I know Robin Cousins did a routine to Dean Martin's "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" but I can't find it anywhere. I remember watching it on TV as a kid, but I can't seem to find it. Anybody have any idea when he did it and if it is available on YouTube? Thanks!
Thanks for uploading. What a job to watch this again, having originally seen it at the time on television. I had forgotten what a fantastic skater Robin Cousins was. I loved his intepretation of the music as well.
you have something special there robin just because your older now doesn't mean that you can't do it anymore!!! Don't give it up carry on, you one of a kind, don't waist it!!
I was fond of Robin, too. In 1980 he won Olympic Games, but the world championship in 1980 won Jan Hoffman from West Germany. I was so dissapointed, I remember... Scott Hamilton took the third place (or even forth, I don't sure).
I hadn"t seen this in a while; it was so nice to see it again. Thank you for posting a really terrific skater and over-all nice guy: Robin Cousins. Miss seeing him skate.
If yoy enjoyed this then I also recommend Robin's exhition programme after the 1980 Olympics (Youtube Cousins Ex1980) He was still an amateur skater but no-one has ever looked as much as home and at ease on the ice. As the male American commentator said "this is sensational"!!
Can anyone settle a dispute in my house? I distinctly remember Robin doing the very first 'backflip on ice', either in his exhibition piece at the 1980 Worlds or shortly afterwards, but my elder sister (also a figure skater, as was I at the time, but she was 24 then and I was only 14) says it was Scott Hamilton, the American skater, who did one first. Help please? She's now 53 and I'm 43 and this disagreement has been going on (in a friendly way, of course *grin*) ever since!
The first backflip on ice was performed by Terry Kubicka at the 1976 Worlds. It was immediately banned from competition. If either Robin or Scott did the backflip in competition they were performing an illegal move and would have faced deductions for it. Though it was a signature move in both of their exhibition programs.
As for which performed the backflip first in *exhibition*, Robin Cousins pre-dates Scott Hamilton by a few years. It's likely Robin was first.
@medusacascade66 I just watched a videotape I made of the 1982 World Professional competition on NBC. Voice overs not too clear, but I thiink he said Robin was promising to do a backflip, and wow he did. And to my memory it was definitely before Hamilton.
I always thought it was Norbert Framm at the 72 Olympics - I remember being up in my parents' bedroom watching it on the old b&w tv but my memory ain't what it used to be....
I always thought it was Norbert Framm at the 76 Olympics - I remember being up in my parents' bedroom watching it on the old b&w tv but my memory ain't what it used to be....
the 80's and 90's was a golden time for skating, w/Robin Cousins, Scott Hamilton and Curt Browning bringing new, innovative skating to the fore. I miss those days.
A true legend and thats not a word i use to describe many people. We need him, and Torvill & Dean training our British skaters, we might win something. Shame know body in the British Winter Olympic Committee has bothered to ask
This is so clever...you know the scene with buster Keaton when he sticks two forks in the bread rolls at the dinner table...watch Cousins feet at the start...he does that!
If that isn't talent then I don't know what is, that performance was so breath taking and I don't think anyone could do it that well, not even Torvill and Dean!!
thanks for posting this. It's my favourite skating routine ever, and seeing it more than 20 years later confirms it is still tops and Robin Cousins will always be my skating god!
amazing! i have to agree with billyelement, Robin rules!!! xD i love him so much.! and Torvill and Dean!!! xx Ray was great! no doubt about it, he will win! xD
He did compete with this piece in the world professional championships back in the eighties (I forget which year, but I think it was fairly shortly after he turned pro) - and deservedly won, although I forget what his marks were. It blew me away back then - now I appreciate it even more. Thanks again for posting it.
@XDaddiesLittleGirlX I saw a different performance of this on video (many years ago - it was on a betamax tape) where it was all 10s. This was apparently one of his stock routines, and he must have done it at a competition somewhere.
He was King on ice. Pure magic and elegance. Glad to see a new generation have discovered his huge talent. Along with John Curry and Torvil and Dean this was the Golden age of Ice Skating. I miss it.
I've never seen a video of Robin Cousins skating before so when I came across this it was a very pleasant surprise. Very impressive, particularly his double axel and his back flip!
Thank you, montykitty! Just great to see this again! Given Robin's complete ease and comfort on the ice, it's sometimes hard to believe he's performing on that treacherous surface. And npe1, you're so right--no one ever has flowed over the ice with as much ease and speed as Robin. Wonderful to see these classic performances again!
This was just way too cool! Tap dancing on ice skates..that is one of the coolest things I have ever seen! And I just LOVE this song...Tommy Dorsey performed it I believe...Thankx so very much for posting!
Thank you so much for posting this! I've been looking for it. I remember watching this on TV and being completely enthralled--this is the routine that started my love for skating.
This program is so great! I remember seeing it back then, but I didn't have it on tape. I've been looking for it for a long time. Now, I can watch it whenever I like. Thank you for posting the video.
This performance was terrific. I had a video from the '80s of his skating to Stray Cat Strut but I cannot find it anywhere. If someone has that could they please share it? Thanks! And thx to montykitty too.
You know, I've never seen that program. He played in the London cast of Cats, back when it first began, however, so him skating the Stray Cat Strut is quite amusing.
Robin cousins rocks this is the first robin cousins video i came across and it rocks - thank god u posted it and im in training 4 olympics so maybe i will get to meet him 1 day 1 will post some videos of me
Yep. 1985. He's such an artist, too, a real dancer on skates. I was surprised to find no Robin Cousins vids before I posted this -- now they're starting to appear.

Same as 1BeeJenks comment!! I saw it way too many years ago and although I taped it, the tape got damaged. Now I can share this with my grandkids.

A horrible experience for a musician when thousands are clapping against the beat on 1 and 3 of the beat. That is really hell!!!
By the way this cover - version of this nice tune is also awful and not swinging
Listen better to Edgar Hayes or Tommy Dorsey's versions if someone is interested in good Swing music.

Most people can't do the moves and dance steps he does on floor, let alone ice!
Effortless and incredible!
