Why make a record attempt at a small venue in Belgium, with only pacesetters and no competition ? A great day for american distance running ? Really ? This run is Webb in a nutshell.. Excellent times when there's nothing on the line. Webb's been a no show at the World's and at the Olympics, The American 1500/miler that can run heats and medal( 3rd at the 2011 WC, in hot/humid weather), the stud to look for in London, is Matt Centrowitz !
I wouldnt say the American record sucks balls. However, it can definitely be improved. The bottom line is that the mile is not run very often. I think anyone who has run under 3:30 in the 1500 can run under 3:46 for the mile. Sydnee Maree, Seb Coe, and Steve Cram could have definitely run much faster to name a few for their mile PR's. Its never easy though setting up the perfect conditions and pacing for the mile. Cheers to Alan Webb for raising the bar here!! He was a beast in his prime!!
Impresive but still just an American record. He just can't compete with the big names though. His career is a bit of a wate of talent. Bad coaching and injury prone.
@44514boy could be haha well he did say "ghost of steve scott" a lot in the video so it might have been misleading but he was only talking about the pace steve scott ran when he set the American record not that steve scott was actually dead
I totally agree that this was the perfect time for Alan Webb to break the American Record for the mile. The mile is one of the only recognized "non-metric" distance races. I think Alan Webb's coach claimed that other track meets were not wanting to run the mile, only the 1500 meters. It was good that they were able to set up a small meet of their own. In fact, a lot of world records are run at low key meets and not like the Olympics or other big meets.

Not a bad way to do it. Small meet, out of the media glare. Two good rabbits out in front, and run your guts out.
