  • elton is the creepiest creeper that ever did creep. honestly, he'd be downright scary if he weren't so ridiculous.

  • Too many Eltons and not enough Knightleys in the world. :/

  • I discovered Jonny Le Miller with this version of Emma and is is absolutaly dreamy !!! I'M IN LOVE.....

  • @cantalius - me too - he's pretty hot in Mansfield Park too!

  • she kinda looks like leighton meester at certain angles

  • I love the facial expressions that Romola makes as Emma. She played Emma really well and captured the very essence of her character. Also when Mr Elton is so wrong for his regard for ms smith. "for herself I couldn't care less if she lives or dies" hahahaahaha so funny

  • OMG! Mr. Elton! i wanna puke!

  • does mr elton in this remind anyone of mr collins in the bbc pride and predjudice? theyre both realy creepy =)

  • DUMBELDORE!!!

  • I cringe everytime Mr Elton speaks...

  • 7:30 haha this really proves mr knightley right from the beginning! But emma can't possibly be that naiv, to think that she didn't encourage elton. She's been smiling at him all this time! How could anyone take that as something else than a typical encouraging behaviour? ofc mr elton gets confused!

  • This version is far far far superior to the Gwenyth Paltrow version.

  • its funny how mr knightley (john) says out of the blue "i knew it" as if he is referring to the way mr. elton is giving attentions to emma instead of being concerned about the snow.

  • I enjoyed this part so much. lmao :D

  • I knew someone like Elton once. Every time he was in my presence, I felt I should scrape him off with a big old butter knife......

  • J Knightley: It's snowing.

    Everyone else: HOLY SHIT.

Mr Knightley: Calm the FUCK down.

  • why does mr knightley always leave the front door open :)

  • jane austen always has the creepy guy and mr.elton is it in this book/movie

  • The annoying thing about Blake Ritson playing Elton is that he's much more attractive (although a little creepy, perhaps) when he's confident and his hair is all done up than when he's all melancholy and moral as Edmund...

  • @whatallison I disagree. I can hardly stand him as Mr. Elton.

  • Emma's got nerves!

    Go Emma!

  • @tay456tay I was just about to say that! I think it is the most fitting phrase for him <3

  • Who are the idiots who disliked this? lol

  • I love everything out of Mr. John Knightley's mouth but I think "In those shoes? I don't think so," absolutely takes the cake

  • Mr Knightley - "It's the horse I'm sorry for".

    Adorable!

  • Mr. Elton, "Miss Woodhouse, Miss Woodhouse, Miss Woodhouse, Miss Woodhouse, Miss Woodhouse".

    He's beginning to annoy me.

  • poor mr. elton/edmund. :(

  • @luisacart I like him so much better as Edmund in Mansfield Park.

  • Mr. Elton omg haahahahahahahahahaha I don't care if she lives or dies lol Stright to the point.

  • hahahahaha her face. Why men must you interupt a covsersation of this importance.

  • "I couldn't care less if she lives or dies!" Okay, that was a bit callous.

  • I found Mr. Elton really attractive until he insulted Ms.Smith, then I was ready to punch him.

  • Mr.Elton is like the most Creppy stalker ever he makes Mr.Collins look like an little lamb if you ask me...

  • the actresses who play Emma and Ms. Taylor/Mrs. Weston played rivals (well sort of) for one man’s affection in Daniel Deronda (which is another mini-series by BBC)

  • theres something abt ramola that reminds me of drew barrymore AND cameroon diaz........i guessits in her mouth and facial expressions :)

  • Um ok, I am a bit confused. In all the other parts of this, Emma's hair is shoulder-lengthish right? But then at 8:41 her braid goes past her chest? What??

  • @xhalfbloodprincess6 No, her hair is much longer, you are maybe comparing that part to the part where Emma's hair were short because she was only 17 and that was in the beginning where she planned to match John and Isabella together. At the moment Emma is about 22 or 23 (can't remember clearly) and her hair is obviously longer, it's just on topknot...

  • lmao mr elton's voice is so creepy and weird but he's still pretty hot :L

  • i've watched 'clueless' way too many times cuz i keep expecting ealton to say 'rolling with the homies'

  • Emma's face when Elton confesses his behavior was hilarious! It's too good!

  • the panic in Emma's voice when her brother in law didn't came into their carriage. XD

  • Oh, but Mr. Elton is so handsome!

Why must these men in Jane Austen's movies be so good-looking?

  • oh...is that jealousy I see at 1:47?? :-D

  • Okay, it's been driving me nuts that Mr. Knightley cannot close a door! He steps out of his home in the middle of winter, opening both doors, and just leaves them like that. I'm sure a servant closed them eventually, but not right away, and it's not the first time it's happened. You may be gorgeous, Mr. Knightley, but please lessen the size of your carbon footprint!

  • @LizzyBnLOZ Have you noticed that Mr Knightly always opens doors and Mr Woodhouse is always closing doors??

  • I'd be terrified if I were alone in the carriage with that man!

  • I'd be terrified if I were alone in the carrige with that man!

  • I love Mr Knightley's hints and nudges of Mr Elton liking Emma too much:)

  • I think Knightley is so handsome here :)

  • @lightscomingout I think both George and John Knightley are handsome here :)

  • "Your carriage......waits."

For a moment I thought Mr. Elton would turn into Christopher Walken.^^

  • I love Mr Knithley's sarcasm. He begins to be gelous ...

  • Elton is so funny!

  • i love the look on her face when after her says "as your friend"!!!lol

  • I love the way Knightly looks at her <3<3<3

  • I love when Elton says that Emma's health is "paramount" and her dad looks so concerned and nods! XD

  • what a wonderfully awkward dinner party! :D

  • the way Mr. Knightley looks at the snow looks like he's gonna jump out and play in it because he's so happy.

  • I can't think of the actor who portrays Mr. Elton as gorgeous or hot. But I think it's only because he does such a great job of portraying the character. The character is a tool, and that is the vibe is gives off in this. Otherwise, he is a very good looking guy and I'm sure in another role he would be very appealing, indeed!

  • @wunderfool1973 You should check him out in Mansfield Park 2007 then, he's one of the dashing Austen men :)

  • love the 'sed semper amico' inscription above Mr Knightley's head at 9:11

  • This is fricking funny i just kept laughing at mr elton's sorry expression i am sorry

  • i feel sorry for emma, but she cause it on her self. ha haa haaa. her match making back fired ha haa haaa

  • Mr. Elton reminds me of Mr. Collins in some way...

  • @alexandrabak that's because they're both kind of weird and creepy.

and not very manlike if you ask me, and they've both got weird manners!

  • i love how mr. knightley looks when he walks out into the snow :D

    like a little boy :)

  • i would be scared to be in the same coach with him alone

  • i feel kind of sorry for mr. elton at this point. it looked kind of heartbroken in the carriage when she told him to 'sit over there'.

  • Oh we can all relate to Emma's situation so well. Trying to ignore and eventually being obliged to scorn unwanted attentions.

  • @musicalmeg19 It's a bit like 'can I have yo numba?' but the upperclass Victorian version. :D

  • Ha, the face of Mr. Knightley when Emma was talking about Frank Churchhill... Mr. Elton is hilarious and handsome... but creepy.

  • Elton it more creepy here than in the book...

  • "How fortunate that we are...alone."

    SOOO FREAKY

  • this version is EXACTLY how i pictured everything when i was reading the book!!!!

  • Aww, poor Mr. Elton.

  • BBC finally got ahold of the fake snow! It doesn't look god-awful and fake anymore! I LOVE this production! She's so much better than Gwyneth, no hate at Ms. Paltrow, just this one is so much better!

  • @xXxEchosChildxXx I thought I was the ONLY one to ever notice this.

  • @dinovrsrobot Me too! :D

  • eltons ''erm, what are you talking about'' made me laugh

  • Please note that at 9:06 in this episode, there is a latin engraving in the doorway above Mr. Knightley's head. Translated, it loosely means: but always loyal. Or something like that. I can't get an accurate translation unfortunately... Anyways, I just noticed it and couldn't help sharing lol. :)

  • I was reading just this part of the novel and it is very close to the book...

  • Blake Ritson is indeed very handsome, but in 'Emma' he is very Mr Collins-like. I do feel sad for him when Emma refuses him.

  • I was mesmorized by Blake Ritson's portryal (caricuture) of Mr. Elton. He knocks for the carraige to proceed and then says in an insinuating voice, "How brightly they shine". He is thinking of the financial fortune and the higher social status he will acquire in marriage to Emma. It would be scary if it wasn't so funny. The director did a great job in the set-up and lighting of the scene.

  • oh gee...Mr. Elton creeps me out. I would NOT stay in the same carriage with that man, not even if my life would depend on it. >< As for Mr. Knightley... :3 lolol.

  • @Rosaliena88 I would stay in the carriage with him...to knock him on the face! ^^ but i preferred from far alan cumming's elton ('cause i'm obsessed with that actor sorry to say), even if blake's so mucb more gorgeous...

  • umm... what are you talking about?

    hahaha

I couldn't care less if she lives or dies! haha he's a special kind of guy!

  • Mr. Knightley = the sensitive, sensible, dream-guy Gentleman

Mr. Elton = the creepy stalker

  • @MsMangaCollector You are correct.

  • Comment removed

  • The Latin inscription on Mr. Knightley's doorway at 9:02, "sed semper amico", means "but always friendly" (I'm guessing it's probably the second half of some larger motto). I just think that's so apt. :)

  • @aeternamente13 - it means "but always a friend" - LOL - I just had to look it up :)

  • @Shinkansen91 I may be wrong in my original translation (in fact, I'm pretty sure I am at this point), but the "o" ending in "amico" doesn't allow for it to be a direct object. I had guessed an ablative functioning as an adverb, but that doesn't seem right to me now. My guess now is that you can't translate it properly without whatever is before the "but". Either way, there's an "always" and something to do with friendship, which I still think is cool. :)

  • @aeternamente13 :) - definitely cool on the friendship thing

  • Mr. Elton is amazingly creepy in this production.

  • haha! I love how John Knightly responds to his wife walking in the snow, if the carriage goes into the ditch: "With those shoes? I think not!"

  • HOW can she look in those AMAZING EYES and NOT fall in love!!? dont get me wrong i love the end but Mr Elton....;]

  • "For herself, I couldn't care less whether she lives or dies." AHAHAHA!! I love Emma's face when he says that. What a sentiment for a clergyman to express, especially when he's trying to ingratiate himself with the best friend. Love it.

  • How old is Emma supposed to be? Earlier it was 17, now she's saying nearly 20 yrs. Miss Taylor (Mrs. Weston now) took over the care when Emma looked about 2 or 3 maybe? It seems like she may be around 19 and not as young as 17. Can anyone confirm that? I could never make myself read the book past the first chapter or so cause I didn't like it. Although this adaption is clever and funny.

  • @Tygrfawn78 I know - I found the book rather a stickler to read myself. Emma gets a little tiring at times, Miss Bates takes up altogether too much space and there's too many machinations going on. Even Mr. Knightley isn't exactly turn-the-page fascinating.

  • @Tygrfawn78 Miss Taylor was Emma's governess for 17 years, and Emma was a small child when her mother died, so I believe that she is indeed closer to 20 years old. :)

  • @Tygrfawn78 she's 21. There's a lot of (small) time jumps but all the main action happens whilst she's 21.

  • lol I absolutely love John Knightly, he's so funny

  • XD XD XD That look on Emma's face when Mr. Elton is proposing is priceless! :P

  • Wonderful production and adaption of Emma. Absolutely brimming with class, elegance and humor.

  • Mr. Elton you stalker!!! ha ha ha

  • Oh my God how could Emma not have noticed that Elton liked her??!! He was practically hitting on her!!

  • MR. ELTON A CREEPER!!!!!

  • is it just me or its ironic how shes a matchmaker for other people but she never sees it when it comes to her?? lol kinda naive

and wow...most awkward carriage ride ever LMAO

  • Mr. Elton is soooooo irritating!

  • It's funny " let go of my hand Sir and sit over there".

  • Mr. Elton seems so slimy.

  • It kept bugging me who Mrs. Weston was. I knew I recognized her, and suddenly, it hit me that she was the girl who played Alice in 'Last of the Mohicans'.

  • Oh HS... yeah now I recognise her!!

  • LOL at her face at 6:12!!! Priceless!

  • the casting for elton is genius, he's so beautifully tragi-comic.

  • He's fantastic. I also loved him in Mansfield Park... HE WAS utterly gorgeous in that!

  • @fictionalbitch

I AGREE WITH YOU! he really looks handsome!

  • Elton: Surely THAT was obvious.

    Emma: o_O

    haha

  • Ahaha! I love her face at 5:27! Soo Funny!

  • awkward!!!

  • @anne1065

The awkwardness is what makes this story so amazing!!

  • 9:02 "sed semper amico" translated - but always a friend OR for ill will i am confined, but for friends i always stand open

  • thanks for uploading this. the video quality is fantastic.

  • LOL 3:07. XD I love Michael Gambon as the dad.

  • Yes, I think it's funny too...actually, Mrs. Weston and Emma played girls about the same age in Daniel Deronda.

  • I love this version of Emma, but anyone else thinks that mrs. John Knightley seems somehow older than mrs. Weston? Isn`t it a bit weird? But both did a very good job...so who cares in the end?

  • lol. she also has 5 kids. i think I'd look more worn out too. XD

  • ok I know he's supposed to be really lame, but mr elton in this version is gorgeous, just like in the book

  • Okay so the incredibly HOT actor that plays Mr. Elton also played Edmund Bertram in the '99 adaptation of Mansfield Park and here this movie comes out a decade later and is it just me or has he not aged one bit?! I mean it's been ten years and he looks EXACTLY the same! lol Just thought i'd throw that out there...

  • @Burroschick actually the guy that played Mr. Elton in this version played Edmund in the 2007 version of Mansfield Park not the 1999 version. In fact the Edmund from the 1999 version that you mistook for as the guy that is playing Mr. Elton is actually the guy that is playing Mr. Knightly in this movie. So in other words...

Edmund from 1999 Mansfield Park= Mr. Knightly

Edmund from 2007 Mansfield Park= Mr. Elton

    Got it???

  • i KNEW that was the same guy from Mansfield Park!

  • I love Emma's face when Mr. Elton professes his love.

  • OMG it is the Guy from Mansfield Park

  • Knightly in this version was Bertram in the earlier version of Mansfield Park, and Elton in this version was Bertram in the more recent version of Mansfield Park.....

  • @drh20z yes. And that disturbs me a lot

  • Oops, sorry, I see others have pointed this out below.

  • well it doesnt mean i can't repeat it! lol :)

  • does anyone else get the feeling that mr elton has control issues?

  • I really enjoyed this version and thought Romola and JLM did good jobs.More period dramas please bbc.

  • yeah my question is the same? is this the guy from Mansfield park?

  • thanks again so much for posting these vids! :)

  • haha, exactly

apparently I have only Mr. Knightly on my ming

  • lol can't blame you!

  • he was Edmund Bertram in the '99 Mansfield Park

  • Actually he (Blake Ritson) was Edmund Bertram in the 2007 version of Mansfield Park. Johnny Lee Miller (Mr. Knightly) played Edmund Bertram in the 1999 version.

  • @mondrudru and blake ritson, who plays me. elton played edmund bertram in the itv version of mansfield in their jane austin season!

  • the guy who plays Mr. Elton did he also played another character in another Jane Austen -movie?
