I was a Red-Letter Christian long before I learned there was a religious-political movement named as such. I must say that I'm not the biggest fan of Tony Campolo, I feel he's politicized RLC's and used this to play the same games the American Religious Right has been playing for decades.
RLC is not so much about fearing God as it is emulating Christ, hence, being Christian. Christ gave us work to do, and RLC's seek to get it done.

I don't think Tony Campolo would say to read ONLY the red letters, at least I hope not. Jesus words come to us from the full Biblical narrative, I'm not fond of Christians being critical of other Christians, though I suppose that comment in and of itself is a Christian being critical of a critical Christian. The video didn't make sense. Christians claim to follow Christ. It makes sense to give much more weight to the words he actually spoke when he was on earth. And it makes sense to not necessarily ignore but de-emphasize the commentary from the people who came later. The red letters ARE more important.
I am not a Christian, I am agnostic, but I support the red-letter Christian movement. For long I've been against the notion that praying alone will solve the world's problems. I've long been against Evangelism, and equate them as the Christian version of the Taliban. They have long manipulated the word of God for their own selfish interests of putting the religious right over human rights and equality, prioritizing the word of God over feeding the hungry and curing the sick.

Christians love to marginalize people like Tony saying they believe a social gospel or whatever. Truth is Jesus didn't preach about social justice, but he lived it. However, I don't think it's right or prudent to discard him just because his ministry is imperfect. I am a Red Letter Christian, and I don't understand why you make a big deal about a movement that hopes to examplify the quotations of Jesus Christ in our lives. Using the bible as an excuse to bring down a movement perhaps you don't yet understand is very counter productive in spreading the gospel.
The movement isn't about Tony Campolo and what he believes. It is about the idea he started that Christians should use the quotations of Jesus as a starting point in their faith. I have read some of his ideas and I didn't find any thing contradictory to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Infact most analogies that Jesus spoke of were you can call yourself a follower but go to hell because: ONE you didn't do good or TWO you didn't obey the will of God. I even typed good and hell in the NIV online bible and no verses in the NT came up. I think you need to be a little more specific so I can varify your claim.

I find that to be the contrary as Jesus knew exactly how long he had to speak his ministry and what he was going to say. He even said that all the laws and prophecies hinge on two commandments found in Math 22: 36. If the OT can be summed up in these great commandments. To even claim Red letter Christianity is summed up in these two commandments would also be correct.

In my faith, preaching about a new kingdom and reformation was being a Christian was all about. In reality RLC is Christianity. The name exist today to show how far gone American Culture Christianity a.k.a ACC, has taken the religion. Making the words of Christ your core belief is essential.

i would think tony wouldve read the bible in its entirety, and saw that for his experiences in his life(because we all experience a difference side of God) the red letters of the bible were most relevant to the world we live in. in a society where religion is so congested with rules that we no longer have use for because weve been so overstimulated, spirituality starts to mean something separate than religion.

I can see your point, hetgow, about the danger of false teaching but with Red Letter Christians such as Tony Campolo it appears, to me, to be one of emphasis as opposed to different doctrine. I am sure that Campolo accepts the inspiration of the OT and Jesus's harder teachings. If you are concerned that he might be misleading people why not email him and give him a chance to defend his position?
Campolo is more concerned about social change than things that have eternal consequences. Its not a difference doctrine its ignoring major commands of the bible & implying that only the red portions of the word is important, when in fact the whole bible is important. BTW many have emailed & confronted Campolo but his "social change" is more important than the all of scripture.
I recently heard Campolo talking on the importance of combining sharing the gospel with social change and I mainly agreed with him. I think God specifically calls people to tackle current issues, eg William Wilberforce, as a platform for sharing the gospel. Although I agree that a social gospel without an eternal dimension is wasteful compassion for human suffering is close to God's heart.
As a Christian I have to accept the doctrine of hell and that Jesus mentioned it rather a lot but it is interesting that he spoke of it almost exclusively to the religious hypocrites of his day. I also accept the old testament although I really struggle to see how stoning women caught in adultery (not men) is applicable today. Jesus's words 'He who is without sin cast the first stone' is a more feesible starting point - even for me.
Exactally! when Jesus came to earth in human form he created a new covenant. It was a fufilment of the old law. That it what we are living under. Jesus preached grace and love as a modle for how we should act. Injustice and hipocricy made him mad. He lashed out at the Pharicies and overturned moneychangers tables because of that. Jesus was real. He wasnt always talking about the light and fluffy side of things, but he was real. He modled what life should be for us.

I was a Red-Letter Christian long before I learned there was a religious-political movement named as such. I must say that I'm not the biggest fan of Tony Campolo, I feel he's politicized RLC's and used this to play the same games the American Religious Right has been playing for decades.
RLC is not so much about fearing God as it is emulating Christ, hence, being Christian. Christ gave us work to do, and RLC's seek to get it done.

This video states that humanity is wicked and that Jesus is motivated by anger and hatred of sin. Makes you wonder what motivated Jesus to die for our sins? I assume this post would proclaim hatred (of sin, of course).
So which God is the real God? The one who would destroy Sodom or the one who would let a woman caught in adultery go unpunished?
It's interesting to note that without Jesus there would be no Bible. There would still be the Torah, but no Bible as we know it today.

I don't think Tony Campolo would say to read ONLY the red letters, at least I hope not. Jesus words come to us from the full Biblical narrative, I'm not fond of Christians being critical of other Christians, though I suppose that comment in and of itself is a Christian being critical of a critical Christian. I would say the red letter Christians have a terrific starting point to begin engaging the Biblical narrative. My two cents, probably only worth 1 cent but just a thought.

The video didn't make sense. Christians claim to follow Christ. It makes sense to give much more weight to the words he actually spoke when he was on earth. And it makes sense to not necessarily ignore but de-emphasize the commentary from the people who came later. The red letters ARE more important.

I am not a Christian, I am agnostic, but I support the red-letter Christian movement. For long I've been against the notion that praying alone will solve the world's problems. I've long been against Evangelism, and equate them as the Christian version of the Taliban. They have long manipulated the word of God for their own selfish interests of putting the religious right over human rights and equality, prioritizing the word of God over feeding the hungry and curing the sick.

Christians love to marginalize people like Tony saying they believe a social gospel or whatever. Truth is Jesus didn't preach about social justice, but he lived it. It is people like many Christians I know that would be trying to stone the woman found in adultery that Jesus forgave, because that's "the Law". Love > the Law, it is Christ's love for us that saves us. We are called to love the poor and widows above all else. Jesus said himself what we do to the least of these is what we do to Him.

Listen guys, Tony's message is by no means perfect. "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." However, I don't think it's right or prudent to discard him just because his ministry is imperfect. The same can be said about any high-profile pastor, be it Jack Van Impe, or Billy Graham or Campolo.
Campolo is 100% correct about one thing though; Our Savior, our friend, our mentor Christ Jesus is NOT a democrat or a republican. He's too awesome to be bound by man-made criteria

The Bible teaches that ALL will confess Jesus as lord, and the word used to describe this can not mean a forced confession but a truly felt one. And can anybody truly confess Jesus as Lord minus the Holy Spirit. SO i guess everybody will recieve the Holy Spirit.

The movement isn't about Tony Campolo and what he believes. It is about the idea he started that Christians should use the quotations of Jesus as a starting point in their faith. I have read some of his ideas and I didn't find any thing contradictory to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

@ckacres I never read in scripture where you can do good and still go to hell. Infact most analogies that Jesus spoke of were you can call yourself a follower but go to hell because: ONE you didn't do good or TWO you didn't obey the will of God. I even typed good and hell in the NIV online bible and no verses in the NT came up. I think you need to be a little more specific so I can varify your claim.

I find that to be the contrary as Jesus knew exactly how long he had to speak his ministry and what he was going to say. He even said that all the laws and prophecies hinge on two commandments found in Math 22: 36. If the OT can be summed up in these great commandments. To even claim Red letter Christianity is summed up in these two commandments would also be correct.

In my faith, preaching about a new kingdom and reformation was being a Christian was all about. In reality RLC is Christianity. The name exist today to show how far gone American Culture Christianity a.k.a ACC, has taken the religion. Making the words of Christ your core belief is essential.

Do you realize that no clergy church in this country came forward to thank or praise the 2 soldiers that risked their own lives to save children women babies from massacre in My Lai, it took 30 yrs. for anyone to recognize what Hero's these men were. My Lai was a small villiage in Vietnam where our troops were allowed to go in and shoot everything that moved. Calley in charge was one of many soldiers doing the killing raping, of nearly 400 babies little girls, old men and women, they were piled up like dogs and shot, he was tried and sentenced to life for murder, but served less that 3 1/2yrs. house arrest. These human lives were taken, no punishment was judged.

Oh no... you're back... The idea of Hell is as old as Christianity, which HISTORICALLY began at around 30-40 AD and not all Christians belief in it anyways. I happen to be a Universalist. Not only that, but The Old Testment does mention hell, just as the devil's domain, not a place for Human souls, the idea then changed to a place where souls are extended itno as punishment, either for eternity or until "the end." Actually, Buddhists didn't touch the area until much much later. Sara Imas was the first Buddhist immigrant to Israel. That was 1991. Jews though, had come over to China around 1163 A.D., a thousand or so years AFTER the time of Jesus. That's according to historical records, not thoeries made up by a bunch of old guys.

So much change shows clear signs of Darwin's theory of evolution...For the Bible must evolve as do we, to keep up with the times and not be left behind with other writings of lesser and greater pieces of work...I certainly don't consider it a great book, but it's lasted so long I can't criticize it's potency! It's like a venom that kills you if you get to close...But too close to what?...hmm...oh I know, I know!! :D The truth!!

yes the bible is evolving, ever notice the old testement is full of a "vengeful god, a god of wrath and judgement, better be carful or he will kick your ass with floods, storms, fury? then in the new testement he was full of forgiveness, sacrificed his only son, loves you uncondtionally, weeping crying, compassion, etc. ? hmmm now thats real evolution. Like if you beat your kids for being naughty then they grow up and your realize you cant beat them anymore, so you say I love you, :)

God calls himself "'A' God of Wrath"...As in it leads the mind to believe that their are others...because If I only believed in one, he would be 'the' "God" and NOT "a" God...I'm not sure...Maybe you can clear that up for me:P I'm so confused by the Bible and this man now tells me there is yet another edited copy of the book? I HAVEN'T EVEN FINISHED THE FIRST ONE!! :(

Why are you so pretentious?. Its all about love. If all we are doing is seeking personal salvation, than doesn't that mean we are being selfish? All that these kind of messages do is create the "Sunday Christian" Read Matthew 22:37-40.

Yes, I agree. However you bring up the issue of Homosexuals. They are sinners just like all of us. The way to be a Christian is not "Be Like Jesus" by helping the poor. It means REPENT. Yes. If Homosexuals cling to their Sin, and do not Repent they will go to hell, just like Liars, Just like Adulters and any other sinner who clings to sin more then God.

Just like you can not reason with a child throwing a tantram, you have to threaten "Wrath", but then they get older and you cant whip their ass, you have to tell them, I love you:) so maybe they will honor you and listen to you, but that dont always work either, hence the bible is based on the same enigma of parent child relationships. Please do not let yourself be deceived!! We have our bibles and thank God we are free to read them and use them, so use it wisely and see what other "gospels" people are trying to introduce into the world and compare what the bible says!

i would think tony wouldve read the bible in its entirety, and saw that for his experiences in his life(because we all experience a difference side of God) the red letters of the bible were most relevant to the world we live in. in a society where religion is so congested with rules that we no longer have use for because weve been so overstimulated, spirituality starts to mean something separate than religion.

Jesus died for our sin, not for unifying false teachings & biblical doctrine. The NT is filled with "public" warnings against false teachings & teachers; Jesus Himself made very public warnings & rebukes. Just remember that unity never replaces solid biblical doctrine. Peace

I can see your point, hetgow, about the danger of false teaching but with Red Letter Christians such as Tony Campolo it appears, to me, to be one of emphasis as opposed to different doctrine. I am sure that Campolo accepts the inspiration of the OT and Jesus's harder teachings. If you are concerned that he might be misleading people why not email him and give him a chance to defend his position?

Campolo is more concerned about social change than things that have eternal consequences. Its not a difference doctrine its ignoring major commands of the bible & implying that only the red portions of the word is important, when in fact the whole bible is important. BTW many have emailed & confronted Campolo but his "social change" is more important than the all of scripture.

I recently heard Campolo talking on the importance of combining sharing the gospel with social change and I mainly agreed with him. I think God specifically calls people to tackle current issues, eg William Wilberforce, as a platform for sharing the gospel. Although I agree that a social gospel without an eternal dimension is wasteful compassion for human suffering is close to God's heart.

As a Christian I have to accept the doctrine of hell and that Jesus mentioned it rather a lot but it is interesting that he spoke of it almost exclusively to the religious hypocrites of his day. I also accept the old testament although I really struggle to see how stoning women caught in adultery (not men) is applicable today. Jesus's words 'He who is without sin cast the first stone' is a more feesible starting point - even for me.

Exactally! when Jesus came to earth in human form he created a new covenant. It was a fufilment of the old law. That it what we are living under. Jesus preached grace and love as a modle for how we should act. Injustice and hipocricy made him mad. He lashed out at the Pharicies and overturned moneychangers tables because of that. Jesus was real. He wasnt always talking about the light and fluffy side of things, but he was real. He modled what life should be for us.
