Hi there. I have a 10 week old puppy that looks just like yours :) His name is Marmaduke. I was wondering, is the ear cropped only on one side??? It looks like it is only the outer part of the ear which is actually cut....BTW nice looking puppy.

As long as some kind of anesthetic or freezing is present, i see absolutely no problem with ear cropping, the organs are inside the head and the inner lobe cartilage is whats used to hear, this is just like cutting the floppy part off your lobe, i prefer to keep the tail though, so my dog can swim properly and i believe it helps with balance too, dogs are their owners property and as long as their fed and treated decently no one should complain....

Thats your opinion, but many others will fault you for having the ears cropped as well. Most well named and reputable show rings are against ear cropping. The only ones who are for it often have bad reputations as well.
I dont need to look it up. I show my dog, cropped ears are accepted in the show ring but no prefered. There ARE some where they prefer cropped but the majority do not. the AKC actually takes off points for cropped. Maybe you should do some research.

Well i am a vet also and there's nothing wrong with cropping ears as long as the owner's take proper precautions and keep the cut clean. People need to stop worrying about pits and cropped ears and start worrying more about circumcising infants. Very few pits have died from cropping but thousands of HUMAN babies have died from circumcising. People need to start getting their priorities straight

@jun25jun well I think it is animal abuse. Its pain that the dog really doesnt need to go through. And its even worse if you adopted them! The dogs went through enough and dont need to go through some dogfighting ritual. Dogfighters are what started the trend of ear cropping. The owners used it so the opposing fighting dog couldnt hold on to there dog and win. Plus pitbulls with natural ears are cute... croped ears are ugley. How would you like someone doing that to you? The dog had no choice!

@planky657 I also would like to add, that i was told by a security dog trainer, they crop the ears so the assailant or intruder cant hold the dog back by its ears, some ppl on farms had it done too when the dog had to fight wolves or badgers....etc but im not saying your wrong here, just trying to maybe let u see certain circumstances in which it might b a good idea....

Also, Ear Cropping is nothing more than severing the flap of the ear that hangs down.
I'll leave it to the rest of you to decide if that is a good thing or not.
It doesn't render the ears useless... They just don't flap down anymore. They will be slightly more sensitive to sound and dirt will be easier to get in.
It is mostly just for show nowadays just as docking tails is.
Would I do it if I had a pit bull? Probably.

Any real animal lover doesn't even acknowledge that sad organization. I always donate to the local SPCA or World Wildlife Fund.
That being said, who chooses what animal abuse is? I consider abuse "harm that is malicious and inflicted solely to injure" the other.
Taking an animal to a vet where it is sedated and cropping his ears hardly constitutes abuse in my book.

There are zero medical reasons for ear crops to be done. Ear cropping is being banned in many countries. It is cruel and unnecessary and the AVMA has started fighting it.

AND PLEASE TELL ME THE MEDICAL REASONS FOR CIRCUMCISION THAT AFFECTS 90% OF THE POPULATION since that's the percentage of babies getting circumcized. Well i am a vet also and there's nothing wrong with cropping ears as long as the owner's take proper precautions and keep the cut clean. People need to stop worrying about pits and cropped ears and start worrying more about circumcising infants. Very few pits have died from cropping but thousands of HUMAN babies have died from circumcising. People need to start getting their priorities straight

I really would prefer to stay on topic. There are other places to talk about circumcision. They are both wrong practices and they should both be stopped. I agree about priorities and people should think of better ways to spend their money (donations to shelters, or to stop circumcision since you mention it) rather than on plastic surgery for dogs!

Although ear cropping may seem cruel... So is circumcision. More and more it is being phased out due to the potential problems.
There is no issue with hygiene. Everybody is expected to clean down there.
Performing circumcision is almost outdated and is rarely performed outside of religious beliefs nowadays.

she got hers done at 10 weeks..they can still do it at a late age, but they won't guarantee it'll stay up..what type of crop were you planning on doing? i suggest doing the battle crop that's the shortest crop..good luck!
