This pororoca wave was covered in a great video on the Discovery channel. At a certain time of the year (spring) I think these waves make there way up the delta of the Amazon River. Surfers come there every year and they can surf for miles upstream on this strange act of nature.

The water is black but the river is NOT dirty!

The only reason its like that is because of the leaves in the bottom. If the river was as dirty as you think then it certainly wouldn't have that many species. Cmon ppl! XD

BTW the name of the river is Rio Negro, portuguese for Black River, so don't worry about the water. Can't say the same about the Piranhas, snakes and crocs though, lol.

the only thing you have to watch out for is the bull sharks that come up the river; in 1996 we surfed pororoca and my buddy was taking a breather body surfing before standing up again etc, and as he paddled he got bitten really bad, resulted in something like 82 stitches in his left arm; we had no clue what the shark was doing it must have been curious.

It is the encounter of two large, wide amazon rivers that happens once a year where theey rush to meet the sea...its is a deep and weird water but the waves are strong and very very long. Great surfing...

This is not the longest or the biggest tidal bore. Eduardo bage and Patrick Audoy surfed the Silver Dragon in China for 17km last October. But it's not accredited by Guinness, so the official record still belongs to sergio Laus on the Mearim pororoca..respect to you guys though, cool vid.

If this tidal bore is anything like the others, there will be one wave

(or wave train, like in this vid) flowing upriver once with every tide for a few days either side of the spring tides on most months.
