I'm 19 and went on a gambling streak a few months ago. In 3 days i lost 3000 US$ , which was nearly half of all my money at the time (earned working @ menial jobs). @petr0nilo A little advice, since your used to making fast money its hard to go out and enjoy a simple job making $11 bucks/hour when you know you could be making $100 bucks/hr gambling so I would suggest doing something similar. Similar in the sense that your making fast money or easy money. I was able to stop gambling by buying and selling items on Craigslist. I find cheap cars on CL and then sell them at a profit. I dont know if i have a gambling problem.. maybe. Once i start playing online, i keep playing n playing n playing n playing.. and its never enough. there s a principle behind every addiction. I reversed all my several addictions to zero by that principle. There s one guy who wrote a book about that principle. I'm 19 and went on a gambling streak a few months ago. In 3 days i lost 3000 US$ , which was nearly half of all my money at the time (earned working @ menial jobs). At the time i felt empty, wanted to try something new and gambling seemed to fill the void....up until i lost, that;s when it only got bigger. @alexanderhleb Just stop, the problem with gambling is it is never over, when you do a job you finish the work and you get paid, but when you gamble there is never a payday, because when you win you can always win a bit more, and you always feel you can win more but you are always playing against the edge, so the game will always grind you down.
If you want to play have a budget of a couple of hundred bucks, when that's gone, then you have to wait for next month to play again.

I am the same way. I started playing poker in 04 watching the WSOP reruns right after a family member died. I was depressed but playing helped get me out of it. Everything else in life is pointless but the thrill of a poker tournament or betting money on a football game is what drives me to do everything else.

It's a very thin line between "addiction" and "entertainment"
I make about 3000$ a month, spend about 300$ on scratch tickets and casino. If I never win, that's it for this month, if I win then I would use the money for something good (not waste it all on gambling).
On April 09 I hit 1750$ in the casino, I used them to pay my property tax and gave some to our local Church. On July 09 I hit 730$ I put new tires on my car.

@petr0nilo A little advice, since your used to making fast money its hard to go out and enjoy a simple job making $11 bucks/hour when you know you could be making $100 bucks/hr gambling so I would suggest doing something similar. Similar in the sense that your making fast money or easy money. I was able to stop gambling by buying and selling items on Craigslist. I find cheap cars on CL and then sell them at a profit. It satisfies my desire to make a quick buck like gambling does. Hope this helps

@prokopton Poker isn't a regular casino game, because that's a game where you CAN shift the odds in your favor through skill - namely bluffing. Some actually consider it a healthy game to play, as it can help you bullshit people in daily life.
Standard casino games like roulette and blackjack are indeed based on chance. It is very difficult to find a "system" to shift the odds in your favor, and if the casino senses you have a working system, they can kick you out.

Any business pushing addiction should have self-banning by adding a chip into a card they carry. When it gets read, the person has to leave the location or security are called.
If governments want to allow addictive establishments to function, they must allow people to ban themselves, so the govt must pay for this electronic infrastructure. They make so much tax revenue but offer no way for users to stop themselves from going there. This oversight is due to it cutting into their tax income.

I used to play poker. The casino gave the players "free" coffee, free lunch, free dinner, and free pop. How does the casino do this and pay its poker dealers and make money?

The rake is based on a percentage of the pot where I'm--3%. In some places, it's 5%.
That's the illusion, "You're not taking Their Money, you're taking other players' money."
Do the experiment and tell me who ends up with all the money. In real life, it's even worse because new money keeps coming in from players.
How does the casino give players free beverage, free food, pay its dealers, pit bosses, rent, utilities, and still make a profit? The rake. Do the experiment.

Gambling is a drug. The same pleasure hormones and neurotransmitters are released/stimulated (dopamine, adrenaline, endorphins...) when consuming drugs and gambling.

spot on. I have friend that's is a gambler and does quite well. However he never does or thinks about anything else. He dreams it lives loves it. It has cost him everything that "normal" people hold dear. Family, his house, his health (should have put that first). There is no rationalizing with him. It's exactly like a person who has a substance abuse problem. The brain is the best pharmacy so therefore of course so is gambling. A devastating addiction.

I am an ex compulsive gambler (Horseracing,greyhounds,football,roulette,blackjack,slots,on-line poker) I would get my pay on Friday and gamble it all by Saturday. I realised I had a problem when I lost my job by stealing money. SO I DO UNDERSTAND ADDICTIVE ILLNESS!!! I realised I was being GREEDY trying to get cash for NOTHING, And stopped gambling almost 9 years ago. You are buying entertainment when you gamble NOT investing money. NOTHING for free in this World because EVERYONE would gamble!

If they are going to allow this much money to be taken from people, they could at least allow BILL PAY within these casinos. You have check cashing, money transfer, cheques,etc. Casinos are not going away but a humane thing to do for those with the fever is to have reminders in sight and the ability to make payments immediately upon winning anything. This country is supposed to be about justice so a little balance is not immposible to put in place.

I'm 18 and have made over 10 000 EURO on sportsbetting, over some weeks. I started with 200 EURO and didn't take any big risks.
However, when I began with Poker recently I've lost 3000 EURO in a short period. Lol. I've banned myself for 6 months.

there s a principle behind every addiction. I reversed all my several addictions to zero by that principle. There s one guy who wrote a book about that principle. He spoke just about tobacco but i experienced that it works on every subject! Marihuana, food addiction, benching addiction, opioids addiction, valium addiction, cigarette addiction, speed addiction. Everything to zero. That doesnt mean that i cant become addicted again, but my association to this things isnt positiv anymore(always)

This really is a problem, and those people who poke fun of this addiction are ignorant. I know this addiction. It is powerful, and difficult to stop the behavior. The casinos and other gamblers prey on these people in the most unethical ways possible. It is so wrong. I would never wish this pain on anybody.

I myself am a gambler. Never been to a casino, but I play online poker. Yes, this addiction is very powerful. I've given up on skateboarding and baseball which I was very good at b/c of this addiction. It is the first thing I do when I wake up. Go online, and buy myself into a cash game or a tournament. Thank God I'm only 20. But I'll be 21 soon. Hopefully the casino won't be a problem to me.
