  • North Carolina lost a national treasure today. The great Benton Flippen passed away. Thanks for all the fiddle (and banjo) tunes Mr. Flippen. I was always partial to Whoa Mule

  • Mr Flippin has for many decades very ably carried on the grand tradition of outstanding old-time fiddlers to have come out of Mount Airy & the district thereabouts. He is one of what The US Marines used to call The Old Breed .. i.e. he was around & actively involved BEFORE WW2 came along. He's a fine trainer of up-&-coming fiddlers, too. So here's hopin that some bright young bowman emerges before too long, to take up the mantle ...

  • Good shootin...the lighting looks old timey. Ideal for the Mr. Flippen and band.

  • Thanks - wasn't sure how that backlighting would look but it complements the sound.

  • lovely stuff, I remember it pretty well. congrats on the win! (isnt that tune fortune?)

    -Kevin Samuels

  • Thanks -- and it is Whoa Mule. Many old time songs have similar melodies -- this is very close to Fortune.

  • thanks for sharing this... i'm the banjo player in this video... :-)

  • Happy to, Andy -- have really enjoyed your pickin' with Benton over the years.
