Oriental is a word that is meant to describe objects or things not people.
An acceptable example would be: Oriental art.
When talking about people it is correct to say Asian.

Being Chinese myself, I don't appreciate the "dog" analogy and do feel certain discomfort about it, but considering this person's track record I see it more as a reflection of his coarseness in language uses rather than any ill-intention.

I love this and see it so often. The problem with the term Oriental is that it is ambiguous (it's not particularly hateful unless used by guys like Rob Ford in this kind of context). Edward Said decries the term, not least, because of the Western tendency to lump everyone east of Anatolia (Turkey) into the same boat. The term 'Asian' doesn't fix this at all. It's still a completely useless moniker that can refer to Pakistanis as easily as it does Siberian Ewenki to Uzbeks to Hmong, Ukrainians..

An acceptable example would be: Oriental art.
When talking about people it is correct to say Asian.
His apology was not heart felt. He spent more time trying to justify his mistake than being humble and trying to learn from it. He cares more about protecting his ego than about offending people. I know plenty of Asians but none that sleep beside machines or remind me of dogs. His 'compliment' was offensive.
