to me life is about experiencing this world, knowing it as much as you can, and also make opportunity for other people to experience it and know it just like you did, and lastly, leave itin some sense better than you meet it.
Here's my take on the meaning of (human) life. We desire knowledge in all forms. Each of us has a interest in different fields of knowledge. Our purpose is to explore and document the universe while creating new ideas from those experiences (creativity in art, music, engineering, etc).
Humans seek purpose and meaning universally. As C.S. Lewis points out, creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for the desire exists. A baby feels hunger; (happy day) there is such a thing as food! Does it make sense that we should have such strong desires when there's nothing in the world that can completely satisfy them?
I don't know if Dean reads the comments, but you should read Ishmael. It's a book about the purpose of our life here and how we are supposed to be the evolutionary trailblazers and lead the way as all other lifeforms evolve towards complexion.
I'm not an authority on this matter either, but my subjective opinion says the following. Ask yourself: What do you want/like to do? Do that as much as possible, as successfully as possible for as long as possible and you've fulfilled your purpose in life.
internets? lol and the meaning of life is to realize God. we are here to enjoy without God, but our original nature is not self centered, it's God centered
Great video! I agree that life can mean anything you want it to mean. Life is like a song that each person has to perform on a stage called Earth. It doesn't really matter what you sing as long as you have fun while you're doing it.
@DeanLeysen Dude, seriously slow down! Your accent and extremely fast-paced speaking made my fall behind for a century. If I space-out just for 5 seconds I already miss a whole lecture. Slooooooooow ittttttt dooooooooooooowwwwwwnnnnn.
Btw, u got a new subscriber -- me. :) You sure have a bright way of looking at life.
There is no real need to give any more opinions on the meaning of life. He pretty much nailed it, there is none, other than you would give to it yourself.
The meaning of life is still just to live, but we have the ability now to figure out what living means to us personally. So really, the meaning of life is as different to each person as their personalities. In my eyes, it's being able to experience everything I want to in my lifetime and not wasting the allotment of time I have. Seize life and all that...
my opinion is that the meaning of life is to become the best version of yourself in every respect..that is, to push yourself to the limits (maybe even stretch your limits) in whatever you are genetically predisposed to do, or otherwise whatever activity tickles your fancy (so long as it is morally permissible, of course)
i believe the meaning of life, is the ability to think/reflect. why? because being able to think allows u to understand the sensation of living, meaning ur able to walk somewhere, touch and you can feel the texture of the object ur rubbing, or when ur contemplating on what u should eat, trying to find the most divine food the would caress ur taste buds.
the condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms, being manifested by growth through metabolism, reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally.
hey dean u know ug krishnamurti? he said all the body wants to do is eat and fuck!! lol nothing else extreme nihilist check him out on youtube his funny
I agreed, and its pretty much my philosophy on meaning a well. However, you say that we pray to a god or the universe to give us meaning, but we need to give ourselves meaning. I let the universe give me my meaning. In other words, whatever happens to be resonating with me, or what I happen to naturally be interested in at the moment I try to let consume my life (in a healthy amount). This basically means, not forcing anything your not actually attracted to because it is the norm.
Why are you Chiren and Reese so smart about physics and other sciences? I really wish I had studied that sort of thing rather than architecture :/ It's such an endless search for knowledge. I still believe you're faster than a neutrino, but slower than a tau. since that Tau Cannon destroyed some serious shit in half-life.

2 of 3 I see conscious life as having developed the ability to convert different forms of energy consciously. Emotions and mental states have evolved just as biological matter. Conscious life can choose to respond to a particular event, ‘Converting Energy’ into something else. Basic example: Boss passing on mental state of being an arse to employees, employees going home and passing on mental state.
1 of 3 The universe is changing from a state of low entropy to a state of high entropy... I see life as another form of energy conversion; nutrients are absorbed by a mother that helps the developing foetus, then baby is born grows and dies its matter being then turned into something else.
stupid questions like that... Why would he have any more survival value than the other? I think he'd be more likely to be ostracized and, possibly literally, teased to death for being such a "weirdo."
Here's a question, why do you think we evolved this desire for there to be meaning in life in the first place? Does it even have survival value?
I mean think about it. You've got two Neanderthals or early Homo Sapiens living their lives, one is focusing on gathering food, staying safe and warm and reproducing (albeit probably not in those terms...). The other is doing those things too (he has to stay alive and all...) but he's spending his time pondering about "meaning" and "reason" and asking
@holyhelo5speak I had the same reflexion... there isn't a lot of flaws in that theory but it's not provable. therefor, we really can't know (for things like God or Universe size or whatever we can guess, think about every single possibility... but i find it difficult to prove that our universe is in a snowball belonging to a hobo - i prefer that theory to the shoe theory btw). Humph...the meaning of life, in my opinion is making your existence worth(getting knowledge, making an impact on society) and making yourself happy, because only then you will be able to say, yes, I have lived my life fully and made my life richer and with sense.
One more thing. Dean do you believe that the Earth and galaxy created ITSELF.? you mean this life is pointless.? No hereafter.? Yes you may have your morals, desires ect the things you said but then everything will go away once you're dead but only you did something positive on earth. We won't keep on reproducing, eventually everything has an end to it(: -Muslim
Many comments in this thread suggest that some seek their meaning by small attempts at self validation by minimizing and disrespecting others. Perhaps. It does support the notion of evolution in that we're not that far away from our animal ancestors. Or not. Most animals are not quite as self-serving as we are. We humans are so very arrogant. Maybe we should ponder whether we were created or evolved for anything other than the sole purpose of manufacturing plastic.
Oh yes, I agree that the meaning of life is not installed by the universe or a creator, but mankind ALWAYS has shown that it searches for a meaning for everything in life, so my opinion is just that knowledge is the best way we can spend our lives, it's the only way we can make ourselves useful for our descendants, because it's the only thing that we can give them. I really hope you read my comments because I, not unlike others, have put a great deal of thinking into them.
- The meaning of life only exists for humans, since we are the only ones who are capable of asking ourselves what it is. The meaning of the lives of all other organisms are merely to procreate and survive, which I think is not really much of a 'meaning' in the true essence of the word.
- That being said, I can only say that the only thing that CAN be the meaning of life (for humans), is that which CHANGES in a human life, or through human evolution, being knowledge.
Our base meaning of life is to search and find a grasp on nature's ways, it's the only thing we can do for our procreation during our short life span, so it's the only thing we should do. When we look upon society, we see that the main purpose is to learn new things, being space related, related to subatomic particles, even religious explanations. All the other professions and activities are merely existing to serve those purposes.
Trade is a way of making life comfortable, as are agriculture etc. Schools and such are a way to pass on already acquired knowledge, so that we can 'stand on the shoulders of giants in our quest for understanding nature'.
This is obviously the opinion of a science-loving person, but I think that's the way it is.
Only meaning to sentient is removing negative, there is still negative behaivor in the world today being displayed by high ranking officials to make money. The only true meaning to life is to remove the negative completly and attain nirvana and what's the point in that? sitting there having multiple orgasms with a happy face non productive lol:) without us the universe feels no suffering
I aggree! Life has no meaning. U can think and have language therefore the question starting to take place. So, yeah, u create your own meaning of life and live your life... To survive. To reduplicating yourself
I have watched almost every video you have ever uploaded and in every one I find your opinions interesting and well thought out, but now for the first time I can say that your views made me re-evaluate mine
@TheHokuable Woah. You yourself are taking a leap of faith. Science is my favourite subject at school and my dad is a Christian scientist. @alphaguitar2 yeah you're partly right and I respect people's views and all, but I still think some people are too dismissive. Don't get me wrong, I love science, though, I just think that some things can be viewed from different points.
@JitteryBen Nothing he said was disrespectful to religion and he doesn't necessarily even owe it any respect so get over yourself. He's just taking an objective view. He said it was a leap of faith, if that means something to you then take that leap of faith. He didn't truly deny the possibility of a God.
I don't believe in God, but I still can't rule out the possibility that an intelligent creator does exists. However, the assumption that God is all loving and knowing and that the bible is his true word is a little bit absurd. If their is a God, I think it just is. Like the sun. It doesn't care, doesn't punish, hasn't done an unkind thing. Treats us just fine. It gives you everything you need to live. The meaning of life for me is to simply exist, to experience the beauty that is the universe.
p.s.: Google "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything" and it'll tell you 42. (Which is a reference to the book titled "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".)
@x3ICEx Apparently it's wrong. (Yeah, I know, how can a fictional randomly-generated number be "wrong"?) It's supposed to be 73. I think. Or a fellow odd number.
I like that there isn't allot of "trolling" in the comments of these videos, people seem to be mature about their arguments, which is nice, aside from a couple of "God does not exist so your argument is false because its false" arguments :P, I personally don't really believe in a God, but that still doesn't make the argument above a valid argument
To me the idea that nothing turned into something that exploded and created life for no reason whatsoever doesn't work out. I believe that there has to be a controlling factor that caused it to happen, why can't it be god. You can call me a religious fanatic, but that's just my 2 cents. People see things in different ways I guess.
@dg14813 Whether you believe God created the universe or not, it had to have come from nothing. Either God created it in a week out of nothing like The Bible says, or it happened from the big bang and all that. Saying that "something exploded and created life" makes it sound rather silly, if you look up what the big bang actually is you'll find it's a much more complex and interesting event than that.
I think the same principle of evolution applies to modern life, just that the 'random mutations' are replaced with social phenomenons. The society that develops the best, survives and influences others. like evolution, but faster. nature works too slowly.
maybe nothing has changed, people just learned how to shave, the razor was the missing link between cavemen and modern day man. as for the walking upright thing, i'm not sure about that, i see plenty of people walking around all hunched over with that lump on their upper back, wait, we are regressing according to our environment
it's difficult to argue that we didn't come from a single cell organism since most men only have one thing on their minds
What would we do if we knew the truth? Evolution or Creation? What would happen if one side was proven somehow, beyond a shadow of a doubt, completely right (forget for a moment that you think your side already has been proven right). Considering the fact that we humans use only a teensy little fraction of the brains that were either created for us or we evolved into - I'm highly skeptical about either argument being absolutely correct.
@ThePldavis You just made my life. I, too, highly doubt that one theory is irrevocably correct. It's not logical...or is it? It's not like we would ever find out.
@PLANTERSVEVO well if you follow Dean's argument, I think you can skip that middle part: the meaning of life is what you want it to mean. That's the conclusion I've always come to, but before this video I'd never considered that "meaning" only became relevant once there existed beings that could reflect on it.
@PLANTERSVEVO yes it means what we want it to mean, some peoples meaning is to help others , some to make money and some to make awesome youtube videos...
@PLANTERSVEVO You are completely correct. The meaning of life is whatever YOU think. So if you think life is to die then thats what you think. So in you're eyes thats correct. No one can tell you otherwise. What i like about what dean talks about is he says his facts and lets you decide what you want to think. He just states what he knows. Sometime he only says one side of the story and never make it look like what he says in opinion.
You state things so elequently! I wish I had your communication skills. I love your videos and I ALWAYS learn something, no matter how much I thought I already knew about the topic. Keep it up you are awesome!
Firstly I got here from OGFurious, which is -hilarious- by the way.
My second question is are you from the Netherlands? Your accent reminds me of Armin van Buuren's.
Lastly, I enjoy philosophy a lot, and it's nice to hear someone discussing this with a strong-standing view, instead of wishy-washily throwing out all the conjectures that exist in the present day.
I hope I can get into your discussions more when I have time, but I do have a question. Do you think viruses are alive?
To be clear, I don't "believe" in anything. there is no way to stand outside of one's own perceptions or to know from whence they originate. Infinity is a Mystery outside the scope of Man's comprehension because Man is not the measure of it. I don't see how this all could have randomly evolved however because where did that come from? The Big Bang theory is about as illogical to me as Genesis is.
I speculate that genetic engineering by extraterrestrials in the past is a better theory than evolution because if circumstances are such to force you to "adapt". then you probably don't have 10,000 years to do it. Also explains why there are sudden jumps. I agree with you that "meaning' is given by us, in the same way that "value" is. The whole world is a projection really.
I always thought that the meaning of life is really pondering the meaning of life. Like you said, that leads to complex thought processes that lead to evolution of intellect and morality, ultimately leading to better us.
@cooleobrad1337 "Cogito ergo sum" - "I think, therefore, I am." That means that only thing you can be 100% sure of is that you exist, that you are. Everything else may be a delusion, or a product of your imagination. I'd say that thinking is the only thing that makes us definitely alive.
@cooleobrad1337 Our existence (of body and spirit). By being able to think, you can be sure that alive. In other words, our existence makes us think, and our thinking makes us exist. I know, it's circular, but it's the best I can come up with, so far. :-)
My meaning of life is to lead a righteous life. We humans tend to having fun, sex, money etc., but making these your meaning of life is, in my opinion, not wise, because these feelings or materials are only temporary and will not avail you in any way. When you get old and sick it will feel like you have lived only a few days.^^
But righteousness will, in one way or another, last forever. At least you die with a clear conscience. And if there is a god he will be pleased with you. :)
That was deep.

RefluxRepresentative 5 months ago
My honest opinion:
- The meaning of life only exists for humans, since we are the only ones who are capable of asking ourselves what it is. The meaning of the lives of all other organisms are merely to procreate and survive, which I think is not really much of a 'meaning' in the true essence of the word.
- That being said, I can only say that the only thing that CAN be the meaning of life (for humans), is that which CHANGES in a human life, or through human evolution, being knowledge.
RefluxRepresentative 5 months ago
Our base meaning of life is to search and find a grasp on nature's ways, it's the only thing we can do for our procreation during our short life span, so it's the only thing we should do. When we look upon society, we see that the main purpose is to learn new things, being space related, related to subatomic particles, even religious explanations. All the other professions and activities are merely existing to serve those purposes.
RefluxRepresentative 5 months ago

I'm a Christian watching science based videos and I find it fascinating, haters ;)
Great video by the way, I've never thought of meaning that way I always just assumed either there is no meaning or it is a meaning known only to God.
madguy3000 5 months ago

TheHokuable 5 months ago
I don't believe in God, but I still can't rule out the possibility that an intelligent creator does exists. However, the assumption that God is all loving and knowing and that the bible is his true word is a little bit absurd. If their is a God, I think it just is. Like the sun. It doesn't care, doesn't punish, hasn't done an unkind thing. Treats us just fine. It gives you everything you need to live. The meaning of life for me is to simply exist, to experience the beauty that is the universe.

@x3ICEx Apparently it's wrong. (Yeah, I know, how can a fictional randomly-generated number be "wrong"?) It's supposed to be 73. I think. Or a fellow odd number.

I like that there isn't allot of "trolling" in the comments of these videos, people seem to be mature about their arguments, which is nice, aside from a couple of "God does not exist so your argument is false because its false" arguments :P, I personally don't really believe in a God, but that still doesn't make the argument above a valid argument
colombo1515 6 months ago
To me the idea that nothing turned into something that exploded and created life for no reason whatsoever doesn't work out. I believe that there has to be a controlling factor that caused it to happen, why can't it be god. You can call me a religious fanatic, but that's just my 2 cents. People see things in different ways I guess.
dg14813 6 months ago
@dg14813 Whether you believe God created the universe or not, it had to have come from nothing. Either God created it in a week out of nothing like The Bible says, or it happened from the big bang and all that. Saying that "something exploded and created life" makes it sound rather silly, if you look up what the big bang actually is you'll find it's a much more complex and interesting event than that.
gamekidillon12 6 months ago
I think the same principle of evolution applies to modern life, just that the 'random mutations' are replaced with social phenomenons. The society that develops the best, survives and influences others. like evolution, but faster. nature works too slowly.

maybe nothing has changed, people just learned how to shave, the razor was the missing link between cavemen and modern day man. as for the walking upright thing, i'm not sure about that, i see plenty of people walking around all hunched over with that lump on their upper back, wait, we are regressing according to our environment
it's difficult to argue that we didn't come from a single cell organism since most men only have one thing on their minds
clownprince88 6 months ago
What would we do if we knew the truth? Evolution or Creation? What would happen if one side was proven somehow, beyond a shadow of a doubt, completely right (forget for a moment that you think your side already has been proven right). Considering the fact that we humans use only a teensy little fraction of the brains that were either created for us or we evolved into - I'm highly skeptical about either argument being absolutely correct.
ThePldavis 6 months ago
@ThePldavis You just made my life. I, too, highly doubt that one theory is irrevocably correct. It's not logical...or is it? It's not like we would ever find out.

so the meaning of life is life itself, which means what we want it to mean?
PLANTERSVEVO 6 months ago 30
@PLANTERSVEVO well if you follow Dean's argument, I think you can skip that middle part: the meaning of life is what you want it to mean. That's the conclusion I've always come to, but before this video I'd never considered that "meaning" only became relevant once there existed beings that could reflect on it.
zantiertasa 6 months ago
@PLANTERSVEVO yes it means what we want it to mean, some peoples meaning is to help others , some to make money and some to make awesome youtube videos...

erab1996 4 months ago in playlist Más vídeos de DeanLeysen
@PLANTERSVEVO You are completely correct. The meaning of life is whatever YOU think. So if you think life is to die then thats what you think. So in you're eyes thats correct. No one can tell you otherwise. What i like about what dean talks about is he says his facts and lets you decide what you want to think. He just states what he knows. Sometime he only says one side of the story and never make it look like what he says in opinion.

Do you think viruses are alive?

xviyo 6 months ago
To be clear, I don't "believe" in anything. there is no way to stand outside of one's own perceptions or to know from whence they originate. Infinity is a Mystery outside the scope of Man's comprehension because Man is not the measure of it. I don't see how this all could have randomly evolved however because where did that come from? The Big Bang theory is about as illogical to me as Genesis is.
s6y9l 6 months ago
I speculate that genetic engineering by extraterrestrials in the past is a better theory than evolution because if circumstances are such to force you to "adapt". then you probably don't have 10,000 years to do it. Also explains why there are sudden jumps. I agree with you that "meaning' is given by us, in the same way that "value" is. The whole world is a projection really.
s6y9l 6 months ago
I always thought that the meaning of life is really pondering the meaning of life. Like you said, that leads to complex thought processes that lead to evolution of intellect and morality, ultimately leading to better us.
ElPresidente707 6 months ago
Hey Dean, what makes us "alive"?
cooleobrad1337 6 months ago
@cooleobrad1337 "Cogito ergo sum" - "I think, therefore, I am." That means that only thing you can be 100% sure of is that you exist, that you are. Everything else may be a delusion, or a product of your imagination. I'd say that thinking is the only thing that makes us definitely alive.
ElPresidente707 6 months ago
@ElPresidente707 what gives us thought?
cooleobrad1337 6 months ago
