@AuroraBorealisAK , I'm a huge fan of Michael J. Fox fan and The Back To The Future film series wouldn't have been as big with Lea Thompson, Christopher Lloyd, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson, Marc McClure, Wendie Jo Sperber, and James Tolkan if Michael J. Fox didn't take the part when actor Eric Stoltz wasn't available.
They actually left one very quick scene in with Stolz and thought no one would catch it. Nobody did until HD and Blu-Ray came......The scene after Doc is shot by the Libyans, where Marty hurls himself into the Delorean, is Stolz. You see the Libyan ready to shoot and then there is about a second of Marty leaping into the car. If you freeze it it sure looks like Stolz and I heard one of the top honchos admitted it, I think it was Gale in some interview.
Lea mentions "The Wild Life" (1984) that featured both her and Eric. It was an attempt at a Ridgemont High Pt.2. Teen 80s comedy, deal. Ironically, even in that, Eric was the straight man to the humor character played by Chris Penn. Wonder what Speilberg based his selection of Stoltz on in the first place.
who else thinks Eric Stoltz would have been great in the movie? normally when i see actors who almost got the lead role in movies i can't picture them doing it. but, not in this case.
Can't believe Eric Stoltz was filmed as Mc Fly for five weeks before Fox finally managed to get his agenda right and agreed to make this movie. Wow imagine if Michael refused definitively the role ? The course of history would have been changed forever !
At this point you will cause a paradox, which would create a chain reaction that could reform the continuity of time and space and that destroy our entire universe! Making the universe collapse into nothing, bringing life to extinction. Making itself into NOTHING!
Actually, Eric Stoltz was already a big time actor and didn't need the part to advance his career. The REAL victim of all this was the guy who originally was gonna play Biff, they recasted him as one of his minions because his starring alongside Marty (the Stoltz version) didn't seem believeable. They later said had they casted Fox originally, he would have kept the role, but instead went to Thomas Wilson. Funny, that may have ruined Cohen's chances for a more high profile career...
They don't mention that Michael J Fox played the lead role in Teen Wolf which was filmed before BTTF, but was not released till after BTTF (because the director was unhappy with the movie [teen wolf] and feared for Fox's career). In fact, Fox was working on both movies back to back, he was finishing teen wolf at the same time he was doing the re-shoots to cut Stoltz out.
This was done in 2008. It wasn't until a month and a half ago that Universal Studios released any. They didn't release any, and kept clamped down on it for 25 years. And in the few clips they released, only one had partial audio.
people who think "coulda, woulda shoulda" are really lame and suck at life . . .
Michael J. Fox was awesome and hilarious in BTTF and nobody could have done it better, they shot it with eric and then re-shot the whole movie cuz it sucked with eric.
@NassimHarameinVedas Actually, they did not re-shoot the whole movie. They were 5 weeks into shooting with Eric before Zemeckis realized that he wasn't as funny as he envisioned Marty McFly to be. That's when they scrapped the footage and started over with MJF.
The role was written for MJF. He wasn't allowed to work on it by the director of Family Ties. Eric Stoltz was a second choice. When they started over, the director of Family Ties lightened up, and let MJF work on it.
There are still shots in the movie with Eric Stoltz. All the DeLorean chase sequences at the mall in the beginning, with the camera at a distance, and the driver not visible. star Eric Stoltz. They figured you couldn't see who was driving, so they kept them in.
@Draknfyre Not to be nitpicky, but I think you meant the executive producer of Family Ties, not the director? Directors of TV show episodes don't have that kind of power.
@toronto1234, Lea Thompson is my Back To The Future babe crush. When I first saw Lea Thompson in the films I fell in love Lea was so cute, with those adorable dimples she has when she smiles. If I meet Lea Thompson in person I will tell her that I had a huge crush on you in 26 years ago in Robert Zemeckis's Back To The Future films.
I love BTTF as it is and I adore MJF, but can you imgaine how horrible that must have been for Eric Stoltz? You work for 5 weeks (why didn´t they realize that sooner?), a huge amount of the budget already spent, and then the powers that be decide to do it all over again because you just don´t fit. That must be hard to recover from.
Seen the footage, so uncanny Stoltz and Fox almost look alike, but Fox got that all American apple pie look, even though in reality he's Canadian.
But hearing they dumped Stoltz after five weeks in, I've lost some respect for Spielberg and what's his name Zemeckis. Proof that Hollywood is indeed a dog eat dog world. Brilliant selection in having Michael, he easily out shined Eric as Marty McFly. But if it didn't happen, we would've gone with Eric, thinking this was his role. Hmm, what if...
@odiemodie1 Well, if you think it's a brilliant selection, and that Fox easily out shined Stoltz as Marty, then why would that cause you to lose respect for Spielberg and Zemeckis? They obviously made the right choice and did what was best for the project they were being paid to deliver.
I meant some, not all respect of Speilberg and Zemeckis, though Zemeckis did say in the footage interview that he being young and having an inflated ego during that time, helped him make that decision to cut Stoltz out. It is just the thought that even the best and up raising stars will get the boot at some period of time...
And YES, it did sucked for Eric, did not seen nor heard of his response yet, bet it will be on the 25th Anniversary date, thrusting him back into the spotlight.
Stoltz is an amazing actor. I bet he would have and did a better job. I also like MJF... but Stoltz isn't the kind of actor you fire 5 weeks in. Spielberg and Zemeckis sucks.
@bohs1984 - The last person I would expect to know their ass from a hole in the ground would be a random jackass on YouTube. Fox was the right choice.
Eric seemed like the logical choice considering the other movies he played. If he could have played Some Kind Of Wonderful, he could have played back To The Future but it might not have been as good. He looks kinda serious in the role, compare SKOW which was more serious, BTTF needs more of a comic touch. That comes from the actors personality, not just their performance. I dont think you would see this kind of role change nowadays with the cost of films though.
Right or wrong. Replacing an actor, director, writers, or whatever after everything is said and done is a DICK move. Bet you they told Eric Stoltz he was fired on a card with a $5 fruit basket.
Eric Stolz is a Awful actor. Not just because of this, I am saying it, but I have seen him in other Movies and he DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO ACT....He always looks like he is working hard at his roles, instead of being the Character...
The Wild Life! The 'sequel' to Fast Times At Ridgemont High? Dick Rude's scene is about all I can remember from that movie. Hollywood most authentic punk.
@Luke5119 Why did Eric Stoltz get replaced by Michael J Fox, not saying it weren't right decision, cos thought Michael J Fox was superb in the role of Marty, just wondered what was behind it.
@MeBenHalpin - Well, they wanted MJF from the start, but he was busy filming Family Ties. When he was finally able to get a break from that, he jumped on board, and I'm guessing they weren't too far into filming Back to the Future, so they just started over. I don't think Stoltz did anything wrong, he just wasn't their first choice.
Eric Stoltz is an in-depth, intense actor with amazing talent. But what Marty McFly needed was more on the side of comedy - soooo many scenes in the movies depended on MJF's great comedic talent and timing - not to mention his ability not to take himself and the character too seriously. I am sorry but I just can't see that with ES, as great as he is.
michael j fox is perfect for the back to the future roll because he can sing, play, the guitar, and skateboad were as eric stolz could not skateboard so they used tony hawk (he is also awsome) to do those scene and he could not play the guitar which is one of the best scenes in BTTF part1
Stolz is a great actor....in some stuff. But this would have been a one hit wonder and box office semi flop without Fox. He is a just a natural and the role was made for him like harrison ford in indian jones.
@magicx3434 I agree as much as like Eric Stoltz, most of the parts i've seen him play tend to be the more serious character, the part of Marty Mcfly suited Michael J Fox better, cos of his natrual comedy talent and timing.
@MrSubliminalfeet66 i would have to see the footage to make that assumption. dont get me wrong, i love this trilogy as far to say that its my favorite trilogy ever. but eric stoltz has a very similar facial structure. and whos to say that a more intense marty is a bad thing... well other than spielberg :P
I like Eric Stoltz but I don't think the movie would have been the same without Michael and I don't think Eric's future roles would have been as versatile if he played Marty
The firing of Eric Stoltz is super unfair, "too intense" my ass. I seriously can't believe that they didn't draw that conclusion from auditions alone. They'll never show his footage because what they claim is bullshit.
They wanted Michael J. Fox from the start, when he became available they just fired Eric Stoltz, end of story, the intense thing is just a cop-out.
@MrsSluty Only the beggining and ending, nothing in the middle was made, The member asked where he could watch it with eric in it, but they NEVER released any of the footage.
They just had this on Fringe. In the other universe, there was a movie theater marquee in the other universe that showed "Back to the Future Starring Eric Stolz"
@tjoceasde YEah I love the "FRINGE" Episode #15 "Peter" from Season 2 they showed in the "other Universe" exist the full version of BACK TO THE FUTURE starring by Eric Stolz... wow
MJF did a great job, but it is supose that Marty is a rocker and MJF do not look pretty much as a rocker or musician, the images of eric Stoltz look more like a rocker to me
the casting from Stoltz to Fox had an effect on the character Biff Tannen, it was originally going to be played by JJ Cohen had Fox been played Marty at the very beginning but Cohen wasn't convincing enough to bully Stoltz and was given to Thomas F. Wilson instead
I dunno. The universe works the way it probably should. Eric was always the indie guy and a great producer/director. He went on to do Mask and wonderful theatre work...Besides, Eric can still work and Michael can't so......?
@kyegirl2001 I agree. This change makes me think of how Stuart Townsend was replaced by Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn after production already started on LOTR. And how Meg Tilly broke her foot after she was chosen to play Constanze in Amadeus, paving the way for Elizabeth Berridge, an acting student who did great in the role.
@smokes2468 hey man they just released the Eric Stoltz footage on the official bttf.com website today. I've been looking for this footage forever as well and Universal just released it. Thought I'd let another Back to the Future fan know. Peace.
Judging from the on-set photos, the Stoltz version of Marty was a goofy hipster. With MJF, the character became the straight man to all the craziness going on around him. And I think that's what the film needed.
Michael J. Fox was BORN to play Marty McFly. I have a feeling if Eric Stoltz played the role Back to the Future would not be the iconic great film it is, but instead more of an 80s cult favorite right next Weird Science or something. Look at the clothes they had Eric Stoltz in, they look awful, it was the worst, most gaudy and cheesiest aspect of the 80s. With Michael they had 80s clothes that were more hip and brand name stylish, and yet don't date too much. MJF also had a certain charm.
its ironic that Stoltz and MJFox look incredibly similar too. I feel sorry for Stoltz. I think Zemeckis should have at least used him in one of his next movies as a gesture. Stoltz never seemed to hit the big heights he should have. MJFox was born for this role though.
MJFox was Marty and always would have been , his comic timing is second to none and he did an amazing job, eric is a red head and that's all I have to say.
Why do they interview these complete nobodies (like Marki Costello, or Scott Bailey)? No one gives a shit about them. If you can't anyone the audience will recognize (apart from a few soap opera fans; yeah, I looked him up), then don't bother.
It wasn't that. MJF was the original choice for Marty from the get-go. But they couldn't work around his schedule for Family Ties, thus they cast Stoltz. However once filming began, it became clear to the director and producers that he simply wasn't right for the role and approached MJF once again. This time, Family Ties producers DID let Michael do the film so long as it didn't interfere with the show. So as a result, MJF filmed BTTF over the weekend and during night shoots.
It's locked up in a vault somewhere. In the special features of the Trilogy DVD box set, there's a short thing about Eric Stoltz and his involvement, (I think it was Robert Zemeckis) says "Yes, we still have the footage, but we will not be releasing it, at least, not anytime soon, out of respect to Eric Stoltz." or something to that effect.
My guess is it won't be around anytime soon, so I wouldn't hold your breath...
The closest I saw of the scrapped footage was a couple of stills taken from unused scenes with Eric wearing McFly's vest and standing next fo Lloyd, also in charcter. The photo(s) are in/on the Extras section of the dvd.
Isn't there more to the story than this? They just thought he wasn't right for the role? I really hope the Stoltz footage makes its way onto a DVD someday; it sure looks like a lot of it was filmed with him.
I actually used to get Eric and Michael confused with each other back in the day. However, as great an actor as Eric is, I don't think he would have been as good at Marty McFly as MJF.
yeah, i mean it sucks that we'll never get to see (at least for a good while) what it would've been like if stoltz was in the movie, but at the same time i think it was probably meant to be that way-- like it was almost certainly for the best in the end (and stoltz was originally their second choice anyway). cause fox was GREAT in that role, and he interacted with the rest of the cast really well, too.

@MeBenHalpin He didn't have the comedic effect for the movie, so they replaced him with Fox.
duderme 1 year ago
@duderme Yeah Eric Stoltz is defintly more serious actor, where's Michael J Fox has the flair for comedy.

Haha, I noticed that in Fringe episode 16 season 2, Eric Stoltz is the star of BttF in an other dimension!
Alexdelannee 1 year ago
Eric Stoltz is an in-depth, intense actor with amazing talent. But what Marty McFly needed was more on the side of comedy - soooo many scenes in the movies depended on MJF's great comedic talent and timing - not to mention his ability not to take himself and the character too seriously. I am sorry but I just can't see that with ES, as great as he is.
0Samaire0 1 year ago 2
Is there ANY film footage of Stoltz's BTTF out there?

i love eric stoltz <3 I LOVE ERIC WE WILL BE MARRIED :)

Eric actually looked like marty until he messed up his hair like that. What the fuck was that?
PSNDonutDude 1 year ago
michael j fox is perfect for the back to the future roll because he can sing, play, the guitar, and skateboad were as eric stolz could not skateboard so they used tony hawk (he is also awsome) to do those scene and he could not play the guitar which is one of the best scenes in BTTF part1

Stolz is a great actor....in some stuff. But this would have been a one hit wonder and box office semi flop without Fox. He is a just a natural and the role was made for him like harrison ford in indian jones.
magicx3434 1 year ago 2
@magicx3434 I agree as much as like Eric Stoltz, most of the parts i've seen him play tend to be the more serious character, the part of Marty Mcfly suited Michael J Fox better, cos of his natrual comedy talent and timing.
MeBenHalpin 1 year ago
@MrSubliminalfeet66 i would have to see the footage to make that assumption. dont get me wrong, i love this trilogy as far to say that its my favorite trilogy ever. but eric stoltz has a very similar facial structure. and whos to say that a more intense marty is a bad thing... well other than spielberg :P
canadianeh24 1 year ago
Marty McFly will always be Michael J. Fox.
BrightWave 1 year ago 4
if you think of it, without Michael J. Fox, the BTTF series wouldn't be as popular and as classic as it is to date.
BryanRiel 1 year ago 3
I like Eric Stoltz but I don't think the movie would have been the same without Michael and I don't think Eric's future roles would have been as versatile if he played Marty
crazyrainbowlover 1 year ago
The firing of Eric Stoltz is super unfair, "too intense" my ass. I seriously can't believe that they didn't draw that conclusion from auditions alone. They'll never show his footage because what they claim is bullshit.
They wanted Michael J. Fox from the start, when he became available they just fired Eric Stoltz, end of story, the intense thing is just a cop-out.

The movie would not have been as good with him.

MJF did a great job, but it is supose that Marty is a rocker and MJF do not look pretty much as a rocker or musician, the images of eric Stoltz look more like a rocker to me
titomoreno 2 years ago
the casting from Stoltz to Fox had an effect on the character Biff Tannen, it was originally going to be played by JJ Cohen had Fox been played Marty at the very beginning but Cohen wasn't convincing enough to bully Stoltz and was given to Thomas F. Wilson instead
ShootStyleZombie 2 years ago
I dunno. The universe works the way it probably should. Eric was always the indie guy and a great producer/director. He went on to do Mask and wonderful theatre work...Besides, Eric can still work and Michael can't so......?
kyegirl2001 2 years ago
@kyegirl2001 I agree. This change makes me think of how Stuart Townsend was replaced by Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn after production already started on LOTR. And how Meg Tilly broke her foot after she was chosen to play Constanze in Amadeus, paving the way for Elizabeth Berridge, an acting student who did great in the role.

I would love to see the uncut production parts of Back to the future with Eric Stoltz in it to really compare him with Michael J Fox.
SteelCity1981 2 years ago 6
Judging from the on-set photos, the Stoltz version of Marty was a goofy hipster. With MJF, the character became the straight man to all the craziness going on around him. And I think that's what the film needed.
jksonny 2 years ago
MJF also had a certain charm.
gothatway09 2 years ago 5
MJF was unique 4 the role!
good 4 zemeckis and spielberg
bvg83 2 years ago 2
its ironic that Stoltz and MJFox look incredibly similar too. I feel sorry for Stoltz. I think Zemeckis should have at least used him in one of his next movies as a gesture. Stoltz never seemed to hit the big heights he should have. MJFox was born for this role though.
mugabesunny 2 years ago
I think it's a question of height, looking at those pictures Stoltz is just too damn big
trailersic 2 years ago
MJFox was Marty and always would have been , his comic timing is second to none and he did an amazing job, eric is a red head and that's all I have to say.
MuskateerGripWeed 2 years ago
Why do they interview these complete nobodies (like Marki Costello, or Scott Bailey)? No one gives a shit about them. If you can't anyone the audience will recognize (apart from a few soap opera fans; yeah, I looked him up), then don't bother.
jamesjohnking 2 years ago 2
Eric was to dramatic....they wanted a little bit of humor to the part
j10stretch 2 years ago
All cause Eric looked to Old to play a 17 year old....WTF?! Hollywood....go figure.
THYCHANIE 2 years ago
It wasn't that. MJF was the original choice for Marty from the get-go. But they couldn't work around his schedule for Family Ties, thus they cast Stoltz. However once filming began, it became clear to the director and producers that he simply wasn't right for the role and approached MJF once again. This time, Family Ties producers DID let Michael do the film so long as it didn't interfere with the show. So as a result, MJF filmed BTTF over the weekend and during night shoots.
Krypton88 2 years ago 3
Where the hell is the footage???
marcoschalesky 2 years ago 4
It's locked up in a vault somewhere. In the special features of the Trilogy DVD box set, there's a short thing about Eric Stoltz and his involvement, (I think it was Robert Zemeckis) says "Yes, we still have the footage, but we will not be releasing it, at least, not anytime soon, out of respect to Eric Stoltz." or something to that effect.
My guess is it won't be around anytime soon, so I wouldn't hold your breath...
Effedup 2 years ago
The closest I saw of the scrapped footage was a couple of stills taken from unused scenes with Eric wearing McFly's vest and standing next fo Lloyd, also in charcter. The photo(s) are in/on the Extras section of the dvd.
diuga1 2 years ago
That is fucking annoying. I only wanted that trilogy DVD for that footage.
rODIUMuk 1 year ago
Isn't there more to the story than this? They just thought he wasn't right for the role? I really hope the Stoltz footage makes its way onto a DVD someday; it sure looks like a lot of it was filmed with him.
feckingbillgates 2 years ago
I actually used to get Eric and Michael confused with each other back in the day. However, as great an actor as Eric is, I don't think he would have been as good at Marty McFly as MJF.
ssudioTVgirl 2 years ago
yeah, i mean it sucks that we'll never get to see (at least for a good while) what it would've been like if stoltz was in the movie, but at the same time i think it was probably meant to be that way-- like it was almost certainly for the best in the end (and stoltz was originally their second choice anyway). cause fox was GREAT in that role, and he interacted with the rest of the cast really well, too.
