Great effort. I can get my game to run but having one major issue with DosBOX. Essentially, the game occassionally crashes after a match. But when you load it up again, the game has been played but the points haven't been added to the table. This is a nightmare as if you win the league by a point, it doesn't recognise it as the comp think there's a game left. Any advice anyone?
@CapitalDan Total guess mate but might be an issue with something in the tmdata.db1 file.....make sure that all the teams are in the correct division and that there isn't a typo - have you deleted or altered any teams in the editor etc......some teams are hard wired into the engine so you have to be wary of what you change and what you don't.

I have Championship Manager 97/98 with an updated player database...Somehow I managed to get most teams with a B-Team(my team has a B-Team which plays in the same division and I nick their players or dump my crap ones) and also Super Players with a technique of 1 come out in the second season.
I used to love this game, used to go on 16 hour sessions back in the day, dont have the time or patience to do that now tho lol, I used to enjoy going Rangers for some reason Negri and van vossen worked an absolute treat upfront you could attract a few decent European free transfers pre season too

@TheScoutingman 96/97 didn't come with the editor - 97/98 is basically exactly the same game but with a few extra features so you might want to consider getting that. As for Windows.......i'm a Mac user so not sure. Googling will give you the answers no doubt ;)

That is a serious amount of work you have done to the database in this game mate . wish i had the patience to do it . i still play this game, but beyond taking the time to add myself to the game i aint done much else with it .
Good day Guys. I have one serious promblem in this game. My favourite team Manchester United. I`m playing during five seasons and I cant to win Premiership and other tournaments such as Champions League. I change in data editor reputation of my favourite team to 20! But it didn`t help me. Last season in Premier League my position 13. I cant believe it!! My problem: Players create nearly 20 22 situations but sometimes it is one goal sometimes no goals. How i can solve my problem???
@nially69 All players currently playing today that were playing in 97/98 had their career history hardwired into the game engine so even if you changed the date of birth for say David Beckham, it would still have him as 22/23 years old. If you add the full stop after the name it's like the game recognises it as a new person.

Wow man, this is unreal! This was my fav champ man game and all the new ones just aren't nowhere as good. Everything you say in the vid about the oldschool ones is bang on. I'm chuffed I found this vid, cant wait to get my hands on a copy of this if poss! Woth this game being old, I've read there's problems playing this champ manager on newer machines, can anyone confirm if this is the case?
@ajwilky I have a relatively new MacBook and not encountered any problems - but I did need the original 97/98 CD AND dosbox downloaded to allow it to run. As for running this on a new PC then I have no idea.......i'm sure it may be harder to run but not impossible. Google will be your friend if you have patience! :)
Looks like a brilliant update! By far the best in the CM/FM series. Your spot on, the simplicity of it makes the game so playable, but it's not too simplistic that you you don't become absorbed, cause you really do! 12 years ago, this game was a bit part of life. It'd be good to get that patch if you have the time. Cheers.

@doobrieuk I'll have a fully updated version out just before the world cup so as soon as that happens i'll post a new video and hopefully at the same time will have uploaded it to file sharing website.......the current one is absolutely not worth sending to anybody as i've changed so much and haven't gone through for duplications/glaring errors etc When it's done i'll post the vid with links.......
HELP! I just downloaded cm 97/98 off the internet, and everything works except this: when I start the game again after playing my saved game file is gone. I had no problems with saving during play, but when I quit the game it seems to delete itself, cause it`s not there the next time I play. Help please anyone??

that is some commitment! i have played this game on and off since it came out when i was 16. i have tried to move on to 01/02 but i didnt like how the stadium pics had gone and the interface in general. is there no way to change the start date in the game, as its still '97 at the top right.

Yep some of the older players in the game still playing today (09/10 season) are hard wired into the game so not putting a full stop at the end means that they will be in the game with their old stats and incorrect age. I wondered what would happen if I put the full stop in one day and hey presto, it worked!
i'm sure a grafix vid would be widely appreciated matey-o. although i'd finally figured it out, i felt a touch daft for it's such a deceptively simple process... the thing is- once you upload the image onto paint or whatever, the quality is seemingly so poor... yet there is nothin' wrong with the image itself, it is merely that ours eyes've been bathed in colour and spoiled by the higher resolution pix of the past 13 years, following cm2.
If I say put these files on another championship manager would they work.
For example, I do not like the new 3D pitches the engine provides, and like you like just a little bit a day and liked the basic format they used to have. Anyway I was wondering if your patch would work on Championship Manager 2003/04 or 01/02. Great Job btw :)
The entire game engine is totally different from other versions of CM so i'd say there are 2 chances of it working on anything else....... slim and none and slims outta' town :)
beautiful job! 97/98 is/was the best version! takes me back to sitting with mates, picking our teams, arguing over transfers, eating junk food. love the interface with the pics in the background, missed that in the newer versions! good work
Thanks mate - yes the pictures make it seem fresh and almost make you turn a blind eye to the fact that the Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup (etc) are still in the game.
such a brilliant update... it's jus' a pity i cannot alter the backgrounds. it is severely impairing my enjoyment o' the game.
tried with abc pic converter and others, can't be sure i've got the method of converting down-pat, but it hasn't worked and i've been trying like mad for days.

Just an update. I got this file today and it's brilliant. Admittedly I've only just started the game but, by and large, all the current info is there and is spot on. Also, he's added a layer of detail by including 'B' squads for English Premier League teams. If you still have access to this disc and don't have the time for the newer versions, this is a must!

I have no idea i'm afraid but i'm sure somebody can help you out - at a guess i'd say you will need the original CD and then a programme such as dosbox or boxer to help load it. A vague answer but google keywords like 'Play old games on XP' etc
I used Dosbox. If you decide to download Dosbox then you will need instructions on what to do. If you add me as a friend I will be more than happy to tell you everyhting you need to know.
Good work, Robert - i'm no expert on Dosbox but i'm pretty sure that you'll need the actual CD to make the game work (or perhaps a mounted file?).......

I'm chuffed I found this vid, cant wait to get my hands on a copy of this if poss! Woth this game being old, I've read there's problems playing this champ manager on newer machines, can anyone confirm if this is the case?

@ajwilky I have a relatively new MacBook and not encountered any problems - but I did need the original 97/98 CD AND dosbox downloaded to allow it to run. As for running this on a new PC then I have no idea.......i'm sure it may be harder to run but not impossible. Google will be your friend if you have patience! :)

Looks like a brilliant update! By far the best in the CM/FM series. Your spot on, the simplicity of it makes the game so playable, but it's not too simplistic that you you don't become absorbed, cause you really do! 12 years ago, this game was a bit part of life. It'd be good to get that patch if you have the time. Cheers.

@doobrieuk I'll have a fully updated version out just before the world cup so as soon as that happens i'll post a new video and hopefully at the same time will have uploaded it to file sharing website.......the current one is absolutely not worth sending to anybody as i've changed so much and haven't gone through for duplications/glaring errors etc When it's done i'll post the vid with links.......

HELP! I just downloaded cm 97/98 off the internet, and everything works except this: when I start the game again after playing my saved game file is gone. I had no problems with saving during play, but when I quit the game it seems to delete itself, cause it`s not there the next time I play. Help please anyone??

The modern day FM is just far too complex, you spend an hour playing just 3-4 games.
This is why i enjoy Playing Football Manager Live, as its runs on a the simplistic method, very similar to this game.
If you could send me the patch and as i would love to run this out. Brilliant. Great Stuff!!

that is some commitment! i have played this game on and off since it came out when i was 16. i have tried to move on to 01/02 but i didnt like how the stadium pics had gone and the interface in general. is there no way to change the start date in the game, as its still '97 at the top right.

I noticed that some of your player names have a full stop at the end of the name. Is this to differentiate between players already in the game?
I find a great way to find stadium pictures is through Google Earth. They are normally large or very large.

Yep some of the older players in the game still playing today (09/10 season) are hard wired into the game so not putting a full stop at the end means that they will be in the game with their old stats and incorrect age. I wondered what would happen if I put the full stop in one day and hey presto, it worked!

i'm sure a grafix vid would be widely appreciated matey-o. although i'd finally figured it out, i felt a touch daft for it's such a deceptively simple process... the thing is- once you upload the image onto paint or whatever, the quality is seemingly so poor... yet there is nothin' wrong with the image itself, it is merely that ours eyes've been bathed in colour and spoiled by the higher resolution pix of the past 13 years, following cm2.

If I say put these files on another championship manager would they work.
For example, I do not like the new 3D pitches the engine provides, and like you like just a little bit a day and liked the basic format they used to have. Anyway I was wondering if your patch would work on Championship Manager 2003/04 or 01/02. Great Job btw :)

The entire game engine is totally different from other versions of CM so i'd say there are 2 chances of it working on anything else....... slim and none and slims outta' town :)

beautiful job! 97/98 is/was the best version! takes me back to sitting with mates, picking our teams, arguing over transfers, eating junk food. love the interface with the pics in the background, missed that in the newer versions! good work

Thanks mate - yes the pictures make it seem fresh and almost make you turn a blind eye to the fact that the Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup (etc) are still in the game.

such a brilliant update... it's jus' a pity i cannot alter the backgrounds. it is severely impairing my enjoyment o' the game.
tried with abc pic converter and others, can't be sure i've got the method of converting down-pat, but it hasn't worked and i've been trying like mad for days.
please help! any luck anybody btw?

you need to convert the graphics from JPEG to .PCX, change the dimensions of the pic and then colour depth.

Just an update. I got this file today and it's brilliant. Admittedly I've only just started the game but, by and large, all the current info is there and is spot on. Also, he's added a layer of detail by including 'B' squads for English Premier League teams. If you still have access to this disc and don't have the time for the newer versions, this is a must!

I might add more reserve teams for Premier League teams - gives the player a better pool of players to choose from then.

I have no idea i'm afraid but i'm sure somebody can help you out - at a guess i'd say you will need the original CD and then a programme such as dosbox or boxer to help load it. A vague answer but google keywords like 'Play old games on XP' etc

Good work, Robert - i'm no expert on Dosbox but i'm pretty sure that you'll need the actual CD to make the game work (or perhaps a mounted file?).......
