  • What happens when you have a laptop? Can you just plug in a SATA to USB adapter for it to work?

  • CANNOT BOOT FROM CD ???? If anyone out there cannot boot the firmware from the CD it's because the firmware has to be burned to the CD as an image file and not as a standard data file. Google "Image burn" and download the free program and you can do it that way. That's what I had to do with Windows XP. I don't know if Windows 7 gives the option to burn it as an image file or not. Windows XP does not.

  • I actually have one of these drives and I knew nothing about this problem so this video is quite appreciated. It sounds like you missed a zero in your description. You said " 001, 002 etc" and it's actually 0001,0002 etc.

  • y don't you build a PC with a Gigabyte X79-UD3 or Asus P9X79 motherboard and 64 GB ram Core i7 CPU 2600k and as much of the best grafix you can as much as the board support that should be quit interested to see it speed and preforms.plZ

  • Beavis and butthead: HEHE "Flash your firmware" LOL

  • Thanks so much for this video! If I hadn't seen this I wouldn't have known. I had 009 and still noticed a performance boost.

For those of you installing from a USB go here for instructions.

    "storagereview *DOT* com/how_upgrade_crucial_ssd_firmware"

  • I can't get this to work. I downloaded the ISO and burned it to a CD. It sits at the Finding drives part for ever and never updates. I've swapped my SSD from 6.0 sata to 3.0 sata ports thinking it would help. I have a CT256M4SSD2 firmware 009. I don't know what I'm doing wrong or what else to do.

  • @narc0tlc If you have a USB drive just go here

    "storagereview DOT c o m/how_upgrade_crucial_ssd_firmware"

Link that I used and it worked first try. Hope it helps if you didn't figure it out already yet.

  • useful, cheers

  • i just downloaded the firmware, and it is for the 64gb ssd, just wondering if the same firmware will work with the 128 version cause i change my mind over the 64gb and don't really want to dump the cd i just made

  • @iNf3rNuSdI4bLuS1 DUDE THERE ON SAME FIRMWARE

  • Comment removed

  • Yes!!! 1080p!!!

  • My PC keeps booting on the ssd, even if I set the DVD-player to first boot priority. Can anyone help?

  • @beenndik you need to press F8 when the BIOS logo comes up and then select either Hard Drive, Optical Drive, Removable device etc. to boot up from, that's where you select your Optical Drive

  • How can i use a USB to update this. Im tired of wasting DVDs on it.

  • @DopeBoyMagic66 Write the ISO using LinuxLive USB Creator :)

  • Thanks Linus !

Wouldn't have saw this problem coming without this video .

  • do you get more money if I click on these adds?

  • OCZ is easier to update

  • @ExclusiveBrad: OCZ needs update every week, buggy SSD's.

  • @visje66 There hasn't been an update since I got my Vertex 3 around 3 months ago. I have it as my boot drive and have experienced zero bsods.

  • @visje66 OCZ just fucking sucks i doubt theyll ever make a reliable Ssd...

  • @jimmyyujyyt if that were at all true, they wouldn't have issued the fix. troll harder

  • Nice , thanks. My m4 arrives tomorrow :D

  • Nice, I had put off buying an SSD because of this bug.

  • Thanks again. This helped me out a lot.

  • Yay Old intro!

  • Made in Singapore... but prices of Crucial SSDs in Singapore are higher compared to other countries...

    Crucial trolling...

  • Cocaines a hell of a drug!

  • Watercooling part 3 nao!!!

  • You are a lifesaver. I have the 64gb m4 Crucial SSD, and I would never have known this had I not subscribed to your tech tips. Really appreciated.

  • LinusSexTips

  • I have always wanted to no.

Linus are you the owner of NCIX??

  • Product of Singapore

  • who in the world doesnt have a usb-port and stick?

  • That is what I need & maybe new HDD too lol... My HDD is from 2005 & I only use it a year only.. My DVD is not a burner :(...

  • Comment removed

  • Hearing about this, just a few days for a firmware update, when I upgrade definitely going with Crucial for a SSD.

  • What keybord is that?

  • can you make one for corsair ssd's ?

  • hey ncix, do you think you could do a video on setting up microphones through your computer? not the usb ones the ones that go through a mixer etc, and set it up so that you can record audio to your computer. Would you know how to do it? and if so could you make a video on it?

  • lucky me. I have 0007

  • For most, you won't even bump into this bug for at least a year but it's awesome that Crucial fixes it with in days. Right now I got a OCZ vertex 2, I dunno why I got this one, I should've went for a 6GB/s SSD...oh wells, next time.

  • Hell I have functional CD burners sitting in my closet. When I upgraded to a Blu-ray burner in my PC, I traded my previous DVD-RW to a friend for a footlong sub combo from Subway. Haha.

  • NOTHING is better than ROM disk for archiving purposes. they can last a thousand years in storage. a HDD WILL fail, its a mechanical device, even a SSD is an "electro mechanical" device and will also fail in time. a Disk, preserved properly will indefinitely be readable. Disks are not outdated, they are here to stay, and with good reason.

  • @RamoneTalarico An average CD lasts about 10 years. An SSD can last much longer without power.

  • @MarineAquatic In actuality, the 10 year "theory" is just as up in the air with uncertainty as the life expectancy of a quartz watch. It is currently unknown what a disk will last for. However silver media burnt in the mid 80s still works flawlessly today! Now Disk rot is no longer an issue with home burnt disks due to lacquer no longer being used. Media is in fact getting much more quality made. And storage methods also can preserve these materials even longer!

  • @RamoneTalarico Sealing disks from Light especially can preserve them from deterioration also air. While mostly impractical, its possible. BluRay disks are SUBSTANTIALLY more durable than CDR and DVD, these disks would undoubtedly have a potential the others lack.

  • @RamoneTalarico oh coincidentally, i have some old disks from the mid 90s, pure lacquer, they are brown now! they still work..HOWEVER im moving the data on them to more quality media due to the relatively new "to the market" it was back then when i first started burning. these materials that CDs are made from are claimed to reside in the earth for 1000 years, While that is a laughable number im sure, the resilience of these materials can go a decent enough duration to be a viable option for us.

  • Using UPS is always recommended.

  • what is the best ssd?

i want to get 1 but i hear that they fail alot or have bugs like this.

  • @JamieA242 the old ones did. I got a " Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)" from newegg and never had any trouble.

  • I put the ISO on a new disk, rebooted, selected boot menu ----> optical drive, and the motherboard searches the disk drive for half a sec, then boots windows from the SSD (skipping all the disk reading) . :( Any clues?

  • @soklurgunnalovit Did you burn the iso file directly on the CD ? You need to burn the "content" of the .iso so that the CD is bootable. I would recommend you to use imgburn to do that (it's free).

  • So, a Crucial m4 or a Corsair Force 3?

  • but he also mentions at the end it can be done on usb

  • I have to protest to your "assumption" that everyone has a CD or DVD burner.

I do have one, but i use them so seldom, I'm not sure how many of them are even still functional, and for my future computer(s) I have no plans of installing one, since they are, outdated, unnecessary, space/power consuming and noisy. Not to mention that CD/DVD's are a very wasteful format, in contrary to the USB or SD card, which most OS's and media supports.

  • I guess someone plonked in the wrong numbers for when it's supposed to break...

  • Yeah, I unplugged my DVD drive too. I have an old IDE drive, but I never bothered buying a SATA drive.

  • thanks linus for the tut on this would not have known about the bug otherwise

  • when will be the time that we will use a Data Chip instead of an optical disc?

  • I used to not have a optical drive.... then i took an arrow to the knee.

  • Wow Linus I'm so glad i'm subscribed to all of your channels. This could have been a disaster for me as my pc is on 12 hours a day. Without you I wouldn't have known about this update. Your a Legend.

  • @technodean without linus you would have known about the firmware update until you let your PC working 5184 hours.

  • You are great man, even tho i don't watch all of the reviews u make and i don't even have the gear that u are reviewing, your video reviews are so fun to watch :) keep up the good work.

  • i think i'm gonna buy a crucial M4 to upgrade my machine...

these ssd seem to be very reliable and less expensive than OCZs,Corsair etc...

  • @tooozzo a VERY good choice the M4 has a lot to offer its writes are not spectacular but its reads are fantastic

  • @tooozzo the m4 is the best price/performance one and best Support, definitly get it ;).

  • What about the 1%! (sarcasm... on a very high level ;)

  • Who still uses an optical drive?

  • @Bytelovin Anyone who buys physical movies, music or doesn't have the money to backup to an external HDD.

  • @Bytelovin Have one.don't use it...

  • Just a tip.

People that use a older gigabyte p35 board ( like me) and have the Crusial m4.

before flashing the drive like Linus said, disable the ahci raid controller from gigabyte (not intel) on the board to IDE, or else the ssd wont flash to the new firmware!

    Thamks Linus(:

  • it worked for me :D and its faster now!

  • It seems a little complicated. On my OCZ SSD's i used the tool(software) provided by the manufacturer to update/upgrade the firmware

  • Thanks, just what I needed :)

  • Glad you did this because I have one of these drives and I had no clue about this problem.

  • The usb way is much better i prefer that..

  • thanks Linus .everything went really smooth .new firmware 0309 hope it is faster like you say

  • I love crucial. NEVER BUY OCZ

  • U hear that OCZ....with in a few DAYS of discovering the bug.......not months

  • much better sound!

  • The only computer's i have seen that don't have a CD rom are Mac's

  • How do you get the cd? I didn't see a link to get it T_T

if I can get a link to it <3 thr crucial website dosnt seem to like to load for me T_T

    Thanks in advance!

  • Who the hell anyway have run this SSD for already over 4000-5000 houres! Even 24/7 which I highly don't recommand it's still way too much, it's like 1 full year non-stop so it must have happened to very few people. That's lame from Crucial for not doing a .exe setup on this firmware as they did it for the previous one. Mine was perfect on v1.0 then when I went on the 2nd firmware, I now have BSOD when I wake from sleep 1 time on 5.. awesome -_- This 3rd firmware better fix this too!

  • If you have an SSD, my guess is that you would have a CD Burner

  • @ryan9298b2 SSD's are popular in ultrabooks

  • @KrunchatizeMeKapn I didn't even think of that sort of application. Linus was in the desktop setting so that's why it came to mind.

  • Comment removed

  • @ryan9298b2

    Well, no

Because I don't have any use for that.

  • @ryan9298b2 what a hipster nerd using a dvd to flash your bios what is this 2010?

  • @ryan9298b2 I have an SSD, but I don't have a CD burner. USB is alot faster either way.

  • @ryan9298b2 Ever heard of Netbooks? They usually don't have any kind of disk drive.

  • Comment removed

  • @ryan9298b2 nope lol. removed dvd drives from my system

  • @ryan9298b2 Some Notebooks/Netbooks don't have disk drives(CD, DVD, BLU-RAY).

  • @ryan9298b2 You may have a small case or simply never would have used an ODD anyway.

  • @ryan9298b2 i dont have a cd burner -.-

  • @ryan9298b2 If you have an SSD, you probably don't have a useless ODD. I don't and CD's are mostly irrelevant now.

  • @MarineAquatic He was putting across the point of "At least a CD burner, let alone the likelihood of a DVD-RW drive or a BD-R/BD-RW."

  • @ryan9298b2 I have no CD burner on my X220.

  • @ryan9298b2 If you have an ultratop or a very small laptop you might not.

  • I have the 64GB version of the M4 (firmware 0009), but as I use the drive with Intel's SRT, updating seems an impossibility - the drive is never found.

Does this mean the drive needs to be a non-RAID drive before the updater will even see it?

  • @jjFarking Nevermind, got it sorted.

  • Good thing that a video has been recorded for this. I struggled a lot before I found how to do it.

  • where is the gaming laptop showdown? still recording that video or haven't done it yet? I'm curious to see how much the MSI wins by.

  • i have 2 m4 64gb dirves in raid and it doesn't find the drives. i have the asus p8z68-v pro and have them in SATA6G_1 and SATA6G_2. Help!

  • @Jackyyanggk The issue is RAID.

In your BIOS, change RAID to AHCI

Boot with the FW update CD/DVD & update the drives

Back in the BIOS, re-enable RAID for your drives

Ensure your boot priorities are still correct.

I do advise making a back-up of your info before attempting this :)

I had the same issue with a single M4, but I use it as a cache drive for Intel's SRT (which also requires RAID, rather than AHCI)

    ;)

  • ROFL Watch this on 2x Speed. lol good feature Youtube. Good.

  • @HyyRisque how?

  • I am the 1%

  • I don't have an optical drive... I'm the 1%.

  • @DanteSuper Me neither :)

  • does anyone know the name of the stand he uses to place all the components on?

  • I demand Water Cooling Part 4.

  • NCIX should stop Linus from doing real work and should just pay him to do awesome videos on this channel and linustechtips. (Unless Linus wants to do extra work.)

  • Comment removed

  • hey Linus, i have a intel sdd will i need to do any updates or anything for it? i have had it for around 40 - 50 days so can u please tell me if i need to do an update and can u provide the update link please

    -thankyou

  • @GameReviewer1337 check intels website or ummm....google it lol

  • These companies should really get with the times and just make a software package that performance tunes/trims/windows optimize/firmware update/ like the samsung ssd magician or intel ssd toolbox.

  • Don't look on your SSD, download HDTune and it will tell you which firmware you have!

  • wow

  • fuck the floods,

they make disks cost more -.-

  • >optical media

    >2012

  • @ 4:45 and... if you didn't have a flash drive too, then crucial says "Fuck you, don't update your firmware, end of story"

  • Looks like current computing is more about software than hardware... I mean, they can make shit faster by just optimizing the software. Pretty cool

  • great vid linus

  • thanks dude-asaurus just flashed my firmware, wouldn't have known there was a new update if you hadn't said :P

  • So im part of the 1% that don't use a CD drive ? :( steam ftw

  • whats with this favourite retailer business you have been adding? You're just lucky that you are my favourite retailer......

  • HOW DARE YOU DECIDE FOR ME WHAT MY FAVORITE RETAILER IS! if you guys were in Australia I'd agree :P

  • So I need to update if my M4 is a 0009?

  • Love that old school intro...

  • WATERCOOLING part 3 please linus i need it to finish my pc :)

  • Awesome this is the SSD I will be using! Thank you Linus! I would be willing to make a serious lifestyle change for you :P

  • sweet hopefully there is a chance that ocz allows there customers to update there firmware

  • I didn't realize that was causing the problem. Thanks for the tip

  • watercooling part 4? lol.....

  • Update your intro!!!

  • yer

  • I have a laptop what do I do

  • WATERCOOLING PART 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • You just made my day sir !

I own a 128GB of this drive and it had a firmware of 0009 !

Thanks to you, I have prevented it from that bug ! :D

  • wtf @ most voted .-.?

  • firmware can be checked by opening DEVICE MANAGER and double clicking the Crucial disk under DISK DRIVES. Click DETAILS tab. In PROPERTY, choose HARDWARE ID. You'll see the disk model information followed by a few underscores followed by the current firmware information .

  • so 0009 doesn't need the firmware update?

  • @qwergg thats what i want to know as well.

  • @qwergg yes it does, firmware 0309 (the latest) is the only revision that will prevent the 5200 hour issue.

  • @qwergg it probably does...

  • hi

  • Thx linus for this video, I read about it before but now I'm defenitely going to update the firmware!

  • Yes!!! The ssd is made in Singapore!! Lol

  • I Had no clue a new firmware update was released. Thanks for the heads up and the guide, I found it very useful.

  • OH NOES, FLOATING POINT CONVERSION ERRORS JUST LIKE THE PATRIOT MISSLE SYSTEM BACK IN 1991! SSD'S GUNNA KILL US ALL
