If they were to start remanufacturing ATC's they should NOT use modern engines, they should just take the engines that were used back in the 80's and remake them to EXACT specs. Keep the originality. If you look online the frequency of three wheeler accidents and four wheeler accidents was about the same in the 80's.

@gymu100 I wonder if somebody (if they could) slapped a Yamaha YZ-465 motor, in a 3-4 wheeler, if it would freak'n fly? I remember when I was maybe 14-15yo, an uncle had the YZ-465. "Fast" doesn't even begin to describe it. Like "Scary Fast", pop a wheelie in 3rd or 4th gear fast, etc. It would probably lose some power/sepd due to 3-4 wheeler weight issues, but still, I but it would be a monster!

IMF (in my FACT, not opinion) Honda 250R was the coolest looking 3 wheel ATC EVER made, period. Those gold rims, the combo of red with blue seat (similar to the CR series dirt bikes). I had a regular 83 Honda ATC 200. I DREAMED of a 250R. You have no idea how many pictures of it I cut out of Dirt Wheels mags. Alas it was more a childhood dream. In 2001 bought new Yama-Grizzly 650 & Kawi-Prairie 660 hoping to relive childhood fun. I had more fun on the ATC200. The world was bigger as a kid
@gjc82071 i had a atc 200,110 and a 250r back in the day, and my dad still has a beater 250 big red... by far the 200 was the most fun, the 250r while being fast and exciting was just too much bike for messing around in the woods.
as i was in no rush most of the time the 250r was hardly driven and sold off... wish i could have kept it although
@mageac Exactly. IMO for just "F'ing around", trail riding etc, the plain/regular trikes/quads were/are more fun. I had the 200, my neighbor/friend a 200X. Mine went thru more mud, snow, etc & stuff. I heard the 250R required more "maintenance" too.
@gjc82071 the 250r wasn't to bad maintenance wise, tended to foul up plugs and be a little more figity with the carb set up, at least mine did. for me oddly enough the 110 was the worst, i kept having chain and sprocket problems... i swear i put 20 chain tensoners on the thing in 3 years
the big red, being shaft drive 4 stroke, pretty much had no maintenance needed... it was even stolen once and floated around in salt water for 2-3 days... had it running like new in under an hour...
@mageac I never tuned or changed a single chain, or even a tire (used a lot of slime & plugs though) in 3yrs on my ATC200. The neighbors that had the 200X, the younger brother was REALLY into high performance, & loved dirt wheels mags & stuff. He said the "High performance" 250R chain had to be hand oiled every 30-35min of riding time. BUT, he was a jealous type, & heard my folk might buy me a 250R (better than his 200X), so maybe that was just some covert dissuasion on his part?
@gjc82071 ive never had an issue with the chain on mine, other then adjusting now and then from being stretched, i oiled it now and then, but much less then that it wasn't an oem chain, i cant remember the brand name off hand...
the 200 never had a chain issue, had to put carrier bearings in it once or twice but that's it... the 110, TONS of rear sprokets, 2 chains and at least 5 tensioners,i think it was bent
@mageac the big red was basically rebuilt after we bought it, it was in a bad accident and needed a whole new front end. needed starter bushings quite often, but it was cheap and an easier job, a new starter would have solved that, but i was cheap...
i had to use the elec start because the kick starts internal gears were broke from the accident before i bought it, never bothered fixing it
@mageac That is odd, with the 110 sprockets, especially considering it lacked the power of a 200. I wonder if, remember in the 70-80's there was an issues with some Japanese steel being "soft"? Wonder if that particular sprocket was just poorly designed or made with soft metal? I remember am early 80's childhood friend (he lived 2 fields directly behind us) had a 110. It had no "balls" @ all. I remember him getting stuck when a pencil sized branch wedged in the front forks, lol. Fun times!

not really sure why they kept breaking, but they were made of some low quality stuff, now a days i would make something else work for a sprocket. even the tensioner kept on shearing teeth somehow... its just an idler sprocket!
i believe my rear ended was tweaked somehow, at the time i didn't know the difference but it makes sense now, my dad bought it, but i had to fix it, that was the deal lol
@mageac I was 13 when I had the ATC200. My 11yo cousin got the 200M, & my parents bought for my cousin, who was only 5 or 6 @ the time, the 185S! (faster then both 200s) They figured he would "grow into it", it was better value for the $, & in short time the 125M would be too small. Damn, I remember when those ATC's cost $1500 in the early 80's! In 2001 I paid $7,800 for my Yamaha Grizzly 650 & the same for the Kawasaki Prairie 660. Seems like ATV prices rose a little faster than inflation.
@mageac oh & btw, just in case you were curious, the ATC200 & 200M were damn near equal & each went around 50-55mph, & the 185S topped out at closer to 60mph. We clocked them via racing down the street side by said with my uncle drive a car/clocking us. I miss those days. Now you need Insurance, license plates, owner permission to ride off your property, etc. Also, I live in NY, 1 of the most ATV UNfriendly states in the USA. They suck the fun outta everything & could even ruin a wet dream!

at my parents house its near an old strip mine from the 50s, its open to anyone to use, tons of trails, i can literally travel about 250 miles without having to turn back if you know where your going. theirs tons of skidoo trails that are rough in the summer, and a power line runs right to them!

PART 2. As kids we rode there all the time, & in the field behind & around our house. As years passed they clamped down & started ticketing. Police even bought ATV's. In 2002 my cousin totalled (or so I thought) my Grizzly, & almost got killed in the process (fractured skull, lacerated liver (handle bar punctured it) broken shoulder/collar bone (he was mercy flown), & his g/f had compound (bone sticking out) arm. It happened on the stone road, going only 20mph on the Grizzly. [CONTINUED]
PART 3. I initially bought 2 so I could ride with my g/f or friends. After that accident, they REALLY clamped down on riders (& ticketed my 1/2 dead cousin on his way to the helicopter, ASSHOLES!). ATV was towed to dealer & declared "totaled". Now with really nowhere to ride, & only 1 ATV, I said to hell with it. Collected the insurance money on the Grizzly sold the Kawi for $5,500. I've been out of the ATV world (but still occasionally miss it) ever since. 500 letters isn't enough! [END]

They only topple at high speed turns wheen the rear tires grip with rounded balloon type tires. if your tires are spinning theyre sliding and thats what you want . so much fun to ride

I've just done a little research into this, and on top of the defective design, the marketing was the main reason so many young people got hurt. They were advertising these things as safe for little girls because they were three wheelers.

yes 2 strokes KILL 4 strokes in speed/acceleration, but in reliability, power, and low-maintenance catagory, 4 strokes own! So best 2 strokes ever-CR500, TRX250r, and ATC250r. best 4 strokes-CRF450r, CRF450x, and TRX450r. ohh and also the banshee rules too! (that's the only yamaha i'd ever buy)

@gjc82071 ive never had an issue with the chain on mine, other then adjusting now and then from being stretched, i oiled it now and then, but much less then that it wasn't an oem chain, i cant remember the brand name off hand...
the 200 never had a chain issue, had to put carrier bearings in it once or twice but that's it... the 110, TONS of rear sprokets, 2 chains and at least 5 tensioners,i think it was bent

@mageac the big red was basically rebuilt after we bought it, it was in a bad accident and needed a whole new front end. needed starter bushings quite often, but it was cheap and an easier job, a new starter would have solved that, but i was cheap...
i had to use the elec start because the kick starts internal gears were broke from the accident before i bought it, never bothered fixing it

@mageac That is odd, with the 110 sprockets, especially considering it lacked the power of a 200. I wonder if, remember in the 70-80's there was an issues with some Japanese steel being "soft"? Wonder if that particular sprocket was just poorly designed or made with soft metal? I remember am early 80's childhood friend (he lived 2 fields directly behind us) had a 110. It had no "balls" @ all. I remember him getting stuck when a pencil sized branch wedged in the front forks, lol. Fun times!

@gjc82071 yeah it was a pretty darn slow machine, at the time i was between 8-10 so it rocked!
not really sure why they kept breaking, but they were made of some low quality stuff, now a days i would make something else work for a sprocket. even the tensioner kept on shearing teeth somehow... its just an idler sprocket!
i believe my rear ended was tweaked somehow, at the time i didn't know the difference but it makes sense now, my dad bought it, but i had to fix it, that was the deal lol

@mageac I was 13 when I had the ATC200. My 11yo cousin got the 200M, & my parents bought for my cousin, who was only 5 or 6 @ the time, the 185S! (faster then both 200s) They figured he would "grow into it", it was better value for the $, & in short time the 125M would be too small. Damn, I remember when those ATC's cost $1500 in the early 80's! In 2001 I paid $7,800 for my Yamaha Grizzly 650 & the same for the Kawasaki Prairie 660. Seems like ATV prices rose a little faster than inflation.

@mageac oh & btw, just in case you were curious, the ATC200 & 200M were damn near equal & each went around 50-55mph, & the 185S topped out at closer to 60mph. We clocked them via racing down the street side by said with my uncle drive a car/clocking us. I miss those days. Now you need Insurance, license plates, owner permission to ride off your property, etc. Also, I live in NY, 1 of the most ATV UNfriendly states in the USA. They suck the fun outta everything & could even ruin a wet dream!

@gjc82071 i didnt think it was that quick myself, but i never had it clocked, my home town is pretty lenient on atv's, where i live now is a little more strict, but not to bad overall.
at my parents house its near an old strip mine from the 50s, its open to anyone to use, tons of trails, i can literally travel about 250 miles without having to turn back if you know where your going. theirs tons of skidoo trails that are rough in the summer, and a power line runs right to them!

i may be moving back home soon, and im going to look into a renegade for myself, and the wife can run the 300, shes not great on quads so the fourtrack is a nice stable machine for her
i like the renegade, good for messing about, good fun, but still able to make it though the muddy trails to the fishing holes

PART 1: I bought mine brand new in 2001, sold'em in '02. 1/4 mile down the road, there is a stone road parallel to R&R tracks. 1/4 mile down those is "Doe's Hill". I want you to see it & I will try to get Google satellite coordinates. It is awesome for off-roading, so much so that when the 1984 Super-cross came here, they practiced back there. (Andy Stacey & Team Yamaha, Honda, etc) In the late 60's early 70's there was even a 20ft high announcers stand that somebody built. [CONTINUED]

PART 2. As kids we rode there all the time, & in the field behind & around our house. As years passed they clamped down & started ticketing. Police even bought ATV's. In 2002 my cousin totalled (or so I thought) my Grizzly, & almost got killed in the process (fractured skull, lacerated liver (handle bar punctured it) broken shoulder/collar bone (he was mercy flown), & his g/f had compound (bone sticking out) arm. PART 3. I initially bought 2 so I could ride with my g/f or friends. After that accident, they REALLY clamped down on riders (& ticketed my 1/2 dead cousin on his way to the helicopter, ASSHOLES!). ATV was towed to dealer & declared "totaled". Now with really nowhere to ride, & only 1 ATV, I said to hell with it. Collected the insurance money on the Grizzly sold the Kawi for $5,500. I've been out of the ATV world (but still occasionally miss it) ever since. 500 letters isn't enough! [END]

They only topple at high speed turns wheen the rear tires grip with rounded balloon type tires. if your tires are spinning theyre sliding and thats what you want . so much fun to ride
