Wow, I always kind of thought of Purple Rain as a joke, or didn't take it all that seriously. After hearing Phil play it the way he did...it was so beautiful. And then with the lead riffs sliding in between chords like hendrix...Phil you usually melt my face off, but this time I'm glad you melted my heart. Have you come across the idea that where the neck pickup is usually placed on a strat is a 'dead node'..the 24th fret. Maybe that's why the pickup sounds good away from that point?

@Gleefan39 the usual placed strat neck pickup sounds pretty killer for hendrix, SRV, jeff beck, ritchie blackmore and a kazillion other players. plus... if you listen to a humbucker in the neck position of a 24 fret guitar, it doesn't sound quite right. just something to think about when you're pondering the sweetness of this neck pickup.
