I've been looking all over, but I can't find a fertilizer with Calcium Ammonium Nitrate in it. Does anyone know a fertilizer brand that has CAN in it. If there are no easy to get fertilizers that contain it, are there any websites online that sell CAN for cheap.
so.... wikipedia says "Calcium ammonium nitrate, often abbreviated CAN, is a fertilizer which is a blend of about 20%-30% CaCO3 and 70%-80% Ammonium nitrate. It is used as a general plant fertilizer." it sounds like we need more expensive store bought chems, or its time to leach this for ammonium nitrate and do it differently if already bought, tho a 25# bag of calcinite aka Ca(NO3)2 on ebay is 15$ +10$ s&h. still cheap and the guy ships to europe too. still not like you said though
Wikipedia isn't always right. CAN is exactly 7.4% ammonium nitrate, locked in a complex crystal structure of 5Ca(NO3)2.NH4NO3.10H2O. Since all of these ions dissociate in solution, it would be impossible to simply leach the ammonium nitrate from it.
@zhmapper still not just trying to stirr up shit. just saying, CAN isn't what you had posted. example (2) "Trade name of mixture – Calcium ammonium nitrate. Composition: a mixture of ammonium nitrate and dolomite powder" that's from a fertilizer company's safety data sheet. again NOT Ca(NO3)2, as in NONE in there, all nitrate is from AN. quote above from, achema(dot com) /calcium-ammonium-nitrate-n27 but like I said calcium nitrate is cheap on ebay
@zhmapper you can leach b/c most CAN = AN + dolomite. just google "calcium ammonium nitrate materials safety data sheet" 4 of 5 fertilizer co.'s I checked, wikipedia, riteaid and a home science page agree. only one mentioned Ca(NO3)2, one had a 50/50 mix NH4NO3/Mg(No3)2 for all nitrogen, and 3 had MgO added. please update your description or throw in an annotation to let people know your math & chemistry is good, but local CAN sources need to be checked or its a waste of good $
I was running out of character space so on another note regarding acid burns I accidentally contaminated some mineral oil with nitric acid and splashed some on my hotplate. I wiped it up but didnt think to neutralize and some weeks later I didn't know that I had left some reisdual acid and i touched it bare handed and burns appeared some while later which i didn't notice until I put on gloves and they brushed the burns.
Did you build your fumehood yourself? If you did you wouldn't necessarily have to access internal components just do a short vid on the specs what you personally did the kind of fan you used, whether it is epoxy coated, explosion proof etc. I am just looking to find different people's methods for the hood construction. All in all though great vid.
Have you considered a video about your fume hood especially if you built it yourself. On another note, were you not wearing gloves because of the action of sulfuric acid on the gloves melting them to your skin? or was this just something you neglected?
@watchmefall555 Unfortunately I would have to destroy my fume hood to access the fan and other internal components. It's built into the ceiling of my basement.
I do have acid-resistant nitrile gloves, but it's much easier to just wash my hands. Otherwise, I'd go through 50 pairs of gloves trying to handle the camera, etc. I DO use gloves for toxic compounds - common acids aren't particularly toxic, just corrosive. Just make sure to promptly wash up post-exposure. Acid burns aren't instant.
i did h2so4 +kno3 200g. melted together, boiled for 45min, saw hno3 for a few sec on sides of rxn flask then it stopped. checked my iced reciever saw liquid. stopped after was apparent no more was coning out. distilate was water, checked several ways. on cooling the rxn sol crystalized and shot tiny crystals into the air in the rxn flask. snowglobe-ish. did my hno3 get dehydrated too much? I used excess h2so4, constant heat, iced reciever pure kno3 from ebay not stump remover. any thoughts
Very cool. I can't get calcium nitrate domestically so i never tried using it for nitric acid. It's quite interesting to see it demonstrated like this. Awesome stuff!
@apdapd2 You can keep it at >0C to minimize decomposition. At room temperature it will slowly revert to RFNA. You can always vacuum distill it to re-purify.
@iskatelikeanoob Go to a hardware store and read the ingredients on different drain openers. Some will say sulfuric acid. Usually the drain openers that have sulfuric acid in them come as a bottle prepackaged in a clear plastic wrapper.
@HUsoldier171 It depends what you need it for. Sometimes a mixture of sulfuric acid and a nitrate salt like KNO3 can be used for simple nitration reactions.
@HUsoldier171 mix 1 mole kno3 to 4moles concentrated hcl. end up with 1 mole kno3 and 3mol hcl aka aquaregia, and one pesky mole of kcl in sol you can drop some by freezing maby. but ya there is no distill, no sulphite salt, and you can dump your gold scrap in.
@HUsoldier171 Look at ``How to Make Pure Nitric Acid the Easy Way`` made from ScienceHideout. It's a bit confusing cause many things got wrong n instead of redoing the video perfectly he putted this one on YouTube. But, if your following the procedure, you should make it.
@nickalisse1 ive watched it before and i would try but i have no sep funnel for slow addition of the acid and no stir plate to keep it mixing can do you think it would work okay if i added 10 ml at a time and stirred well then allowed it to cool before the next addition?
@HUsoldier171 Sorry, didn't anwser you before. Yes you can had 10ml h2SO4. Just keep it cold. Anyway it wont explode, it's not actually that reactive. You should more keep an eye on the fumes. (From what I experiencied, though) As for the mixing just use a glass rod or if you don't have anyything else use a wooden rod.
@nickalisse1 ive seen videos on how to do that but i such at glassblowing to make a retort out of a testtube and all i have is rubber stoppers vinyl and rubber tubing and i wont have my glassware and hardware order for a week, yep 300 bucks for everything i could think of but i wanted basic stuff first before i get into expnsive ground glass and all glass setups and i got an accurate scale so you should start seeing me putting good vids up(:
@nickalisse1 i watched that one and fealt like the kid din't know what he was doing, didn't stick to the actual math of it, and rambled enough to confuse the shit outa ya. he ended up w/ slush that got filterd once. soo contaminated.
@demnlordd666 Ure right, though think he made this vid, only to show a very simple way to work out some strong acid. As for what he knows or not, think he's a chemistry teatcher or working at a university, something like that. Gotta check it out, to be sure.
@nickalisse1 I had to take a look back at what you commented about, ha ha one of my comments was removed and I don;'t even know what it was, hmmm have to look back on my page. the kid I was talking about kinda had an odd manner of speaking, like almost a lisp or somthing and ended up making a messy pile of nitrate salts and acid. then said if you strained it you have great acid. but it was horrible mess and I saw no way of recovering anything useful there, so.. not a fan

What about sodium hydrogen sulfate? couldnt it be used? its Ca(NO3)2 + Na(HSO4)2 ---> HNO3 + NaCaSO4?

I've invested in quite a lot of WFNA. Should I be worried that it'll decompose in time?
