attending a birthday party in the jungle called McKeesport. Or is it more like a war zone? Someone should drop a bomb on the place and get rid of the worthless scum and derelicts that now inhabit this once delightful valley town.
I hear ya there. I heard about the most recent murders in Da Puke. I actually remember when Crawford Village was a pretty good place to live. NOT ANYMORE. Sadly, the crap just doesn't end in McKeesport. The problems are so wide spread. This country is falling apart so fast, Super Glue couldn't put it back together.
Never thought about the transportation center, but it would have been good to add. There is so much crap wrong with the city, you could go on forever. Hell, I forgot to mention that the McDonald's became the unemployment office. ROFL
Wow, cancer at 38? Well, I noticed you're now 43, so I'm guessing and hoping that you beat it? I hope you're doing okay now. Yeah, that water thing, I remember it well. It was Giardia bacteria growing in the water supply. It was in the 1980's, 'cause I remember going to Nigro's one night for drinks, and they told me that they couldn't use the water because of the crap in it. How stupid was the water authority not to cover the reservoir? It's a park now, with the water tower across the street.
Donate the land to Haiti ? Don't those people have enough problems? LOL Well, Haiti could always use a good toilet. Yeah, I used to love McKeesport too, and used to defend the place when folks would talk about it. Then, one day, I thought, hey, these people are correct. It's a dump that offers nothing but crime. There isn't even a place to shop there these days. Oops, I forgot, there is Family Dollar. WOOP-DEE-SHIT.
This video in neither funny nor constructive. It is superficial and near-sighted. It has no artistic value and is not representative of the kind of present-mindedness one would need in order to paint an accurate or even humorous picture of the area. You, sir, are a cheap and untalented pseudo-satirist. I suggest you begin to re-evaluate the shallow and glib nature of your work. As a McKeesport native, I congratulate you on your success. However, I worry that this piece may be reprehensible.
Look Twatzilla, opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one. Your channel offers nothing. No videos, no photo, no city, no ANYTHING. Come back when you have something to offer other than your shit opinion. And sadly, the video is superbly accurate.
Tiauanna is thriving! you can get meds without perscriptions and a fun night out at a donkey party and it's not run down by the Democrapts! But I bet there is just as much goverment subsidized living or? maybe more? in McSleezeport.
McSleezeport. That's a good one! As for the comment about my neighborhood being like Tijuana? Hmmm. Nobody speaks English, and the new neighbors down the street? Hell, their idea of curtains in the windows? They actually TAPED green garbage bags in their windows for curtains. We used to have rules here we had to follow, but nobody does any longer. It's so bad here that I'm moving back to Pittsburgh soon. Atlanta is a real shit hole too.
How could you be on Locust street and not go to Farmer's Poultry? That place has the best chicken you'll get in your life. And how about Charlie's across the street? There are tons of nursing homes in McKeesport too. You definitely forgot about some great landmarks, and McKeesport isn't as bad as everyone thinks. If you were in the medical field you could get a good paying job here. There's lots of nursing homes, doctors offices, different clinics, not to mention McKeesport Hospital. Peace. - Ross
Yes, Farmer's Poultry does have great chicken. I used to get it there all the time. I figured by now, they were gone. Glad to see they are not. I didn't shoot Locust Street when I did the video, strictly 5th Avenue. I've never been in Charlie's. I'm curious about the landmarks you mention. Which ones? I'm stumped. (I mean, ones that are still there). And not everybody is cut out to do health care, and if those are the only jobs the city has to offer, that is sad.
Wow, you are really brave. I live over in the South Allegheny area near McKeesport and I have to travel through there often. You would never catch me walking around in McKeesport. Usually when I get to the entry of McKeesport I lock the car doors and avoid eye contact with the streetwalkers.
Ha !! If you think McKeesport is scary, go across the river to Duquesne. Over there, I stay in my car to do most of my video shooting. I'm working on a video about Duquesne, and it makes McKeesport look like paradise. I think the only surviving business over there is Schenk's Hardware store. I love shopping in there. It is an old-fashioned hardware store, but as soon as you come back outside, you realize... Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore.
Way to go Democrats! You guys have done a great job over the years running this city into the ground. No, I mean way to go to all the people who keep voting for Democrats in McKeesport. I'm not pushing the Republican party, but wouldn't you try any other party at this point. Anyway, every time I watch the movie Animal House I think of McKeesport, " Thank you sir, may I have another "
It's not just McKeesport, it's the whole damned state that think the dumb-o-crats are gonna save their butts. Sorry to say people, politicians are just politicians. Even the Republi-cons are full of shit these days. At least the Dems have a great marketable item. They should make plastic statues of Nancy Pelosi so we can put them in our yards on Halloween to scare the little kids. (What a face) !!
Thanks. Ya know, it's a comment like this one that makes me get off my duff and put on truthful videos, trying to do it in a comical style, and why not? It's all such a joke these days. But I go thru the hassle of producing these vids, and I'll get 65 hits, if I'm lucky. Maybe if I put WATCH JAPANESE GIRL GET BANGED BY A COKER SPANIEL, I'd get 4 million hits? So many people who click into YouTube are so damned brain dead. Glad to see you're not one of them.
What you miss is from when the times were good there. I miss those too, but that is why I had to make this video. And the good times in McKeesport were so long ago, it almost hard to remember some of those memories.
Well I live in White Oak now (the significantly nicer town over) and grew up in arguably the nicest area in McKeesport. And while I still have fond memories, theyve really turned to mostly depressing revelations. The wealthier areas have fallen into the gutter as well. Theres an almost satirically comical reason The Road, a post-apocalyptic premise, filmed here. If this has a European charm, you must be thinking of bombed-out and Nazi-occupied France.
I compared McKeesport to Beirut in the video, but comparing it to Nazi occupied France works too. But if you go to downtown McKeesport, if you dare, look at the Beaux-Arts styling of some of the old buildings. They must have just been inredible in their prime. Most are now gone, and just a memory.
I drive past the building with the "Discover McKeesport" sign once in awhile, and I giggle every time. From their main street, all I see are dilapidated buildings. And McKeesport has the worst roads I have ever been on ... how does a road become wavy?
BTW lazycomic, you have a very nice voice! Did you say you work in radio?
Yeah, that sign craps me up too. Discover McKeesport? Are they kidding? What's left to discover? PennDOT told me once that those wavy roads you're talking about is caused by cars stopping and starting when the weather is hot and the asphalt is soft. (However, we don't have that problem here in Atlanta, so I think they handing me a line of crap). Yes, I was in radio and have been looking for a job back in it. No luck yet. Thanks for the compliment on the voice.
I like the morbid charme of the towns and cities along the Monongahela. To me, as an european from germany, this is sometimes an apocalytic future scenario of what some towns here could look like in 150 years.
But right now i´m not worried.
To see how the city is torn down, use the timeline in google earth and Streetview from GoolgeMaps. Also BingMaps-BirdeyeView is very useful.
Just wanted to wish a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all former and present McKeesporters! I would love to see a picture of 5th Ave. with the two hanging red bells strung between the light polls, if anybody has one!
I remember those bells. I wonder what low-life stole them? They probably just fell apart from old age. Let's see if anybody has a photo of them out there.
I used to summer in McKeesport during the 60s - 70s. My parents grew up there through the depression.
A few years ago they went for a final visit and drove along Walnut St and across the 5th Ave bridge. My dad said it looked like an abandoned war zone..... with out the shell destruction. Sad, really.
I wonder how much unions had to do with the destabilization of the Steel Mills et al.
Anyway. Thanks for the look see, Lazycomic.
And "Stop and Go" is gone. (good childhood memory on 30th St)
As I always say, Unions are a mixed blessing. There needs to be a middle ground. Without them, you'll be luck to see 20 grand a year to live on. But they want to go the other end of the spectrum, and usually want way too much. How about somewhere in the middle between the 8 bucks an hour the employers want to pay you, and the 30 bucks and hour the unions want to get. Realistically, I think 15 - 20 bucks and hour is a fair wage. (I've never been paid as much as 15 an hour... I'd faint to see it).
Oh, come on. Unless your the mayor or his kid, you cannot be serious. Lazy? Do you know how much effort & time it took to produce that video? But, you're another YouTuber with nothing but a "THRONE" channel, as I call them. You have no photo of yourself, no videos, no town mentioned where you live, no nothing, but you, the internet programming gods that you are, kick back and rate everybody elses stuff. Go buy a camcorder & produce something besides fleas, and let us judge your quality work.
That's crazy. I thought it would have been Homewood/Brushton... or maybe the Hill District... but McKeesport? Things there must be worse than I thought. Damned!
And now guess what? Echostar just announced they are shutting down in March. 600 jobs gone. And why? They claim they could never find enough qualified people to fill their job openings. Do the residents make more money from Welfare? Dealing drugs? Maybe they can't speak to customers without saying "Mutha F---a". Pitiful!!!
Yeah, I heard that about Echostar. Things at Echostar are a double-edge sword, so to speak. They say they can't find qualified employees to work there. I've had friends that worked there, and they told me working there is like checking into a Nazi prison camp. The pay is around $10.00 per hour, and if you live at home, that's okay money. But on your own and you're paying all the bills? Hand to mouth. Jobs are hard to get too, so I guess you've gotta do what you've gotta do now. All such a mess.
Bottom line is, there will never again be good paying jobs like when the mills were running. Sure we have cleaner air and water but we paid a heavy price. Now we have shithole towns all throughout the Mon Valley. They tried to convert Pgh to high-tech but it hasn't worked so far.
You are right about the mills and the heavy price. Funny thing is, I don't feel the air is much cleaner than it was back then, but now we have no jobs. And do these "green" quacks really think that the nasty air from China never gets here? There is only one air-mass over the earth dumb asses. So now China has the bad air, but they have all the jobs. And the shit-hole towns are not just on the Mon. They are all over America now, as we slip toward being a 3rd world country. Adios America.
Sad thing is, when Walmart first opened in our area they had signs all over the store "Made in USA." Those signs are long gone since "Made in China" is on practically everything they sell. China, Mexico and the Far East took our good paying jobs and all we got from them is a trade deficit, illegal aliens and drugs.
I remember the Made In America campaign that Wal-Mart had. That was back in the day when Sam Walton was still in charge. After he died & the kids took over, THAT is when the Chinese crap came to the stores and our shores. PBS Frontline ran a show a few years back called, IS WAL-MART GOOD FOR AMERICA? You should be able to get a copy to watch at your local library. It is worth the time to watch. The show explains it all. Oh, and my neighborhood IS Tijuana. (It is now, anyway).
Damn. I thought I was the only one who remembered Walmarts claim of fame - MADE IN AMERICA. It helped stomp the competition. Who'd a thunk the exact opposite is true today.
One can't buy American in Walmart, and it's still stomping the competition. I hate Walmart and will NEVER EVER shop there.
People look at me like I have a third eye when I mention those "yellow smiley face draped in the red white and blue commercials."
I only go to Wal-Mart, (or Mall-Wart as I call them), for one thing. They have got the best damned sub-sandwiches going. I know they're American Made, because the deli-clerks make them in the stores. I'd like to think the meats & stuff on them are made here too. Their Supreme Sub has got tons of good stuff on it, must be 18" long, and runs $5,98, and you can get 2 meals out of it. It is the only reason that I step into a Wal-Mart.
Heard on the news this week about multiple shootings on 6th St. and Evans Ave. The whole town is nothing but a big Hood anymore. It's what happens when the nigs and thugs take over.
You are right on with this video. I love it. I worked in this town for four years and I agree, at one time it was a great place, but today who knows. One good place still there is the Palisades. They have great shows and do a good job in keeping the oldies, dancing and other good shows in McKeesport. The only real problem is you have to go to McKeesport to go to the Palisades. The Palisades needs to be someplace else. We do not go to a lot of the shows because it is in McKeesport.
Ya know, I never thought about the fact that being the Palisades is in McKeesport could possibly hurt its business. I never considered that, and for me to over-look something like that is not like me. I'm a pretty cynical kinda guy.
Thanks for another vote in the YUCK pile. (I had some guy this morning giving me beans about how the city isn't that bad). Wow, all ya gotta do is look at the comments. Most of same the city is gone, but ya sometimes get somebody with blinders that just doesn't see it. Oh well.
Oh, I know how it got that way, and watched it happen. I didn't live in McKeesport, but lived close enough that I had to drive through there on my way to work. Year after year, the decay just grew. As the decay grew, so did the crime rate. You couldn't pay me enough cash to be a cop in that town. I'm sure that is a police department with a high turn-over rate.
Thanks for this comment... as I'm about to shred somebody that told me not to come back there if I don't like it. (Yeah, like it's some tourist attraction). Ya know, when I make my vacation plans, going to McKeesport is ALWAYS at the top of my list. Hmmmm, I could go to the Grand Canyon... OR... the Grand Hole called McKeesport. For that vacation, you not only get a tour guide, but a body guard too.
Well, on a brighter note, you know what would be terrific? If someone who has a collection of Jeff Madden paintings would post them on a web site for all us old McKeesporters to enjoy! Mr. Madden's artwork depicts the town as we remember it from our childhood. Or maybe someone has photos or slides of McKeesport in the 50's and 60's that they'd be willing to share. Wish I had used my camera a lot more back then!
Your video is painful to watch but not as painful as going there, which I try to avoid. I guess I'm old enough to remember the "Pote" in its heydey, when the B&O ran thru town past Balsamo's and there wasn't an empty storefront to be seen. I have so many good memories like Sat. afternoon cartoons at the Memorial and Sam's hot dogs! What a shame, but this is no different than other Mon valley mill towns after the steel industry collapsed. Or should we say, moved overseas?
Yeah, you & I are about the same age. I remember all that stuff too. I worked in East McKeesport when all the mills were closing, and remember saying, yes, that's the end of McKeesport. (Seems like Duquesne lost it even before the mills died). As for the mills moving over-seas, they were just ahead of the times. Look now, at how many jobs are NOT HERE. They say, we have cleaner air. Do they not realize that the air in China gets here eventually? I'd rather have the jobs.
Amen to that! Now we have clean air in a shell of what used to be a nice town. Big deal! The good people moved out and the thugs took over. Now it's another Braddock. I hold out very little hope of ever seeing our town recover unless something is found to replace the mill. Echostar isn't the answer. Then we need to get rid of the riff-raff that invaded after the good citizens left to find jobs somewhere else.
Here's what's really sad. There are NO JOBS, ANYWHERE. I live in Atlanta now, and our unemployment rate is worse than Pittsburgh's. We're at 10.9, which really means DOUBLE THAT NUMBER, because they only count people who are currently collecting unemployment. I was never counted in that because I was self employed, but have not worked in 2 years, but I'm not counted. People who's unemployment ran out, aren't counted. The WHOLE country is in this DEPRESSION. Okay, I said it. DEPRESSION.
Too funny. That was how I wanted folks to look at the video, like a WQED documentary, but twisted. The mayor hates the video. I called an ex-coworker of mine while I was up there in July. He said, jokingly, he didn't know if he could talk to me because the mayor even asked him about me. It was great. He told the mayor he never heard of me! What a hoot. Oddly enough, where does my friend live? In Christy Park, and has been there forever. I won't mention his name for apparent reasons.
If you know the long-time residents, you just might know him. Great guy. Hs is one of those people who is so comical without even trying. I've always had a lot of respect for his talents. If I were stranded on Gilligan's Island, I'd want him there. He's the guy who could make a boat out of 2 palm trees and coconut milk. Now THAT... is talent.
Yes, I used to consider Christy Park, kind of, a suburb of the dark hole called McKeesport. Unfortunately, it is starting to look like the dark hole itself. I knew a lot a great folks from Christy Park. They were always there for you in time of need, etc. And folks used to take pride in Christy. What happened? I feel bad for the long time residents that still live there. I'm sure crime has gone up, since ''the hole'' is just a short drive down Walnut. It really is a crime.
Funny, I do the same things, picking up trash when I see it. (Within limits, I'm not picking up a tossed out Pamper with crap in it, that's where I draw the line). If you dispose of trash, sounds like you should start with that ''deliverance'' crowd. (Ahhh, what a fantasy for sure). Rot Boxes? I like that term. That's a hoot. Too bad it's true. As for your comment on safe... I don't think anything is safe these days. I live in Crime-lanta, trying to catch up with Detroit on crime.
now im from north huntingdon, but my grandma and my dad are from mckeesport. christy park is probably one of the safer sections right now... its all the old people and anywhere you go somebody somewhere has a connection to christy park.. meanwhile like maybe at most a thousand people live there... now there's an ice cream shop "christy cones' it seems like thats the happenin place to be lol
I dated a girl from North Huntingdon a long, long time ago. It was always nice out that way. QUIET. Yeah, the Christy Park area isn't too bad yet. Although it is looking real rough these days. Not the people, but the buildings. I was just up there a few weeks ago, (I live in Atlanta now), and I couldn't believe the decay look of most of the places. Damned, can't they at least buy some paint and paint their homes? I knew a girl that lived on Walnut. Her house still has the same yellow paint !!!
Me and my mom HATE driving through McKeesport, I have to go through there all the time to go to Progressive music for my viola and stuff, and my sister had to go for her social security thing a few times in the last two months, plus the enormous candy place down there that we have to go to for sports stands and stuff. We just get the creeps driving down there, all the pshycos and plus it just feels deserted =/ (I live in West Mifflin, so I go through McKeesport often anyways) nice video though!
Too funny, but I know whatcha mean about the drive through there. I used to live in West Mifflin myself, so I had to go to McKeesport a lot too. Bad part is, really nothing to go there for these days. There's really nothing left there. I think the businesses you mentioned are pretty much about it. Thanks for checking out the video and good luck with school this year. (Keep your grades up and maybe your mom won't make ya go to McKeesport). :-)
Wow, you are really talking about McKeesport of old. Now, they're looking for pennies and hooking their sisters. Ahh, the good old days. (I was born there too, in the hospital in McKeesport, but never actually lived there. Well, once for about a month, I did. I rented an apartment on Park Street for 1 month, but couldn't deal with the hooker who lived above me turning tricks all night, so I moved, breaking my lease. Nice neighborhood). That was back in 1993.
Yea, that was the '40's. I wasn't born yet but of course heard all the stories. I think they lived on Jenny Lind St. (?) and we had relatives there , my uncle owned Davis Aluminum Siding at the point - guess that's all gone too. Still glad to have the memories. Haven't been back in ages. My sister lives in Latrobe now.
Wow, I remember Davis Aluminum Siding. I haven't seen it in a lot of years, so you're right, it's probably gone now too. And I wasn't born in the 40's either. And here's a question. Is it pronounced LAY-TROBE? or is it pronounced LE-TROBE? I hear both. I've always said LE-TROBE.
It was nice in the 50's/60's but things were so different then. My Mom was born in Ligonier and we lived all around, Fredricktown, Monroeville and LAY-trobe, but more like LA-trobe. I remember going to Isleys (sp) for ice cream, probably gone too. Hell, everything's almost all gone. I'm in CA since '68 - still miss the seasons and PA is still the most beautiful state. Good luck with your video venture, you're good at it.
Thanks on the video venture comment. I'm trying to get jobs producing high school reunion videos. I just did one for the Belle Vernon graduating class of 1959. It was a blast doing it, and I thought the video was done very tastefully. (Most photos were from the original yearbook). Since I can't find work, I'm trying this now for an income. As for Isaly's, yes they are gone. The whole chain is gone. Klondike's are now made by somebody else. (They're still good though). YUM.
I was born in McKeesport. My grandmother worked as a nurse at McKeesport Hospital for 40 years. McKeesport is in my blood. McKeespuke? Diseaseport? Ha ha! It's funny because it's true. Why lie? This place is downright third-worldly.
And yet this place helped motivate me to teach myself to play the violin so that I could...get the f___ away from there. And for that I'm grateful.
The fiddler in the video response up above is me.
I totally understand the part on ''getting out of there''. Drove through there today, being that I'm in Pittsburgh at the moment. It is so trashed and worn out. I've heard the mayor is furious with this video and me. I guess the truth hurts really bad.
How 2 justify this kind of profound, long-term urban degradation? One can't.
And if all the truth does is motivate one to repress or deny the truth...then that's pathetic. Confront it. Fix it. Salvage what can be salvaged and raze the rest. Give the city the humble dignity that it deserves. Far from impossible.
Tough luck for the rest of us that the US's leadership class/investment class (socialism for the wealthy) has become so untenably incompetent, irresponsible and corrupt. Why lie?
my dad worked at the steel plant during his years at penn state in the late 70s nd early 80s. my papap worked there to to support all 8 of his kids. they lived just up the hill on the same road as the viking. my dad said there was a lot of pollution nd his car he parked under the train bridge to work nd it was black he said.
With the dirty air came good paying jobs and a good standard of living. Then, all the ''green people'' started barking about the dirt & pollution. We still have the dirt & pollution, but now it's spewed out in China, not here. Oh, we still get to breathe it in eventually, but now we don't have those jobs any longer. I miss those old days. (Damned tree huggers).
This video is hilarious!! Too bad you didn't get all the hookers near the hospital on camera. Maybe you should film in the evening, haha. Or hang out in Foodland parking lot and film all the action the jitney drivers get.
Thanks on the compliment. Really needed to hear something good today. Also, thanks for actually GETTING the video. Here's a story for you. I used to drive cab in that city back in the 70's. That Foodland was one of my worst pickup places. One idiot cab fare after another. And if you mentioned tipping to them, they thought that was a city in China. That was for the old Tube City cab Company. Low pay, shit conditions. The hookers by the hospital? Who the hell has money there to pay them?
Yep, and most other businesses followed closely behind. I remember seeing a sign in Duquesne a few years back that said they were happy to welcome their newest business. That business was, THE FOOD BANK. I couldn't believe that Duquesne actually considered the food bank a business. Well, there will be lots of food banks popping up with this crappy economy. Guess I'll have to get used to saying NACHO-CHEESE.
Wow... and I thought I was the only one too. When I first posted this video, I took lots of heat about it. Now I know somebody else shares that view. And in 5 weeks, I get to go and film Duquesne and Braddock. Should be... uh... fun... if I'm not shot, robbed or mugged. Oh, wait a minute. Braddock is cool now. There's nothing there, including the hood rats.
Yeah, I've heard lots of great things about Arizona. Dummy me. I moved to Crap-lanta? (What was I thinking)? High humidity and crime to match. I don't think McKeesport has humidity these days though. I think that packed up and moved too. Ha ha.
I grew up in Pennsylvania. I have lived in Arizona for almost 20 years now. I Love Arizona!!!!!!!! Can't say enough good about it! I never realized their actually were places that aren't humid! Arizona is one of them. Cute vid!
Thanks on the music comment. It isn't from the Candy & Mike Show. That song goes "EENIE MEENIE CHILI BEANIE, BEE BEE BOP BOP, WE'RE REALLY GLAD TO BE HERE". I think that covers it.
You called it perfect, the city has gone to the dogs, the sad thing is, I don't think it can be repaired, and it gets worse by the day. this was a great documentary and truthful. I just wonder how you made the video in the downtown section, without getting mugged, or having your camera stolen.
What you didn't see in the video was the fact that I borrowed a couple of George W. Bush's secret service guys to guard me. (Now Unca Baracka's secret service guys). Just kidding about the secret service. Seriously, I never have a problem when I go to McKeesport. I think my problem will come the day that I meet with the mayor to get his input. I'm looking at a date in mid-July for that. (Next time I'll be in the area). THEN IT'S ON TO PUKE-ANE for the next video.
happened over to this video, for screwed up people, Ihave the same thing going on here in my town, just wait till i get my cam corder to down load, I just wish I could of caught video of when they started bulldozing some of the buildings and the empty lots. my buds said they shoulda kept on going block after block aka the whole town
I agree, but politicians think they are above us all, and that they know best. Of course, if they knew best, we wouldn't be in this financial meltdown that we are going through. I mean, how difficult would it be to do online questionaires asking people for their input? They'll trust computers enough for us to cast our votes, but not enough for us to cast our opinions & inputs. Oh, that would be crossing the line I guess. I'm so thankful that we have YouTube to at least get the word out.
I never noticed any problems at Renzie. Especially during the day around spring and summer there are usually softball and baseball games going on.I never see anyone out there at night either.
I thought that comment was a bit odd myself, but then I haven't lived in Pittsburgh for a good many years, so I thought, anything is possible. I thought maybe these things were going on deeper in the park, not on the main street through the park. Maybe Renzie Park is still one of McKeesport's safe-havens?
I can relate to this. Atlanta, (where I actually live), is even worse than that. The news here every night is who got shot, robbed, looted, stabbed. Well you get the picture. Here, they don't even bother with drive-by shootings. They just shoot right through the walls of apartment buildings, and whomever is on the other side of the wall gets killed, they don't care. I do not get it, but then we're not thugs.
another thing about mckeesport.. a little girl walking out of school was shot dead. she was in like 4th,5th,or 6th grade. either way veryy young. assholes wanting to do a drive by shot her. how pathetic is that? shooting a little girl. what the hell did she do to them!? i want out of here soo bad. but im gonna mind my own buisness finish middle school, go to highschool at serra catholic and get the hell outta here. who knows what it will be like then?=o
i agree mckeesport is such a shithole anymore. i played football for the middle school, and damn. it was pathetic how the kids there have no class anymore. and ya i was thrown off because one of them punched me so i hit him back even harder.. do i agree with the result? no. we both shoulda been thrown off or suspended. only i was thrown off. and yes the other kid was black, i figured out why i was the only one thrown off now.
You are correct. Fair is fair. If you were both fighting, you both should have been tossed off, or suspended. Racism and reverse racism are not cool. This country will never be whole until both types are eliminated. Sadly, I don't ever think that will happen.

MckeesportRoseGarden 1 month ago
@MckeesportRoseGarden Is the new batch no different than the old ones? Didn't you guys just get a new mayor?
thelazycomic 1 month ago

Anything in town or on the hill, (Versailles Ave. area), it should be bull dozed.
thelazycomic 10 months ago
nope, not just that, I'm sure that's where the real terrorist must have come from, I'm sure they won't rebuild until the radio activity from all of the CIA smuggled crack subsides. to better understand what I mean look up CIA plane cocaine in crashes in Mexico.
DavidPennable 1 year ago
if you keep on fifth ave. headed towards the bridge on the hospital side of fifth, go under the onramps swing a right then a left on to Brownlee ave., go up the hill , the entire portion of the laft side of the layout is designated the circle, the area on the right is D-block look at it from google maps.
DavidPennable 1 year ago
Wow, I looked it up on Google Earth, and you're right. It is totally leveled. How bad was it that they took out that entire area? What was there, cock-roach infested dumps, or what ??
thelazycomic 1 year ago
oh man, don't get me started on the pedestrian perspective, it's like, you can't escape the place on foot with out getting a run away police cruiser up your ass, there are very few sidewalks on the outer parimutuel of the city, but much to my delight the " CIRCLE " in Crawford village is now a hole in the ground.
DavidPennable 1 year ago
I haven't been to Crawford Village in a really long time. It was a crap-hole for as long back as I can remember... but the "circle" you mentioned. What exactly was that... or where was it? I never lived in CV, so it's an honest question.
thelazycomic 1 year ago
what was Kennedy thinking, that's probably why he got shot, cause as a president it would be so embarrassing to be seen in such a place by the rest of the world. not really, but I'm from Crawford, believe me it could happen
DavidPennable 1 year ago
I do understand where you're coming from on that comment. If Kennedy were to visit Puke-Port today, he wouldn't have to make the trip to Dallas... just to Crawford Village. Oh hell, for that matter, almost any place in Puke-Port. I've never seen a town piss away so much good money. New sidewalks on 5th Avenue? For what? There's nothing there. At least they've finally gotten rid of that dumb-ass stop sign on West Fifth Avenue. What a waste of time, gas and brakes that thing was.
thelazycomic 1 year ago
Do another one of these videos, you did Chernobyl. The Chernobyl diner is accurate because they have the chemicals from the steel mills there. Needs a update because you know how everything there, you call it what? Yeah, facing Act 47 looming, it's much better now! We got JUMBO'S! (Laughs)
MckeesportRoseGarden 1 year ago
@thelazycomic - Hahaha!! Well truthfully, McKeesport always had a little more going than Braddock did... larger population, more industry, more highway access. So I don't think it will ever be as bad as Braddock. But if this economic "shituation" doesn't improve, I don't think McKeesport will progress any further than it's current state-of-being.
PittsDick77 1 year ago
Economic Situation ?? Gee... you act like we're in a depression or something. (Can you feel the sarcasm in that remark) ?? The feds keep saying the country is in fine shape. (I wonder which country they're talking about? It must be China, India, or some other place). I'd laugh... if it weren't true. I think our elected idiots are TRYING to turn this country into a huge BRADDOCK.
thelazycomic 1 year ago
Hey, it could be worse.... (Braddock).
PittsDick77 1 year ago
Good point I guess. But 30 years ago, Braddock was about where McKeesport is now... so does that mean in 30 years from now, McKeesport will look like Braddock does now ??
thelazycomic 1 year ago
Several things have killed this town. Section 8 welfare, steel mill closing, and drugs. It is a shame a few ruin it for most. I have seen nicer areas in Kosovo and Iraq when I was there. Also less dangerous.
doransignal 1 year ago
With the exception of the steel mills closing, the same thing is happening here in Atlanta. We lost the GM plant in Doraville, the Ford plant in Hapeville, and tons of other manufacturing jobs. Now all we have is those things you mentioned and lots of crap-paying service jobs. Sadly, what happened to McKeesport is now happening to the rest of the country. I said to some guy last week that I want my country back. He asked if I could build a time machine.

I like that idea about sending tree huggers to China. Then all of their mills and factories will be shut down and the greedy American companies who buy from China will have to start making things over here again.
float300 1 year ago
Ya know, the poor Chinese people would starve if we sent our tree huggers. The Chinese wouldn't be allowed to harvest the rice to eat because the tree huggers would be blocking the cutting of the rice. (Personally, I'd like to stick a bamboo stick up every tree huggers ass).

I actually only lived in the city for about 2 months. When I heard gunfire on the next street, I called my landlord and told him I was outta there. And that was back in the early 90's, and it has only gotten worse since then.
thelazycomic 1 year ago
Blame the United Steelworkers union for demanding outrageous contracts. My dad had 13 weeks vacation twice back in the 60's. So U S Steel fucked the union over good and closed the mills. They were supposed to build a big mill up in Erie but the tree huggers killed that one. So now we get our steel from the chinks just like everything else we buy.
float300 1 year ago
A paid vacation ?? What's that? I've never had one. I've got an idea. Let's send all the tree huggers to China. That can be our export to them. I like it.

Thanks for sharing your story from the past.
thelazycomic 1 year ago
Three more people murdered yesterday while attending a birthday party in the jungle called McKeesport. Or is it more like a war zone? Someone should drop a bomb on the place and get rid of the worthless scum and derelicts that now inhabit this once delightful valley town.
float300 1 year ago
I hear ya there. I heard about the most recent murders in Da Puke. I actually remember when Crawford Village was a pretty good place to live. NOT ANYMORE.

Peace. - Ross
seamonkeytrainer 2 years ago
Yes, Farmer's Poultry does have great chicken. I used to get it there all the time. I figured by now, they were gone. Glad to see they are not. I didn't shoot Locust Street when I did the video, strictly 5th Avenue. I've never been in Charlie's. I'm curious about the landmarks you mention. Which ones? I'm stumped. (I mean, ones that are still there). And not everybody is cut out to do health care, and if those are the only jobs the city has to offer, that is sad.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Wow, you are really brave. I live over in the South Allegheny area near McKeesport and I have to travel through there often. You would never catch me walking around in McKeesport. Usually when I get to the entry of McKeesport I lock the car doors and avoid eye contact with the streetwalkers.
asavage999 2 years ago

Anyway, every time I watch the movie Animal House I think of McKeesport, " Thank you sir, may I have another "

MaxPhactor21 2 years ago

Did you say you work in radio?
thatchickinpa 2 years ago

Pitiful!!!
float300 2 years ago
Yeah, I heard that about Echostar. Things at Echostar are a double-edge sword, so to speak. They say they can't find qualified employees to work there. I've had friends that worked there, and they told me working there is like checking into a Nazi prison camp. The pay is around $10.00 per hour, and if you live at home, that's okay money. But on your own and you're paying all the bills? Hand to mouth. Jobs are hard to get too, so I guess you've gotta do what you've gotta do now. All such a mess.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Bottom line is, there will never again be good paying jobs like when the mills were running. Sure we have cleaner air and water but we paid a heavy price. Now we have shithole towns all throughout the Mon Valley. They tried to convert Pgh to high-tech but it hasn't worked so far.
float300 2 years ago
You are right about the mills and the heavy price. Funny thing is, I don't feel the air is much cleaner than it was back then, but now we have no jobs. And do these "green" quacks really think that the nasty air from China never gets here? There is only one air-mass over the earth dumb asses. So now China has the bad air, but they have all the jobs. And the shit-hole towns are not just on the Mon. They are all over America now, as we slip toward being a 3rd world country. Adios America.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Sad thing is, when Walmart first opened in our area they had signs all over the store "Made in USA." Those signs are long gone since "Made in China" is on practically everything they sell. China, Mexico and the Far East took our good paying jobs and all we got from them is a trade deficit, illegal aliens and drugs.
float300 2 years ago
I remember the Made In America campaign that Wal-Mart had. That was back in the day when Sam Walton was still in charge. After he died & the kids took over, THAT is when the Chinese crap came to the stores and our shores. PBS Frontline ran a show a few years back called, IS WAL-MART GOOD FOR AMERICA? You should be able to get a copy to watch at your local library. It is worth the time to watch. The show explains it all. Oh, and my neighborhood IS Tijuana. (It is now, anyway).
thelazycomic 2 years ago
People look at me like I have a third eye when I mention those "yellow smiley face draped in the red white and blue commercials."
knightflyte 2 years ago
I only go to Wal-Mart, (or Mall-Wart as I call them), for one thing. They have got the best damned sub-sandwiches going. I know they're American Made, because the deli-clerks make them in the stores. I'd like to think the meats & stuff on them are made here too. Their Supreme Sub has got tons of good stuff on it, must be 18" long, and runs $5,98, and you can get 2 meals out of it. It is the only reason that I step into a Wal-Mart.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Don't be too sure about that! The meat in the subs may be Chinese dogs, cats, or rats!
float300 2 years ago
Hmmm... never thought of that... but then, what the hell is safe to eat these days?
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Heard on the news this week about multiple shootings on 6th St. and Evans Ave. The whole town is nothing but a big Hood anymore. It's what happens when the nigs and thugs take over.
float300 2 years ago
You are right on with this video. I love it. I worked in this town for four years and I agree, at one time it was a great place, but today who knows. One good place still there is the Palisades. They have great shows and do a good job in keeping the oldies, dancing and other good shows in McKeesport. The only real problem is you have to go to McKeesport to go to the Palisades. The Palisades needs to be someplace else. We do not go to a lot of the shows because it is in McKeesport.
edrichmond44 2 years ago
Ya know, I never thought about the fact that being the Palisades is in McKeesport could possibly hurt its business. I never considered that, and for me to over-look something like that is not like me. I'm a pretty cynical kinda guy.

Why bother is right...If you don't know how McKeesport got that way...you're blind!
vierzwanzig 2 years ago
Oh, I know how it got that way, and watched it happen. I didn't live in McKeesport, but lived close enough that I had to drive through there on my way to work. Year after year, the decay just grew. As the decay grew, so did the crime rate. You couldn't pay me enough cash to be a cop in that town. I'm sure that is a police department with a high turn-over rate.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
That's funny, my uncle is (or used to be) the chief of police. Thank God I no longer live there. Big Crap hole!!!
yesitsmecraig 2 years ago
Thanks for this comment... as I'm about to shred somebody that told me not to come back there if I don't like it. (Yeah, like it's some tourist attraction). Ya know, when I make my vacation plans, going to McKeesport is ALWAYS at the top of my list. Hmmmm, I could go to the Grand Canyon... OR... the Grand Hole called McKeesport. For that vacation, you not only get a tour guide, but a body guard too.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Well, on a brighter note, you know what would be terrific? If someone who has a collection of Jeff Madden paintings would post them on a web site for all us old McKeesporters to enjoy! Mr. Madden's artwork depicts the town as we remember it from our childhood. Or maybe someone has photos or slides of McKeesport in the 50's and 60's that they'd be willing to share. Wish I had used my camera a lot more back then!
float300 2 years ago
Your video is painful to watch but not as painful as going there, which I try to avoid. I guess I'm old enough to remember the "Pote" in its heydey, when the B&O ran thru town past Balsamo's and there wasn't an empty storefront to be seen. I have so many good memories like Sat. afternoon cartoons at the Memorial and Sam's hot dogs! What a shame, but this is no different than other Mon valley mill towns after the steel industry collapsed. Or should we say, moved overseas?
float300 2 years ago
Yeah, you & I are about the same age. I remember all that stuff too. I worked in East McKeesport when all the mills were closing, and remember saying, yes, that's the end of McKeesport. (Seems like Duquesne lost it even before the mills died). As for the mills moving over-seas, they were just ahead of the times. Look now, at how many jobs are NOT HERE. They say, we have cleaner air. Do they not realize that the air in China gets here eventually? I'd rather have the jobs.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Amen to that! Now we have clean air in a shell of what used to be a nice town. Big deal! The good people moved out and the thugs took over. Now it's another Braddock. I hold out very little hope of ever seeing our town recover unless something is found to replace the mill. Echostar isn't the answer. Then we need to get rid of the riff-raff that invaded after the good citizens left to find jobs somewhere else.
float300 2 years ago

ILoveTheJB11 2 years ago
Too funny, but I know whatcha mean about the drive through there. I used to live in West Mifflin myself, so I had to go to McKeesport a lot too. Bad part is, really nothing to go there for these days. There's really nothing left there. I think the businesses you mentioned are pretty much about it. Thanks for checking out the video and good luck with school this year. (Keep your grades up and maybe your mom won't make ya go to McKeesport). :-)

What memories! My parents met at JCPenney's, and my sister was born there. Been a long, long time. Thanks for the video!
lasvegashilton1 2 years ago
Wow, you are really talking about McKeesport of old. Now, they're looking for pennies and hooking their sisters. Ahh, the good old days. (I was born there too, in the hospital in McKeesport, but never actually lived there. Well, once for about a month, I did. I rented an apartment on Park Street for 1 month, but couldn't deal with the hooker who lived above me turning tricks all night, so I moved, breaking my lease. Nice neighborhood). That was back in 1993.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Yea, that was the '40's. I wasn't born yet but of course heard all the stories. I think they lived on Jenny Lind St. (?) and we had relatives there , my uncle owned Davis Aluminum Siding at the point - guess that's all gone too. Still glad to have the memories. Haven't been back in ages. My sister lives in Latrobe now.
lasvegashilton1 2 years ago
Wow, I remember Davis Aluminum Siding. I haven't seen it in a lot of years, so you're right, it's probably gone now too. And I wasn't born in the 40's either. And here's a question. Is it pronounced LAY-TROBE? or is it pronounced LE-TROBE? I hear both. I've always said LE-TROBE.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
It was nice in the 50's/60's but things were so different then. My Mom was born in Ligonier and we lived all around, Fredricktown, Monroeville and LAY-trobe, but more like LA-trobe. I remember going to Isleys (sp) for ice cream, probably gone too. Hell, everything's almost all gone. I'm in CA since '68 - still miss the seasons and PA is still the most beautiful state. Good luck with your video venture, you're good at it.
lasvegashilton1 2 years ago

I guess the truth hurts really bad.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
How 2 justify this kind of profound, long-term urban degradation? One can't.
And if all the truth does is motivate one to repress or deny the truth...then that's pathetic. Confront it. Fix it. Salvage what can be salvaged and raze the rest. Give the city the humble dignity that it deserves. Far from impossible.
Tough luck for the rest of us that the US's leadership class/investment class (socialism for the wealthy) has become so untenably incompetent, irresponsible and corrupt. Why lie?

my dad worked at the steel plant during his years at penn state in the late 70s nd early 80s. my papap worked there to to support all 8 of his kids. they lived just up the hill on the same road as the viking. my dad said there was a lot of pollution nd his car he parked under the train bridge to work nd it was black he said.
maiolo94 2 years ago
With the dirty air came good paying jobs and a good standard of living. Then, all the ''green people'' started barking about the dirt & pollution. We still have the dirt & pollution, but now it's spewed out in China, not here. Oh, we still get to breathe it in eventually, but now we don't have those jobs any longer. I miss those old days. This video is hilarious!! Too bad you didn't get all the hookers near the hospital on camera. Maybe you should film in the evening, haha. Or hang out in Foodland parking lot and film all the action the jitney drivers get.
Kimmygr33 2 years ago

You are correct. Fair is fair. If you were both fighting, you both should have been tossed off, or suspended. Racism and reverse racism are not cool. This country will never be whole until both types are eliminated. Sadly, I don't ever think that will happen.
