I'm confused. Someone explain how the note dips when the string is bent. I know I'm not crazy, that usally raises the pitch of a note. I mean the part at around 0:52
@chicken6111 that riff contains of "two" notes.. The second note (the one being bended) is lower than the first note, so even if he bends it, it's still lower than the first note.
Let me clear this up, as I use this technique quite a bit myself :p Yes he does have a trem, it's just not locking. He picks the 7th string and bends the 6th which creates a higher tension on the string side, causing the trem to move upwards and therefore 'diving' the actual picked note.
@0DaveC I see.. but I assume it wouldn't work on all guitars.. as i'm mainly a blues guitarist, I have never heard of that little technique. So thanks for clearing this up!
@khoiavo No, as I said you'd need a trem for it, preferably a decent floating, locking one like ibanez Edges or Floyd Rose, that way it always comes back in tune - but from what I've seen the JP7's (Misha's guitar in this video) trem isn't too bad :}
@chicken6111 I think he uses a guitar with a tremolo...and he bends the E string to a certain level...so the 7th String detunes a half step. That works on also on my tremolo Guitar...
@SupernothingTK funny thing is he doesn't use one and it sounds badass, maybe cause he's got the tubescreamer and noise suppresser, mine sounds sloppy and I can bearly hear the pitch drop
@MrAndrewshepard That wasn't sarcasm, but the bending technique would work much better with a trem. He's not bending the string that he's picking, he's bending a different string. And the pitch it going down, not up.
@MrAndrewshepard That wasn't sarcasm, but the bending technique would work much better with a trem. He's not bending the string that he's picking, he's bending a different string. And the pitch it going down, not up.
@vicegrip37 simply palm muting the notes then cutting them off from vibrating out. He's essentially just putting a staccato(short) feel to the notes by not allowing them to ring out.
drums are fucking nuts!! but i dont know if this actually a song?if so misha needs to get a little more creative his writing is starting to get repeditive dont get me wrong periphery one of my fav bands
@crazyguitar753 if you dont know what song this is then you must not listen to periphery that much.... you do realize this video is over 2 years old right.....
@StylishStar88 Update; I went to Guitarcenter today and talked to one of my buddies that works there...it turns out Elliot actually DID work there but I didn't actually know that was him. Funny coincidence
While the song is definitely groovy, it could be a lot better. It's all the same 4 - 4 drum beat with a guitar riff that I learned the first time hearing it. Mansoor can do a lot better than is, but I'm not so impressed.
@PedrosBeenJamin with all due respect, the song wasn't intended to be much of a technical showcase. it's supposed to be an concise introductory piece that gets you pumped. it succeeds imo.
THANKYOU to the commenters on this vid, I had no idea I could manipulate the bridge that way. I just played that riff at 0:50 and blew my own fucking head off!!
@Prospecter He's hitting the open 7th string while bending the hell out of the 6th/5th etc. Doing so raises the floating bridge and lowers the open note. If you want a better look at it, it check out AlucardXIX's cover of it on his youtube page.
My brain just exploded! i REALLY hope that the version of New Groove on the EP will be this longer version! Seems like an old video though, so i doubt it will be :(
@BLACKanimebrother He's diving with the tremolo. what he's really doing is bending a string hard until a parallel string dives naturally. it only works with locking trems though!
@RiseofTheProphets He isn't bending the string he's playing. He's bending the next one really hard which pulls the floating bridge forward, lowering the note.
@RiseofTheProphets ! when playing a guitar with a floating bridge, bending strings other than the lowest string will cause the bridge to rise and lower the tension on the low string, which - apparently - lowers the frequency and accordingly the pitch
When it shows Misha playing at 0:53 what's he doing with that bend? It looks to me like he's doing that staccato type effect on the 4th or 5th fret or something and then going a fret lower and bending that fret so that it sounds a little lower than one semitone above. Am I correct?
@MineSweepingKent he has a floyd rose trem, which is floating. he plays an open note and he pulls another note, making the lowest(played) note drop in pitch.
@skiesxfallxdown He improvises based off of the accents. Some of the fills will stay the same or have similar feels, but he has a lot more fun improvising and changing things up and it keeps things way more fresh for us. Even the album was basically just us comping our favorite takes of each section cuz that was improvised around the accents, albeit a bit more conservatively than he likes to play live.
@Periphery haha... thats so sweet!!... i was gonna say... I've almost gotten into a few accidents listening to the record in the car saying " theres no FUCKIN WAY" lol
@Periphery Do you guys play the accent patterns by ear or are they written out? It would be really cool to see a lead sheet or a chart of some kind to see how the grooves fit together and what fundamental rhythms they're based off of.
@Periphery I'm not trying to make myself seem like Matt when I say this but that's also the way me and my band like to do things. It makes recording songs alot easier and playing them more fun! Keep rockin' it guys!
This tone is so heavy. and bulb's polyryhtyms are so precise. UGH. i love it. And Matt Halpern is hands down one of best drummers of any of the newer bands.
@meatballsub666 since its floating, it stays in tune based on the string tension vs spring tension in the back. When you bend a string a large amount, it releases tension for ALL of the strings, thus giving you that "diving" sound.
