  • Took 2 years, but finally got on an album.

  • so sick! keep it up

  • Is that Javier from AAL at 0:15?

  • @TheZombieRitual What!? It looks like him! It could be, since Misha cowrote AAL's first album.

  • Matt's drumming is OBSURD

  • ELIOOOTTT!!!!

  • I'm confused. Someone explain how the note dips when the string is bent. I know I'm not crazy, that usally raises the pitch of a note. I mean the part at around 0:52

  • @chicken6111 that riff contains of "two" notes.. The second note (the one being bended) is lower than the first note, so even if he bends it, it's still lower than the first note.

  • @khoiavo @Chicken6111

Let me clear this up, as I use this technique quite a bit myself :p Yes he does have a trem, it's just not locking. He picks the 7th string and bends the 6th which creates a higher tension on the string side, causing the trem to move upwards and therefore 'diving' the actual picked note.

  • @0DaveC okay, so he's picking only one string the whole riff, and just using the other string to dive the note right?

  • @0DaveC I see.. but I assume it wouldn't work on all guitars.. as i'm mainly a blues guitarist, I have never heard of that little technique. So thanks for clearing this up!

  • @khoiavo No, as I said you'd need a trem for it, preferably a decent floating, locking one like ibanez Edges or Floyd Rose, that way it always comes back in tune - but from what I've seen the JP7's (Misha's guitar in this video) trem isn't too bad :}

  • @chicken6111 I think he uses a guitar with a tremolo...and he bends the E string to a certain level...so the 7th String detunes a half step. That works on also on my tremolo Guitar...

  • Coolest sounding part is 1:00 Fuck Yes!

  • 0:53 praise djesus

  • this version is so much better and than the original ! Why didn't you keep that one?

  • Man, they went hard like cold nipples

    Matt's nipples

  • That's an awesome technique at :53! Hitting the bottom note and bending strings that aren't played to drop the pitch.. So cool.

  • @SupernothingTK Hell yea i could listen to that on repeat

  • @SupernothingTK

Haha, didn't know there were something good about Floyd Rose lowering the tuning while bending.

  • @SupernothingTK i tried it, didnt work

  • @MrAndrewshepard Do you have a trem?

  • @SupernothingTK no but I figured it out, I just gotta bend the strings as hard as I can

  • @MrAndrewshepard Works better with a trem, but it'll work a little without.

  • @SupernothingTK funny thing is he doesn't use one and it sounds badass, maybe cause he's got the tubescreamer and noise suppresser, mine sounds sloppy and I can bearly hear the pitch drop

  • @MrAndrewshepard He doesn't have a trem?!

  • @SupernothingTK sarcasm? i dont see one, thats why hes bending the strings down

  • @MrAndrewshepard That wasn't sarcasm, but the bending technique would work much better with a trem. He's not bending the string that he's picking, he's bending a different string. And the pitch it going down, not up.

  • How does Bulb get that PUT PUT PUT noise around :21

  • @vicegrip37 he calls it his "impossible tone" its just a whole lot of noise gating. Axe Fx help

    s too lol

  • @vicegrip37 simply palm muting the notes then cutting them off from vibrating out. He's essentially just putting a staccato(short) feel to the notes by not allowing them to ring out.

  • Best song by Periphery.. because it's instrumental. =D

  • beatiful cymbals... whats this cymbals ? zildjian Avedis ?

    Very Very Good.

  • @AndreFreitasMG hes a meinl user if i remember.

  • This is pure filth

  • this is just standard b tuning right? but i love it

  • @darksymphonybass Drop G#

  • This and the totla mad jams sound so much sicker than the final versions. I really like the "live" sound of the jam, and especially real drum sounds.

  • First time i've seen elliot with straight hair here aha

  • all can say is axe fx

  • I hope they pressed record

  • :22 Elliot Coleman?

  • 1:42...

  • drums are fucking nuts!! but i dont know if this actually a song?if so misha needs to get a little more creative his writing is starting to get repeditive dont get me wrong periphery one of my fav bands

  • @crazyguitar753 if you dont know what song this is then you must not listen to periphery that much.... you do realize this video is over 2 years old right.....

  • 0:15 javier reyes? the fuck? lol

  • 0:21 - I would like to introduce to you, TesseracT's new vocalist!

  • @StylishStar88 That's not Elliot Coleman. That guy works at Guitar Center in Rockville, MD. I know because I just saw him there.

  • @irishmarine3 That is Elliot Coleman. That distinct tattoo on his right arm proves it.

  • @StylishStar88 Impossibru.

  • @StylishStar88 Update; I went to Guitarcenter today and talked to one of my buddies that works there...it turns out Elliot actually DID work there but I didn't actually know that was him. Funny coincidence

  • Misha and Matt are invincible as a pair. \m/

  • HOLY FUCK, the last half of this is awesome, I wish it was on the EP version of this track...

  • 0:21 MY HAND IS A DOLPHIN

  • @paengkee gimp dolphin*

  • While the song is definitely groovy, it could be a lot better. It's all the same 4 - 4 drum beat with a guitar riff that I learned the first time hearing it. Mansoor can do a lot better than is, but I'm not so impressed.

  • @PedrosBeenJamin with all due respect, the song wasn't intended to be much of a technical showcase. it's supposed to be an concise introductory piece that gets you pumped. it succeeds imo.

  • @VadaHada69 agreed, amen to that bro

  • This version is longer then the one on ICARUS EP. Why couldn't they put this one on the album? This one is so awesome.

  • WHERE THE FUCK WAS THAT ON THE EP????

  • This version should have been on the Icarus EP :(

  • this is pretty sick, and taylor larson is a pretty well known producer in Maryland

  • what a beast of a man!

  • his nipples are hard

    so are mine!

  • Haha, Elliot

  • what kind of crash is that on his right? sounds freaking good

  • look at matt working his ass of on the kit, someone needs to get misha a treadmill or something haha

  • misha and matt are meant to be playing together, they have exactly the same awesome sense of rhythm!

  • I am actually in love with Taylor's drum sounds, these and the ones he gets with Travis Orbin's session work are amazing!

  • 1:05 GREAT D0UBLE BASS roll.

Man I love these kind of drummers. Energy !! P0WER !! Love it.

  • So the second half of this video is what "New Groove" could have been...

  • that erected right nipple on Matt loves the djenty

  • I like a drummer that lives his music, makes faces and enjoy his schnitz. Great song, great musicians, fun to watch.

  • 02:07

  • This should have been the EP version. Thumbs up if you agree! I think i might have posted this several times, youtube is slow and gay.

  • @travis12131415 oh there's my reply :)

  • THANKYOU to the commenters on this vid, I had no idea I could manipulate the bridge that way. I just played that riff at 0:50 and blew my own fucking head off!!

  • Javier Reyes???? Cool

  • That was sick !!!

  • blows my pants off every time

  • Hows Misha bending, and then it goes down instead of up?

  • @Prospecter He's hitting the open 7th string while bending the hell out of the 6th/5th etc. Doing so raises the floating bridge and lowers the open note. If you want a better look at it, it check out AlucardXIX's cover of it on his youtube page.

  • My brain just exploded! i REALLY hope that the version of New Groove on the EP will be this longer version! Seems like an old video though, so i doubt it will be :(

  • @Prospecter This video was posted; June 11, 2009.

  • @PLAZ1990s i know....?

  • @Prospecter I'm saying that the video isn't THAT old... :P

  • 0:55 wtf are you doing there? I cant figure it out to save my life... it doesn't even sound like that should happen. Help -_-

  • @BLACKanimebrother He's diving with the tremolo. what he's really doing is bending a string hard until a parallel string dives naturally. it only works with locking trems though!

  • THESE GUYS ROCKED TONIGHT @ BOTTOM LOUNGE CHICAGO

  • As young Misha doth spoke "kick it", little did he know the two musicians would have made the grooviest song ever to have grooved.

  • 0:50 - sexiest riff alive.

  • FAAAACEBOOK/CyRENiC

  • 00:56

  • @joedubovik DAT MANSOOR.

  • who the fuck brings tommy lee up on this video?

  • FUCKING SOLID!

  • doesnt matt look like tommy lee when he plays?

  • I fucking love this band

  • Misha, your guitar tone in this video could only be described as torrential rain.

    Where the raindrops? Are fists.

  • 4 people's ears were so blown to shit that they hit the dislike button because they couldn't hear it anymore.

  • Even though this is just a groove they're jamming, it's become one of my favourite Periphery tunes to listen to.

  • How is bulb bending his string and the tone is lowering rather than hiring?

  • Comment removed

  • @RiseofTheProphets He isn't bending the string he's playing. He's bending the next one really hard which pulls the floating bridge forward, lowering the note.

  • @RiseofTheProphets ! when playing a guitar with a floating bridge, bending strings other than the lowest string will cause the bridge to rise and lower the tension on the low string, which - apparently - lowers the frequency and accordingly the pitch

  • Is that Javier Reyes?

  • @VaasUp I think it is but i know at 0:21 it's Eliot Coleman.

  • @XENONif Yes it is.

  • Love his improv fills, Matt is a genius.

  • definitely like this new sound a lot more

  • When it shows Misha playing at 0:53 what's he doing with that bend? It looks to me like he's doing that staccato type effect on the 4th or 5th fret or something and then going a fret lower and bending that fret so that it sounds a little lower than one semitone above. Am I correct?

  • @MineSweepingKent he has a floyd rose trem, which is floating. he plays an open note and he pulls another note, making the lowest(played) note drop in pitch.

  • You guys, Animals as Leaders, and Meshuggah need to tour together! In the US! Specifically Seattle Washington!

  • I guess Periphery doesn't need three guitarists

  • @thunder that and the 3 riffs at the end...and the bit at the start... and the bits in between... FUCK theyre insane!!!

  • POCKET.

  • does anyone know what tuning hes in??

  • @JoveKOG Probably drop G# thats what they normally put their 7 strings in i believe

  • is this a song???

  • is there a system behind this groove or is it syncopation why it's so unpredictable?

  • great drummer! i mean.. wow.

what head on the kick (batter side)?

  • Is that Javier from Animals As Leaders at 0:15?

  • @Th3Congregation yes that is Javier and there is also Elliot Coleman from Sky eats airplane at 0:22 i believe

  • Is that a POD xt lying on top of the Marshall cab at 0:50? Inspite of having stuff like ENGL, Mesa and Marshall cabs? Lol!

  • @StylishStar88 its a bass pod

  • @Periphery was the recording on your soundclick done using an axefx or your previously owned equipment?

  • you dudes should jam at durvs o_O

  • Ha, Stevie Wonder on the drums everybody.

  • is that sky eats airplanes bassist Elliot at 0:20?

  • @imstrawberrywasted yep! also a good friend of misha's as well as mine! cool dude

  • stop being so awesome.

  • Someone tried to tell me that Matt Halpern was a bad drummer. I laughed.. a lot.

  • where can i get a good quality version of this jam? :D

  • @avishay224 in the related videos section you'll find Bulb - New Groove and that's the actual song from this jam

  • yo dudes!.... does Matt improvise on each take or does he really memorize all of the patterns ??

  • @skiesxfallxdown He improvises based off of the accents. Some of the fills will stay the same or have similar feels, but he has a lot more fun improvising and changing things up and it keeps things way more fresh for us. Even the album was basically just us comping our favorite takes of each section cuz that was improvised around the accents, albeit a bit more conservatively than he likes to play live.

  • @Periphery haha... thats so sweet!!... i was gonna say... I've almost gotten into a few accidents listening to the record in the car saying " theres no FUCKIN WAY" lol

  • @Periphery Do you guys play the accent patterns by ear or are they written out? It would be really cool to see a lead sheet or a chart of some kind to see how the grooves fit together and what fundamental rhythms they're based off of.

  • @Periphery I'm not trying to make myself seem like Matt when I say this but that's also the way me and my band like to do things. It makes recording songs alot easier and playing them more fun! Keep rockin' it guys!

  • @TheSaxDrummer123 Yeah I have kind of the same thing when it comes to drumming; I usually improvise fills and whatnot haha

  • @skiesxfallxdown all about practice from what ive learnt. Repetition! lol

  • What a fucking beast!!!

  • :46 is my favorite moment of music.

  • Perfect song to have lyrics on. This better be on the next Periphery album!

  • is that javier from AAL at the beginning?

  • misha's face at the end = thats right bitch! lmao!

  • you guys need to turn this into a song!!!

  • This tone is so heavy. and bulb's polyryhtyms are so precise. UGH. i love it. And Matt Halpern is hands down one of best drummers of any of the newer bands.

  • going to see you guys tonight at the mod club!! so stoked. hopefully you guys play this tune. cant wait to bask in thine excellence :D:D

  • going to see you guys tonight at the mod club!!!! so stoked. hopefully you guys jam this :):). cant wait to bask thy excellence..lmao

  • I'd love to hear this turned into something. Periphery cannot get old. Literally, the next best thing in my musical journey.

  • How the hell do you guys do it?

  • 0:54 .... hahahaha smart ass -_-

i would of never thought of doing that, im gonna try it.

  • @thelogheart Haha the good thing is that you can do it on the shittiest pieces of shitwood. I do it on my squier :D

  • The song is called New Groove and you can download it from Bulb's soundclick website :)

  • Is that a Petrucci 7 string?

  • whap whap WAAAAW whap whap whap WAAW whapwhapWAAAW. <-- grooviest riff riff ever written

  • @thudunder Respect.

  • how the fuck did you do that floating bridge thing?

  • @meatballsub666 since its floating, it stays in tune based on the string tension vs spring tension in the back. When you bend a string a large amount, it releases tension for ALL of the strings, thus giving you that "diving" sound.

  • Misha where the hell can i buy this tune from???

  • @doushimon

You can get it off soundclick, it's a little bit shorter than the video here but still great.

  • thanks for uploading this song to soundclick mr. mansoor!!

  • Periphery jams on what takes me weeks to write. Definitely my favorite band.

  • kill it my indian brother!hails.regards from india!
