Ahh! Nice! That beginning was far from the tinkling piano. I love nice forceful, Wagner-like Holst-like music that makes its presence felt. It makes me feel inspired when I listen to it!
Wow, I have this cd on Denon. It was the first Bruckner 8th I got on cd back in the 80's. I didn't know a video existed of it. I don't even know if it's in print anymore. I still go back to it, one of the best!
The Finale is the apotheosis of Bruckner's mighty 8th (aptly named "The Apocalyptic") and creates a triad with the perfect melding of the Heroic, the Tragic and the Eternal.
Lovro von Matacic has a profound understanding of this extraordinary work. His conception is dead-on, and the NHK follow his lead, acquitting themselves quite well, with the tympanist getting special mention.
The Old Lion exited the podium on the fourth day of 1885; this may well be his final gift to Bruckner - and us.
Indeed the legendary Concertgebouw Jochum performance is apparently the best, but it is like hell to find a copy! I am still unable to locate one, any ideas?
issued in 2007 is a cd with the great Matacic conducting the czech philharmonic in bruckner 5th.....i havent heard such detail in recorded music since...i dont know....
Yes, Supraphon did reissue the CD of Matacic with the Czech Philharmonic in Bruckner's 5th Symphony. But I honesty would not recommend it. The performance overall is fine and well executed, but the spiritual qualities found in Jochum's last performance of the work with the Concertgebouw Orchestra (Tahra 247) are missing. Worse still, he made cuts in the coda of the work and sort of reorchestrated it to include a cymbal and triangle. What's wrong with keeping it as is? But do try the Jochum!!!!
He looks like a big bear up there on that podium, waving his paws around - wearing oven mitts - but he lights a fire under that orchestra and they play their hearts out for him. Marvelous.
So is this Bruckner's or Matacic's piece? It's great, btw.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This is terrible. The trumpets can't handle the upper register and the oboe sounds like it's dying.

People aren't made this way these days, maestro von Matacic is the last of his generation, the last of the Romantic era.
