Actually Bill Clinton never balanced a budget. All Bill did was keep the debt in 30 day Treasury notes that kept the debt and off the books. If your honest, look at Clinton's last budget submitted to the CBO. It gives the illusion of being balanced, but with the change of Administrations, the Bush Administration went back to GAAP and the budget deficits exploded as the notes were added back into the actual budget.

Regan was a great one. There have been better ones in American history, and in my opinion they include Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, FDR, Eisenhower, TR, and Truman. I place Regan as about equal with JFK and slightly better than Clinton. But nonetheless, to be included on that list is to be included on a list of people that, though imperfect, were noble and honorable leaders of this country. Regan always made me, then as a child, feel proud to be an American, and I still feel that way today.

Reganomics ended when Reagan left office over 20 years ago. You have had three Presidential administrations since Reagan left office, four if you count the current occupant of the White House. Each one leaves their own mark on their Administrations and on the country. Reagan did his job, and did it magnificently. Each President since pales in comparison.

I agree with you on Buchanan and Johnson. Hoover gets credit for a lot of things that weren't his fault, and others get credit for good things that he did. For instance the Hoover dam was to be named in honor of FDR when Hoover's vision brought this into fruition.

Ronald Wilson Reagan was the best president this nation has seen. He was the real deal. He also had a unique way of tempering kindness, innocence, & gentleness with unwavering firmness when the times & situations had called for it. His 8 year run as president were some of the best & most prosperous times this nation has seen. When I think of the years that Reagan was president & compare them to the current time, America seems a little lost, misguided, & weaker now. :-(

Actually Bill Clinton never balanced a budget. All Bill did was keep the debt in 30 day Treasury notes that kept the debt and off the books. If your honest, look at Clinton's last budget submitted to the CBO. It gives the illusion of being balanced, but with the change of Administrations, the Bush Administration went back to GAAP and the budget deficits exploded as the notes were added back into the actual budget.

Regan was a great one. There have been better ones in American history, and in my opinion they include Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, FDR, Eisenhower, TR, and Truman. I place Regan as about equal with JFK and slightly better than Clinton. But nonetheless, to be included on that list is to be included on a list of people that, though imperfect, were noble and honorable leaders of this country. Regan always made me, then as a child, feel proud to be an American, and I still feel that way today.

Although I disagree strongly with you about Reagan, who I think was a terrible president because of his corruption and his arming of Islamic extremists, my list of great presidents would be similar to yours. My additions would be Jackson and LBJ. Like Clinton, I think those two are often underrated.

Reganomics ended when Reagan left office over 20 years ago. You have had three Presidential administrations since Reagan left office, four if you count the current occupant of the White House. Each one leaves their own mark on their Administrations and on the country. Reagan did his job, and did it magnificently. Each President since pales in comparison.

Or when he raised payroll taxes on working people and cut taxes on the big corporations, polluters and trust fund babies who funded his political campaigns.

Yes, Regan had his problems, but so do all presidents. His achievements were quite remarkable, too.
Some of his theories about economics were wrong, but they also let a more efficient capitalist system survive past the collapse of Russian communism, though they caused the S&L crisis.
His shortcomings make it hard for me to place him higher than tenth or so, but he was far above average when you look at people like Grant, Harding, Pierce, Nixon, Carter, Bush Jr. and Sr. and so on.

I'd probably quibble with you about Grant (enforcing the 13th Amendment) and Carter (Human rights). Maybe even Nixon (EPA, China) even though he was mostly evil. I'd add Buchanan, Andrew Johnson and Hoover to the shit list. In my readings, the three about which there seems to be the most disagreement are Polk, Wilson & Reagan.

I agree with you on Buchanan and Johnson. Hoover gets credit for a lot of things that weren't his fault, and others get credit for good things that he did. For instance the Hoover dam was to be named in honor of FDR when Hoover's vision brought this into fruition.
Wilson I place top 15. Polk is down the list a way, even though I'm a Tennessean.

Okay now, I gotta call you on the Grant thing. While I acknowledge that there were many more appointees in the 1980s than in the 1860s & 1870s, there were more political appointees convicted of crimes related to their offices in Reagan's administration than in all other administrations combined, including Grant's. 267 at last count.
Most rank Wilson pretty high. Harry Truman certainly did. But I think entering WW1 was a mistake. Polk is interesting to me because he added so much territory.
