Songs like junkhead, down in a hole and nutshell just to name a few should be retired because when they are sang now it's without the real emotion Layne sang them with. Just my opinon.

If Layne was still alive and had got fired from AIC for his drug problems, we'd just think he was a junkie chump that fucked up our favorite band. It's only because he's dead that we worship him the way we do. I think Will's just as good in a totally different way and I can't relate to being butthurt that AIC wants to move forward and write new music because so far it's been incredibly good music with or without Layne.
As a vocalist myself I can appreciate this is probably one of the most difficult songs in AIC's catalogue vocals wise. Duvall holds his notes well for this one. Good man!
I tried to give DuVall a shot, but no, this just doesn't work for me. The new AIC should leave Layne's shoes unfilled and just do new stuff. Cantrell may have written majority of the tracks, but it was Layne's voice that made them unique masterpieces.

Jerry Cantrell wrote most of Alice in Chains' songs, so why shouldn't they be allowed to play under the old name? Sure, Layne wrote this one, but what's the big deal? Same with Pearl Jam - they all write a few songs each album.

I also would like to add that of the 7 Grammy nominations that AIC has received, Layne wrote the lyrics for 5 of them, Man in the Box, Dirt, I Stay Away, Again, and Get Born Again....from Layne's era, Grind was the only Grammy nominated song from AIC written by Jerry. Layne was no slouch when it came to writing lyrics...let's give the man credit where credit is due....
and all you have to do is look at any rolling stone interview.. jerry is labled as the primary song writer.. even on his first solo album it says "co founder and primary songwriter of alice in chains" on a big sticker on the front... i will stick with whats fact.. you can live in fantasy.

With all due respect...you are mistaken on the list of songs that you say Cantrell wrote. Layne Staley wrote the lyrics to Sickman, Junkhead, Godsmack, Dirt, and co- wrote Rain When I Die. On "Music Bank" alone, Layne is listed as the lyric writer for 26 songs. That means that Cantrell couldn't have written 75% of the lyrics. I do agree that AIC has the right to go on, but you have to get your facts straight to have a valid argument.

I think Will's just as good in a totally different way and I can't relate to being butthurt that AIC wants to move forward and write new music because so far it's been incredibly good music with or without Layne.

As a vocalist myself I can appreciate this is probably one of the most difficult songs in AIC's catalogue vocals wise. Duvall holds his notes well for this one. Good man!

I tried to give DuVall a shot, but no, this just doesn't work for me. The new AIC should leave Layne's shoes unfilled and just do new stuff. Cantrell may have written majority of the tracks, but it was Layne's voice that made them unique masterpieces.

@pearljam5877 Yes, I would be cool with that. Why shouldn't they? The difference between AiC/Pearl Jam and Nirvana was that Kurt wrote all of Nirvana's songs (except for one B-side). Jerry Cantrell wrote most of Alice in Chains' songs, so why shouldn't they be allowed to play under the old name? Sure, Layne wrote this one, but what's the big deal? Same with Pearl Jam - they all write a few songs each album.

Fuck all this Duvall Staley debating! Alice In Chains were always fuckin sick, and THEY STLL ARE!! Saw them live 8 days ago, and it was fucking amazing!! Probably the best concert I've ever seen. Saw them in 93 and the sound men ruined it. This time the sound was great though

I'm gonna go see them next week. I didn't get to see them when Layne was alive. This dude is alright. I give him credit for taking the job. He knew going in that a lot of people were going to hate on him. it sucks I'll never see Staley live but Cantrell, Kinney and Inez are bad ass musicians. A band is more than the singer (though for most people he/she is the band).

But let me tell you there is no need, since you already have the answers from Bubblebeanz anyway. Great song btw, and a good performance fron the New Alice. I'm sure we all miss Layne, the guys in the band do that a lot, but I think it's great that they go on, and they also have the blessing from Layne's mum. Rock on Alice!!!

I also would like to add that of the 7 Grammy nominations that AIC has received, Layne wrote the lyrics for 5 of them, Man in the Box, Dirt, I Stay Away, Again, and Get Born Again....from Layne's era, Grind was the only Grammy nominated song from AIC written by Jerry. Layne was no slouch when it came to writing lyrics...let's give the man credit where credit is due....

RS doesn't write AIC's track listing. Layne wrote the lyrics to the following songs on Dirt. Drug abuse (specifically heroin) is the most explored subject, with "Hate to Feel", "Dirt", "God Smack", "Sickman", "Angry Chair", and "Junkhead" all dedicated to the subject. Staley later expressed regret about his lyrical content, explaining, "I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them...I didn't want my fans to think that heroin was cool.

This is the collectives band, Not just Laynes, Layne was one of the greatest singers in rock and roll history, But he wasn't the entire band. It took the band along time to carry on, and they are doing it as a tribute to Layne. Be thankful that this can even happy, especially with a great lyricist such as willam duvall, he pulls it off. Rest in Peace Layne, You'll never be replaced, But you will always be remembered, Forever and always.

For fuck's sake, who do you people think you are? Yes, it's true: William Duvall is, and never will be as good as Layne Staley. Every dedicated Alice in Chains fan knows that. But why do you all feel a necessity to point out and debate that obvious fact. Duvall isn't going to leave the band just because you people think he doesn't match the original. Perhaps try accepting it as a fact. Duvall is Alice in Chains' new lead vocalist, and will continue to be. Try and look at the positives in that.

The guitar bass and drum would all still sound the same . But the vocals you deffinitly do notice the change . It was Laynes voice that gave their songs the kick . Next , most of the lyrics and stuff were written by Layne . They were his songs and to have somebody else try to replace him and cover his songs is quite disrespectful .

With all due respect...you are mistaken on the list of songs that you say Cantrell wrote. Layne Staley wrote the lyrics to Sickman, Junkhead, Godsmack, Dirt, and co- wrote Rain When I Die. On "Music Bank" alone, Layne is listed as the lyric writer for 26 songs. That means that Cantrell couldn't have written 75% of the lyrics. I do agree that AIC has the right to go on, but you have to get your facts straight to have a valid argument.

Jerry Cantrell is the music writer, Layne Staley is the lyric writer on all the songs that I listed. If only Jerry is listed he wrote the whole song, if Layne is listed, he wrote the whole song, if they are both listed Jerry wrote the music, and Layne wrote the lyrics. Dirt: Another special one for me. That "bendy" thing is part of who I am as a player, but this one accentuates that. The words Layne put to it were so heavy. Rain When I Die: It is one of the few songs that Layne and I wrote together.
