Well, one more vote here for this as one of the greatest pop songs ever. Worth noting that Richard Thompson does a wonderful acoustic cover as a semi-regular part of his set, and it's on at least a couple of his live albums ("Celtschmerz" and "The Chrono Show").
With all due respect to, "Walk Away," and "Pretty Ballerina," on balance from the whole album, this song seems to more completely represent their great sound from a band that disappeared much too quickly.
Sure, it didn't play on the radio, but I'm thinking if it had, it would have been just as successful as any other song.
I have to heartily agree with all the comments I see here: This song is like an open textbook as to how to write and record a PERFECT 1960s pop hit. An unsung masterpiece (no pun intended...). :-) Thanks SO MUCH for posting, rwells47!
Absolute '60s pop perfection! So good it makes ya wanna cry! Why the heck wasn't this also released as a single?! It's got single written all OVER IT!
Thanks for the great upload. How was it this song wasn't a hit? The Left Banke was surely one of the most underrated groups of all time. (This song reminds me a little of Nazz, Todd Rundgren's group from around the same time--not any Nazz song in particular, but more the harmonies, instrumentation and general feel of it. Does anyone else hear a similarity?)
@Galantski This could easily be a NAZZ song, and the song's structure is very much like "Open My Eyes." The Banke were a bit more grounded (somewhat retro actually: I believe they were saddled with the term 'baroque rock.') and less psychedelic than NAZZ were.
@PlateOshrimp499 -- You make some good points, though I don't know that I'd agree the Banke were more retro per se; remember, they came a few years before the Nazz. Your bringing up "Open my Eyes" got me to surf other songs that might be similar and I came up with two: "Forget All About It", which is very similar in harmonies, though the Banke would never have had the power pop drumming or psychedelic effects, and "Not Wrong Long" for the instrumentation.
@James0022ify To add to what Ron said, all three songs were inspired by the same woman. Renee was dating the Left Banke's bass player and band member /songwriter Mike Brown was smitten by her.
nice vid, great song. i first heard an alt version of this by The Dancing Hoods in the 80s. If you can find it, it's slower with minor chords and an introspective vibe
Very cooL that you are showing some major love for the not so popular, well known tunes...So many great tunes go unnoticed in our fast pace lives...and, they deserve recognition..gooD for You...Big Applause..

@MattHatter It was their third single but oddly enough it wasn't a big hit. This song is pop-rock perfection.
