  • A Frenchman dislikes this.

  • I agree (below). Rule, Britannia should the national anthem. it is more stirring, it actually has a tangible connection to the British people, their character, their history, their outlook.

It was a paean to parliamentary democracy, British mercantile trading dominance, and its ability to buy and sell anywhere in the world, all protected by the Royal Navy. Britain's island geography meant that with an effective navy, it didn't need a standing army, the hallmark of continental tyranny.

  • @disamjisa (cont) These characteristics meant that Britain had all the building blocks for a modern politically-representative, free-market democracy, and it's no accident that the best countries in the world are the UK, the US (though declining), Canada, Australian and New Zealand.

Our commitment to parliamentary democracy, free-markets, common-law and the English language bind us together inextricably, and these traits should be celebrated.

  • Is there a single instrumental version of this song anywhere? Don't get me wrong, I like the singers, but I'd like to hear a powerful instrumental without the singers.

  • @TerredeFrance71 Tu es bien le seul.

  • Makes me feel patriotic..And im not even british...

  • @Hippietraveller Ditto. :D

  • Whenever I hear this song, I love to realise how hard it must stick in Gerry Adam's throat that Northern Ireland is British, and how it will be for many years to come.

Oh, and yes, I'll be happily joining the street parades to celebrate the wedding of our future king and queen.

So proud to be British, and Northern Irish :)

  • @benking18

Jesus man,is that all u headcases think about?

    Gerry Adams this,IRA that..

Do I detect a bit of Fenian envy perhaps?

In the end mate,it matters not which flag flies over us because the truth is be they British or Irish, the ruling class always have and always will screw every last one of us regardless of religion or race.

The ordinary people of this world need to wake the fuck up and realise we are all in this together.

    Its us versus them.

    Fenians arent the enemy,ignorance is.

    Peace.

  • One dislike? Lol. Who was the bitter Irish cunt who did that?

  • @djamata001 Maybe it was a sand nigger, dune coon, camel jockey, or towel head??

  • @Celticboi69 Or, maybe it was a rasict, facist cunt like yourself.

  • @djamata001 Hey gum guzzling sperm berper you spelt Fascist wrong. Go off and get down on all fours and spread them for the arab that gonna fuck your hard tight ass. He's gonna do it until your asshole is bleeding and your going to be crying to your mum. You little sissy tea drinking fairy

  • Although the part of the Netherlands I live in was liberated by US soldiers, my deepest sympathy and respect goes to the forces of the United Kingdom, who liberated more than 85% of the Netherlands.

Eternal grattitude therefore. We will remember. God save the Queen!

  • im american and love this song

  • I honor the British Empire, it's the birthplace of our nation, and governing method.

She was very much our Mother Country.

  • Beautiful version.

    Greetings from Italy

  • Hermoso, Greetings from Colombia, LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

  • Thanks a lot !

    One of my favorite version.

    A french guy :p

  • I agree this should be the national Anthem...they always play it at the the end of the Proms and always get a standing elevation and hundreds join in. Unlike the anthem we have "God save the Queen" is so boring and dull, at least with rule Britannia it celebrates Britain as awhole nation and not just one person.

  • This is the sort of anthem which inspires a man to defend to the death his country. They just don't make 'em like they used to!

  • Greetings from Canada... proud to belong to the Commonwealth

  • Rule true Freedom...Freedom rule the waves

    humans never will be slaves!

Down with Empires! up with Humanity!

  • My grandfather always says it was great to bomb your asses back in WW2...

It´s a shame.... I like Britain and that will never change!!!

    Greetz from Germany!!!

  • Why did you retreat lads? Where is your endurance? Where is your cold blooded bravery and toughness. World needs it. You became most decadent nation in dying. Europe. Pity...

  • Ohhh, didn't mean to post it that many times. :P

  • @LollieSmith

I didn't say that we ruled the waves anymore, but we're a damned fine country all the same, considering our size.

    - Biggest army in Europe.

    - Biggest defence budget in Europe.

    - 3rd largest navy in tonnage worldwide.

    - We own 14 overseas territories, and the definition of "Empire" is - "A country which owns 2 or more other countries".

    - 4th largest economic center (London).

    Etc :)

  • It's refreshing (and even surprising) to feel such an upwelling of emotion in a reference to an ordinarily reserved people. But up the emotion surges, for the world has much to be thankful for, and much has come from, the people who live on that 'precious stone set in the silver sea' (see what I mean?!?) :-) God bless and keep the United Kingdom and her people! And thanks to them for giving US a good start...

  • A stirring version indeed. Also the one by the BBC symphony orchestra is good....

  • To the person who said that the British empire no loner exists, it does, but is no longer known as the British empire, instead it is known as British overseas territories. The Queen also rules the Commonwealth of nations - 1/3 of the world.

    Rule Britannia :)

  • @JoshRatts we dont RULE the waves anymore

  • Despite being a U.S. born, I still hold the years I spent in the UK as the best of my life. Long Live Britannia!

  • Been to the UK in 2009 and fell in love with everything British - food, weather, and the culture. Hurrah! From the Philippines!

  • Greetings from USA. Greatest anthem ever. Should be your national anthem!

  • God Save the Queen!

    Long Live the British Empire!

    Greetings from CT, USA!

  • I realise that

  • greetings from germany! :) I could listen to this epic song the whole day...!

  • excellent version - Long Live the Empire!

  • @oldsouthafrica the empire was destroyed some time ago

  • @oldsouthafrica In case you haven't noticed, the empire no longer exists.

Rule, Britannia! was an exhortation, "Britannia rule the waves" not "rules the waves". It was a celebration of the fact that Britain kept no standing army, which was a hallmark of continental tyranny.

It was celebration of English liberty, parliamentary democracy, and the mercantile empire of interests that Britain held with the Royal Navy, and the freedom of trade everyone enjoyed because of its hegemony.

  • @oldsouthafrica (reply 2) Why is it that people always misconstrue the meaning of this song?

IF you want mindless, nostalgic crap, go sing God Save the Queen. If you want something with more substance, a much clearer connection to England and its history, read up about this song (and stop making such a fool of yourself by saying ridiculous things like long live the empire)
