no, this is for splicing a new piece of thread to the end tail as you are sewing and should always be hidden inside the gutter of the book.

Aside from a little bump on the spine, what kind of adverse effects would result from tying the new thread in on the outside as opposed to in the gutter? Just curious

Very simple method of learning the weaver's knot. Good idea using the rope - makes it easy to see and handle. Thanks!
