No doubt fam, your music captures that true hip hop spirit. It was just off-putting to read what seemed to be another article where a young artist doesn't see the impact of cats from there early years. But I can understand SOHH fragmenting your article... they're good for that. Keep making that right music, I'll be looking out for it.
"You have to remember we're still pretty young, and [the youth] doesn't give a d*mn about what came out five years ago let alone ten years ago. So 20 years ago? I feel like what we're doing is trying to really spread the whole essence of hip-hop, just the knowledge and the wisdom that comes about. Unfortunately we're not #1 EPMD fans, but we're not totally ignorant [to what they did]."
@illant i did that say that. and if you actually listen to our music, you will see that we pay more respects to where hip-hop has come from than any other artists in our age range...not to mention a lot of other stuff in general. you just read a very bad interview where i made jokes that don't translate well to people who've never heard my music. that's all i have to say about that. hope you open your mind and actually listen.
@illant i dont see the disrespect and iam surprised the real tone isnt obviously apparent to you. what hes sayin is that kids his age dont give a damn about previous hiphop - not that he doesnt. And its true. the music of "the newer generation", in my opinion, is such fucking garbage that no one could listen to it if they had 80s or 90s hiphop as a reference. these dudes obviously ARENT in that category and I dont know how a person could miss that if they actually listened to their music.
Hip hop is the only musical genre where younger artists have little or no respect and understanding for the architects. That's why the culture suffers so much and why the music has sucked for the past decade and a half.
This...is hip hop. Everytime i think the art form has died...something like this graces my ears and the love comes rushing right back to me. Cant wait until the album drops, much respect.
@illudr Hip Hop will never die, but we gotta educate so that wack bullshit doesnt slip through the gates. The industry cant kill this in the words of PE "Too Black... Too Strong"
@illudr exactly, sorta reminds me of of how they said, Lupe's kick, push was a needle in a hip hop haystack, this song has that feel and vibe to me, but i don't really like lupe, damn i wish we could see this on T.V.
DMV stand up. Got a lot of love for you cats. Keep doing what your doing. The sounds are refreshing and paying ode to EPMD with the name is fresh. I got all of your releases and will continue to spin your music on my show and out at gigs. Respect!
@FINbball Hiphop as a culture is built on people doing homages and giving odes to other artists and cultural refrences. Personally I dont know of one single artist or group that have not taken another name and made a spin of the name. It's not about if they sound like them or if they know the artist/refrence, its about feeling it.
@AbstractCannon i don't care if it's an ode or some shit. i really think they should have thought about a more original name. The music is tight tho and their ep is very good but they should've took another name. i mean they sound nothing like EPMD
@FINbball of course, we have heard of EPMD...but have the host of 21 & unders that we grew up with heard of them? no. there's a serious gap between the "golden era" hip-hop crowd and the kids who look at Kanye as their savior, and we just aim to be that bridge. We may not sound like EPMD but who do we sound like? (rhetorical question) -- we just want people to do their own shit...but pay homage. i hope this is all the explanation needed. thanks for the support. peace
@elenigmo yeah now when you say it like that it kinda makes sense. And besides, what does the name matter, as long as the music is good. And I gotta say it again, The Basics EP is dope. I was on the plane back from Amsterdam tired as fuck and playing your shit on my mp3. Mad relaxing. And good luck trying to be the bridge between the new and the old. It's a heavy task, I hope you can do it. And respect for getting back at me and explaining this.
Who knew that kids so young had so much soul? The DMV has the most exciting scene in the game right now, and that's coming from a native New Yorker! Peace.
damn this is the shit that you jsut want to close your eyes and let the music take you to another mindset>>> these peeps are gopnna change the hip hop worldd>> thiss is the reaall shit fuck all the sell outss, these youngsters are keepin it real!!!
