Its similar to classical music in the sense that there are certain aspects that you need to listen for in order to find validity in it. But don't you think that if Black metal bands persist on all of the *look* then that can turn off future listeners that may have a twinge of interest? Because alot of the costuming etc. is hokey. My connection to Metal expands to the various eras of Megadeth/Metallica.. more Mustaine then anything in this area of music.

I think bands would benefit more if they do less corpsepaint as you say.

I guess Black Metal doesn't need to make sense.. especially since there is no lyrical quality or sound for that matter. and if the listener has to dig that deeply to finally *get it* Alot of work.. @gillybgoode The Stones are not really around anymore. They are living off their hype, just like you say that black metal does. They release an album every 8 years or so, then do a Greatest Hits tour and get rich. But that's not what black metal is about. Actually, the very best black metal bands do not perform live (e.g. Darkthrone, Dødsengel, Burzum, early Taake, Forefather), and many of those who do have no relation to the activities that happened here in Norway in the 90s. (e.g. Enslaved)

I did see Zakk in concert a few years ago... he rocked it! Plus he did a ballad on accoustic. According to an interview, he likes to chill out at the end of the day with a glass of wine and listen to Marvin Gaye,.. Yeah he can jam Metal, but he is a very diversified musician. It's a shame he got ill.
