@fkd1963 at the risk of generalizing, i think a lot of 'gay mafia' theater critics were lost on the show as a whole were so because they were used to seeing GG in a campy light. Sign of a terrible critic. Which is unfortunate.
@BrochtrupBean Which shows the narrow focus of said critics. . . when you can go from writing a bio on gay porn stars to being a lead critic of the New York Times it shows a steep decline in journalism
When I'm on my deathbed I will think of my Lover and this performance. I was lucky enough to have seen Ms. Ebersol on the stage at the Booth. what a performance.
The song and performance are brilliant, but that 30 second pause at the end as she decides whether to leave or stay is astounding. You already know how the story is going to end, and yet, for a second, you're not absolutely sure she's going to stay. During that intense, silent, heartbreaking pause, Christine Ebersole conveys an entire encyclopedia about the character. And all without saying a word. Absolutely brilliant.
One of those rare opportunities when a role is so perfect in every way for an actor - such a wonderful performance and a hundred times more incredible live.
GG was betrayed by the "gay mafia" of theatre critics who wrote off some of the show as camp and instead drooled over the "rock" score and pretty boys in Spring Awakening. If Matt C. as Jerry came on stage nude the show would still be running :).
@fkd1963 Spring Awakening has SUCH a boring score! Oh my god, I do not understand why everyone raves about it. It's not that great! Mama Who Bore Me and Totally Fucked are good songs. The rest is mediocre in every sense of the word. Grey Gardens, Next to Normal, and The Light in the Piazza are all modern musicals that blow Spring Awakening out of the water in terms of emotional depth and resonance. It is a goddamn crime that Grey Gardens didn't win or tour.
Anyone who was touched by this who has not seen the original Maysles film....Go out and get it....You will laugh and cry even harder....Those ladies were bonified original spectacular. If you dont think so.....you do not appreciate the adaptations of love.
Christine Ebersol has worked so hard for this.....She embodies little Edie....and that leads me to believe...she loved her....as I did......Brava!!!
Thank you so much for including the moments immediately before and after the song itself. This tape captures so much of the power and heartbreak of the theatrical performance. As gmr2broadway posted earlier, those of us who saw this "live" were indeed privileged. An extraordinary score - and an extraordinary performer. Too bad GG didn't achieve the longer run it deserved.
This is a master class in communicating a song. Ebersole completely inhabited this role. She never got in the way of the story and let the music speak for itself. Absolutely brilliant! No wonder she won the Tony Award!
I saw this from the 3rd row to the left right under her as she sang this. The pause before she says "Coming..." was so tense, we all in the theatre sat there riveted in silence without so much as one single breath. I remember looking up at her contorted face as she said "Coming.." and my heart just broke; the ENTIRE audience let out a collective groan at the same time. Ms Ebersole if you ever read these comments -- you are amazing in your craft. Thank you!
Thankyou so, so much for allowing me to witness this incredible performance in the context it was originally done. It's even more heartbreaking and brilliant than I'd imagined.
What I love so much about the musical is how it fleshed out sporadic glimpses of self reflection that you witness in the doc . We never actually see the real Little Edie have this kind of full epiphany about her life, but anyone who is an ardent GG fan knows she was capable of it. C.Ebersole's performance(especially in this number) nails that mental pain so organically it makes me cry for the real Little E. Guess that's what great theatre is about.
I had the honor of seeing this front row on the right (on my birthday) and i was BLOWN AWAY BY THIS SONG...it was so amazing and it still brings tears to my eyes.... Mrs.Ebersole gives me chills when I listen tot
Don't get me wrong i feel terrible for her but what really gets me is when bug edie sat "All alone now..." I can see why she put herself through this. That's true love. They were the pair of the century.
Let's not feel too sorry for Little Edie...she was "liberated" when Mother passed away, and ended up with a pretty nice life in Bal Harbor, Florida...
Amazing a thousand times over. I have tears welled up over this. Now I see why she was hailed for this role. If only had i known about it when it was on broadway....I would've traveled just to see it. Oh God - greatness.
my entire friday night has consisted of grey gardens memoraBEALEia, this clip is the highlight, so deep so emotional. i cannot contain tears. GOSH!

the gay mafia of theatre critics shot its collective load all over Spring Awakening cause it had a cast of cute boys and a cute composer.

"Art is where you find it"
After watching this show,I will always consider it found.
I like to think that if Little Edie had seen this, she would have laughed and cried, And when the performance was over, she would have said,
"That was absolutely terrific!"
"Now you sit here and let me do the show for you Miss Ebersole...Darling".
I will never forget this piece and it has made me more than I was.
Thank You!!!
